Here is what my saved game list looks like:

Sweden_January_1669
Sweden_October_1419
Sweden_November_1801
Sweden_June_1525
Sweden_April_1772
Sweden_August_1629
Sweden_December_1819
Sweden_May_1501
Sweden_July_1726
Sweden_February_1726

Et cetera

It is quite hard to find the correct game, or even remember which one is newest. Some times I load the wrong game and have to try again. So it would be better as follows:

Sweden_1419_October
Sweden_1501_May
Sweden_1525_June
Sweden_1629_August
Sweden_1669_January
Sweden_1726_February
Sweden_1726_July
Sweden_1772_April
Sweden_1801_November
Sweden_1819_December

In this way we can locate a date easily. But EUIII can do better.

Sort the list of saved games by nation
Sort the list by date

Edit - months out of order

Better yet, construct the save names based on:

Country_Year_Month(1-12)_Day(1-31)

Then, files will always be sorted together, and in the correct date order...

Funny thing: that happens to be the ISO-standard of writing dates... only Sweden and North Korea employs it as far as I know... and as you noted: it has the nice effect that you can sort the dates numerically and cronologically at the same time. I like!

I didn't realize that it was an ISO standard, but I always employ it at work. It makes it so much easier to find the right document. The only difference that I'd suggest is adding a leading "0" for single digit months and dates since doing so gives you much clearer columns.

Coincidentally that is also part of the ISO standard... :)
Is is YYYY-MM-DD and nothing else (2006-01-01 for january 1:st 2006).

I realize this is priority #2342341, but a button to sort by historical date or last modified would be nice. I can't count the number of times I had to open up the game folder just to see what my last save was.
I asume that, as in HOI2, it will show you at least the gamedate is was saved at when you select it, but before you load it.
oh, it's been said before i know, but a delete button would also be most welcome.

It's just a pitty more people doesn't use that notation, as it is really the only logical way to represent dates (instead of kinda using numbers to represent words and have the numbers appear in the same order as in the language of the speaker, wich just makes everyone confused, since they are writing in English, but thinking in their native toung, so 01-04-02 can be interpreted as january 4:th 2002 or 1:st of april 2002 depending on which side of the Atlantic you happen to be on).

Well, obviosly I'm sort of por-ISO on the date issue... :)

But it would also be useful to know the real-world date it was saved on since you may restart a game from an earlier save. You could then have saves with a later gamedate but an earlier real-world date which would be very confusing. In previous games if you never delete/move saves then the last save in the list will be the latest one but if you delete any then they may be mixed up.

I might have an obsession with save file names. The attached is useful for Paradox save game handling (or at least of autosaves)...

Personally I'd like save games to display the game date that it was saved on, regardless of the actual saves name. The reason for this is that if the game crashes, half the time I do not know if the autosave or the regular save is the more recent.

Also I hate having multiple saves with the date in the title, or having to manually update it each time. Having it automaticly display the date would be a great time saver.

Not exactly critical, but definitely a handy thing to have.

Windows has a handy time tag for when each file was saved. How about using that? ;)

Do you have WinRAR or an equivalent installed? Windows can do strange things when it doesn't recognize the file extension. IZArc (http://www.izarc.org) and 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) are free programs to open .rar files (and .zip and many others).

Am I the only one using one name for all savegames ?
E.g. "sweden" is used during one campaign and new saves always override it.

but I agree that sorting savefiles by year rather than month seems like a good idea.

No, you are not. I do the same, but I do have several of them: Sweden_1, ... Sweden_3, just in case something goes wrong with the save. I use 'wonderfull Windows capability' to find the latest save.
