Golden Oldie of the Week : Oranje's Dutch AAR

Happy newyear everybody,

(this AAR can be accessed here as well: http://home.hetnet.nl/~copia-fs/
including screenshots)

Here's my first try at an AAR for the Netherlands in a GC (hacked the files just a little bit), playing at hard/agressive settings.
I start off with only one province, the province of Holland in the game, more or less resembling the historical position and situation of the Dutch province of Gelre at the time.

Further starting position: treasury 300d, 1k army, no fleet, poor tech levels throughout.
All in all a very poor start compared to the other powers. The game is played without the special missions option; some of the tasks are just too easy, and AI countries don't get any either.

As I probably won't have much of a chance to do anything about the rest of the Spanish low countries in the first couple of years, I'll try to keep track of what the AI countries do as well, and give you some flavor of the way wars are fought between the AI countries.

It'll be slow going at first, I've only played some 5 years sofar. Later on I'll probably speed it up somewhat, so please don't expect me to keep up the level of detail that is included in the text for the first few years.
Please let me know what you think.

Introduction
It's the year of the Lord 1492 and Holland/Gelre is in a very weak position. The tax income for the country is only 23 a year, and trade and production income stand at close to zero.
Duke Karel van Egmont, also known as 'Karel van Gelre', spends great lengths of time discussing the proper policies for the coming years with his advisors, one of whom has strange but remarkable ideas on how the country should be run and what priorities should be observed. The long term goal must be to conduct a limited war against emperor Charles V, who still has his policies set on including our beautiful country in his realm, and has been contesting our right to rule for a long time now. The aim in this war should be to quickly free a couple of the territories next to our own from his crushing government and force a favourable and lasting peace treaty.
However, the country's economy is in bad shape and at present can hardly afford the upkeep of any standing army at all. First all energy must be devoted to forming an alliance with other nearby countries in order to put the ideas Charles V might hold about a possible quick annexation of our beloved country on hold.
Most available funds in the Treasury should however be invested in the economy for now, and the army should only gradually be built up. As our main adversary is right next to us, we will not invest much in naval tech for now. The appealing thoughts of exploration that have also been mentioned by the new advisor will have to wait.
Karel, himself still a young man, finds himself attracted to these ideas and promotes the new advisor (yours truly) straight away to the most senior position.

Part 1, 1492-1493

1492 Jan
First we do is to send our only available diplomat to bordering Hannover in order to establish an embassy and pave the way for a future alliance. At the same time an offer is sent to arrange a royal marriage between our countries, which luckily is accepted. This is deemed necessary as alarming notes have been brought to the attention of the court that indicate Hannover would be willing to consider a long term close relationship with England. This would not be a favourable development in Karel's view, so the arrows of our diplomacy are directed to Hannover first.
Of the available 4 traders, 2 are sent to nearby Flanders and the other 2, although much more expensive, are sent to the rich COT of Venice.

Feb
The next month bad news arrives from Venice, both our traders have been kicked out of the Cot just days after they arrived, what a waste of good money and men.
It's decided to sent new traders to the Russian COT at Novgorod and to Flanders.
Startling news arrives from the east: Poland has declared war on it's old enemy Turkey. The Poles send massive forces, numbering some 130.000 men south to the western Black Sea coast, and the Turks send some 140.000 men north to halt the polish invaders.

Apr
Our ambassador has convinced the Hannoveranians that an alliance between our two countries would be in our mutual intrest; this is very good news indeed, as Hannover fields an army of some 35.000 men. That will stall Charles V for now. The alliance should be widened shortly however.

July
After some minor skirmishes with small Turkish bataljons have been fought by the Polish army laying siege to Bujak, the main Turkish army under general Sinan arrives at the scene and a big battle is fought.
80.000 Poles clash with 100.000 Turks. After just a few days the Poles retreat to Bessarabia with horrendous losses (45.000); general Sinan immediately orders his army to follow the enemy into Polish territory.

Hessen is persuaded to join our alliance, despite their differences with Hannover. Obviously our diplomatic efforts are proving to be very efficient.
Meanwhile Spain has forged an alliance with England, Milan, Naples and Lorraine/Lotharingen, while France has allied with Savoy and the Pope, and Tuscany has bonded with Parma, Genua and the Knights of St John.
The last mentioned alliance is differing from the others in the sense that it will only expire in 1699, as opposed to all others, which have a duration of ten years only. Remarkable indeed.

Elsewhere Granada is still fighting bravely against Spain in a minor war that was already going on at the start of Karel's reign. The Granada army is really putting up a fight: they've already conquered the rich province of Andalusia and are heading for their next target, but at the same time Spain is besieging their capital province, so Granada cannot raise any extra troops and can be fully expected to loose the war.

Aug
The remaining 44k Polish army is quickly caught by gen. Sinan's troops after their retreat north to Bessarabia.
They suffer staggering defeat and are butchered to the last man, the Turks still have 66k men left after the battle and immediately start besieging Bessarabia.

Sep
Sinan decides to storm the city under siege and captures the province in just a few days. He then proceeds North to Krementjug with his remaining 58k army.

Oct
Cologne is the next member for our alliance after a Royal marriage has been concluded a few months earlier; this policy is really getting us somewhere.

General Sinan meanwhile is laying siege to Krementjug, while the Poles desperately try to raise extra troops in the province. Krementjug is stormed and taken early November by the Turks however, which annihilates the effort of the Poles to raise troops. The lesson to be taken from this is that you should avoid raising an army in a province that might come under siege before the new armie is extracted and ready to fight (morale for new armies starts at 'demoralized').

Nov
Sinan still has 46k men left after the succesful siege of Krementjug and another 15k reinforcements are on their way. The Poles have no army left to fight with and seem to be subject to the mercy of the Turks.
Sinan mercilessly marches his men into the rich province of Ukraine, as the smaller 15k Turkish army heads for Podolia. This army is soon found to be incapable of storming the Podolia province by itself and Sinan with his army turns West and leaves Ukraine be for now. He apparently aims to help out the smaller army besieging Podolia.

Dec
Winter strikes in eastern Europe; both Ukraine and Podolia are snow covered. This will greatly hamper the Turkish supply lines and heavy attrition can be expected for the Turks in Poland.

Granada meanwhile is still holding out against the Spaniards; the war lasts a lot longer than expected but the outcome still seems inevitable.

1493 Jan
Our ambassador had an excellent meeting at the drew Brandenburg into our alliance.
Also, the Dutch army recruitment pool has now risen to 20.000, the present maximum. We could theoretically raise those troops now, and another 10.000 in the course of the next year, but that would put quite a burden on the budget. On my advice, Karel decides to raise only a few thousand troops now, just enough to not let the growth in the recruitment pool go to waste.
Recruitment costs in the Netherlands are very high though, 1k Infantry costing 10 Ducats, 1k Cavalry is priced at 36D and 10 artillery pieces cost a staggering 48D.
The total treasury at start was 300D and is close to 200D now; in fact we're just another poor country at a large disadvantage compared to the big guys. At this point, even the small partners in our alliance boost combined forces of about 90k men. This is one of the reasons I've advised Karel not to mess with Spain anytime soon; we cannot hope to win such a war on our own, and we risk not gaining enough enemy provinces for the Netherlands if we call on our allies to join the effort to drive Spain out of the Spanish low countries. The big and real risk would be that the allies would take a lot more territory than we could hope to take ourselves, most probably we would end up not winning enough provinces to secure a favourable peace treaty.

Poland applies its yearly income immediately and starts mustering fresh troops in five different provinces, but the Turks still seem to be in the winning mood. Sinan reaches Podolia but with only 33k men, to reinforce the 11k already there. This siege won't last very long now.
Indeed Podolia falls already on the 8th, Sinan has some 44k men left. Turkish reserves are dwindling too at this point and apparently there is not much in the treasury to build more troops, or the recruitment pool is empty.
It seems Turkey would be sensible to try and make piece with the Poles shortly.
Sinan marches on the province of Galicia however; apparently the Turks have set their mind on gaining more than just one province from this war.

Feb
35k Turks under Sinan reach Galicia and almost immediately start to storm the place. The city is taken by Feb 15. Sinan then marches on Krakow with just 27k men.

Spain has meanwhile conquered Granada's only province of Sierra Nevada, a total collapse of Granada seems imminent. The Spanish 23k army marches on Andalusia, in an obvious attempt to free that province from Granada rule.

Mar
A newly recruited Polish 8k army marches toward Bessarabia first , while a small 6k turkish detachment sets course for unfortified Pripet, one of the provinces where the Poles try to raise a new army. As soon as the Poles notice, they turn west to Pripet, hoping to beat the Turks in being there first (unlikely). This will be a race against the calender for both Poland and Turkey!
Near the end of the month Sinan reaches Krakow with his 27k army still intact and immediately lays siege to the city.

Apr
Hanse declines to be our ally, a decision they'll most certainly severely regret some day.

Pripet falls, Krakow is still under siege. The Polish army, meanwhile strenghtened by another new detachment to 13k is still no match for Sinan, but tries to get to from Chernigov to Podolia now, thus closing the supply line for the Turks. More Polish forces, totalling 9k are marching south, while the Turks have 3k in Bessarabia and 5k in Bujak, trying to link up (but to no avail, as they need to make a time consuming river crossing).
The Polish 13k army gets to Podolia and lays siege to the province capital. Soon the 3k Turkish detachment gets there too and is solidly beaten by the Poles, no survivors, whereas the Poles suffer no casualties at all. The 6k Turkish army in Pripet is marching south but gets to Podolia too late to make a difference.
The 9k Polish reinforcements are on their way, while the 6k turkish army in Pripet is still trying to reach Podolia. Undoubtedly they'll get theirs too upon arrival. Why the Turks don't sue for peace yet is everybody's guess. They hold 5 Polish provinces, so they should be able to conclude a favourable deal.
The Poles then suddenly give up the siege in Podolia and march on Galicia to confront Sinan. Seems like a foolish decision of the Polish AI. Probably they'll be intercepted by the 6k Turkish army marching south from Pripet though. The resulting battle should become the next Polish victory in the war.
Meanwhile more Polish reinforcements are marching in from Chernigov, while the Turks are marching north from Bessarabia. On the 26th the Poles completely destroy the 6k army coming in from Pripet while only loosing some 400 men themselves. The remaining Polish 12k army again lays siege to Podolia.
Then the same events repeat. The Poles decide to march on Galicia and Krakow, but will probably be checked by the Turks marching in from Bessarabia with just 5k, before they manage to leave the province.

May
Wrong estimate made, the 12k Poles reach Galicia and lay siege. The 9k reinforcement is still trying to get to Podolia from Chernigov, but it's taking them a long time, because of the river Dnepr in between the two provinces. Meanwhile the 4k Turks coming from the south reach Podolia and marches west to Galicia.
They're caught off guard by the 9k Poles coming in from the North though and are completely destroyed at the hands of the Poles, who loose just 900 men. The Poles then march into Galicia to reinforce the 12k army already there. The Poles have some 20k in Galicia now, another 6k bataljon is underway from Podlasia and more are being recruited.

Elsewhere in Europe, Denmark and Russia have found each other in their obvious alliance, whereas France has lured Sweden into theirs. Also, Spain has invited the Scots to join their alliance (imagine England and Scotland in one alliance, I bet that one won't last very long).
Victory Point wise, the Dutch are doing pretty good sofar. We fully expect our position to suffer a lot though before we find the right path to the top ranking. We're in 3rd place now, behind the Pirats? and inevitable Spain, whereas France and Turkey share 4th place.

Jun
Another 6k Polish bataljon reaches Galicia, making the total force present almost 27k now, about the same size as Sinan's army in Krakow.

Jul/Sep
A royal marriage is concluded with Kurpfalz; good news, hope to include them in our alliance soon.
Amazingly, Granada is still holding out against Spain. Spain has failed to regain Andalusia, and Granada has meanwhile miraculously captured two more Spanish provinces, Toledo and Extramaduras. If they would only be able to recapture their capital ........ (must be a Dutch twitch, love to see Spain having a difficult time :) )

Oct
The foolish Sachsen ruling family refuses to engage in a Royal Marriage. Our most beautiful niece and mistress had already been talked into it but the Sachsen heir to the throne simply refused bluntly. Maybe there are some rumors about our little private pleasures spreading despite my clear intentions of keeping things within the mighty walls of the Dutch castle?

The Polish army in Galicia has been brought to about 30k, and the city seems to be set to fall pretty soon, while the Turks have discovered that they'd better reinforce Sinan's army somewhat if they want to achieve anything in the siege of Krakow before winter hits again. The Turks march about 5k reinforcement around the Polish position in Galicia to bring Sinan's total army to 32k.

Nov/Dec
Galicia falls to Poland, while Sinan is still having trouble to subdue Krakow. Turkey now clearly gets the message and sues for piece with Poland, stil claiming Bessarabia and Pripet, as well as a small financial indemnification. Why Turkey asked for Pripet (locked in by Polish territory on all sides) instead of Podolia, must be some secret at the Turkish court.

Spain has finally succeeded in destroying the small 11k Granada army that caused them so much trouble and is in the proces of regaining the provinces temperarily lost to Granada rule. Extramaduras is the first to fall; it won't take long now, as a 40k Spanish army is active in the area.

greetings, and best wishes for you all,
Oranje

Nice Oranje; good detail. Interesting to follow the ebb and flow of battle.

How many provinces did you start with?
How did you get in 3rd in victory points?

Very good diplomacy - three allies - Cologne, Hannover, Hessen.
However, missed opportunity for a fourth ally. Rumors of ‘little private pleasures’ may have ruined chances at a royal marriage with Sachsen? As a Dutch leader, one has to think of the nation first and personal pleasures second! :)

Seems a real challenge to raise armies, build up an economy and a treasury, while biding your time and hoping that you don’t get too far behind before you can become powerful enough. It’ll be interesting to see if the Dutch can ‘make it’ among all the big boys.

Started off with just one province, the one called Holland in the game, see the introduction to the AAR.

My VP's almost exclusively find their origin in the diplomatic successes. RM's bring points and so do alliances. I think I only scored 3 VP's for Economic achievements sofar, and no points at all for military or exploration activities offcourse.

Purely in the intrest of the country my dear KRonn, my Lord Duke Karel van Gelre needs to cater for his bodily needs occasionally, in order to keep a clear undistracted mind when making important decisions :)

It is, but watch me (sorry, Karel :) ), a little thievery here and there, the Spanish/French rivalry, and the unrivaled Dutch trading talents will bring a flourishing economy and ample opportunities to take back what is rightful Dutch property from those Pope heel-licking guys in the Escorial (sorry, that is still about fifty odd years in the future, but Karel's advisor has this nasty habit of looking in his Chrystal Ball occasionally. :D

Great AAR Oranje, no offense, but for historical reasons, as an exiled Irishman, I have to hope that your nation is crushed by Spain, or another member of the One True Faith as soon as possible, thus preventing William of Orange from taking the throne of England, and dragging so many Protestant heretics to battle in Ireland ;)

But wait, what that will do to New York may be disatrous, will Spain found Nueva Cadiz on the site of New Amsterdam, and will England be able to annex it later, or gasp, will us English speakers have to be billingual.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure what would become of Staten (was it Staaten originaly ??) Island and the other Dutch placenames here, so hang on in there against us Papists if only to preserve the quaintest river name in North America: The Kill Van Kull.

Now, to business; when the Spanish Netherlands rebel will they come under your control, or will you have to fight a bloody civil war to claim those provinces?

Back to speculation; if you don't get William to England, and thus sadly to lift the siege of Derry what do we call the Orangemen today? Dark-Bluemen for the Scottish flag? No offense to the Scots but I think that Orange looks better on our present-day tricolor than dark blue would have :))

Nope, unfortunately there will be no Dutch Revolt in my game, after which provinces would present themselves as easy gains for the Netherlands.
As soon as the Netherlands exist, the DR event is disabled by the game.
I'll have to wrestle all those provinces from the hands of the Spaniards I'm afraid.

Oranje's Dutch AAR, Part2, 1494-1496

1494 Jan/Jul
The small but thriving Dutch economy is doing fine meanwhile; monthly income has almost doubled in the past two years from 2.3 to 4.5D, thanks largely to our traders' efforts in Flanders (5) and far away places like Novgorod (5) and Venice (1).
Almost all the money is being invested in tech development however, so not much reaches the treasury. Right now we're investing heavily in a wonderful tradetech that will allow us to establish monopolies. Just a few more years, and we'll start earning some real money.
Unfortunately the yearly income is lagging somewhat, only up a few Ducats to 25.
The Dutch army is still patheticly small, it's been gradually built up to 8k Infantry until now, and the decision is made to spend another massive 56D on just 2k infantry and 1k cavalry, bringing the treasury down to just 98D.
Kleve has been found appreciative to our recent offer for a RM, but Karel decides to send another family member this time and keep his mistress around for a while longer, as he felt some remorse after deciding to marry her off to Brandenburg last year.
Turkey ofcourse got quite a few VP's for it's victory over Poland, so the Dutch are in 4th place now.

Venice has succeeded in bastling an intresting alliance with the Mameluks, Hungary and the Hanse. Should help them against possible Turkish and Austrian agression. We bet the Austrians are feeling 'ugly and left-over' in the EU alliance grid by now, but well, maybe they'll be able to find some useful allies for themselves as yet.
France has found 2 more allies in Navarra and Switzerland.

Granada is finally annexed by Spain in early January.
Kleve joins our alliance in April, following the beautiful wedding in January.
In July however Kurpfalz refuses to join the alliance, maybe we've reached our limits for now in this respect.

Aug/Nov
France declares war on England, followed by all their allies. England however seeks and finds support only with Milano and Naples, so Spain, Scotland and Lorraine/Lotharingen fall out of the alliance.
The only lucky aspect for England at this time seems to be that Scotland wasn't part of the french alliance.
They're in for an uphill battle is the most common opinion, as the English are clearly lacking good military and naval leaders and only have a modest standing army. They should be a match for the the French fleet though, that could buy them some time.
French headquarters quickly come to the conclusion that their actual alliance offers them a free overland access to the territory of England's two remaining allies on the continent.
Milan resists the first two incursions by enemy troops (from Savoy and Switzerland respectively) splendidly, but as soon as a 25k french army arrives under general La Palice the Milano army is quickly destroyed. The french however appear to have trouble storming the Milan fortress. Another large french 28k army under general Foix is sent to assist, and as soon as he arrives to the scene the fortress is quickly dealt with.
November 8, 1494 is the last day of existence for Milan, they're guided into full membership of the French kingdom.
A long shot by our ambassador in Lorraine to try to get them to join the Dutch alliance (they might feel somewhat lonely now), is met with plain refusal.

Dec
After Milan's demisethere seem to be hard times ahead for Naples, now generals Foix and La Palice both receive orders to march from Milan south, through Papal States territory to Naples.
Meanwhile, as France main armies seem to be occupied with the Italian Expedition, there is little pressure on Calais for the time being. One minor french army of 7k is sent to Calais, but doesn't do a lot of damage to the fortress.
The British and French fleets fight a few undecided skirmishes in the Channel, but England, being low on manpower seems not much of a threat to France right now.
Then, while the 22k army under La Palice strives on further south, Foix gets new orders and turns around to march north. France's allies Navarra and Switzerland have already sent modest armies north to take on Calais.
La Palice reaches Emilia, but then lets his men rest instead of marching straight on to Naples.

1495 Jan
We conclude another royal marriage with Scotland.
The Dutch standing army is at 15.000 men now, 14/1/0.
The Dutch are still biding their time, waiting for a good opportunity to strike ate Spain, but don't worry, we'll get to it. Monthly income is up to 5.3 now; but the treasury is rather low at 52D. Inflation stil at zero.

Naples has sent a modest 8k force North to Romagna and they layed siege to the city. Sofar they seem pretty succesful, but suddenly they abandon the siege and march further north to challenge La Palice and his army in Emilia (not smart).

Feb
Sweden, trying to do it's bit as a member of France's alliance, is the first to confront the English on their island and has landed a 10k force in the English capital province Anglia and start a siege of the city.

Calais is already under siege from a modest french army, while a large 59k French/Swiss/Navarra force under Foix is closing in. This won't take long; England is not going to win this war.....

Mar/May
Calais has fallen under the French boot. Foix is once again ordered to march all the way south to Italy.
The Swedish 10k army has meanwhile found an easier target than Anglia; they march on the unfortified province of Lincoln and take it without resistance.
La Palice's 22k army butchers the small 8k Naples force in Emilia as expected.

The only English 15k army in all of the British Isles meanwhile suffers a staggering defeat against the 7k braves from Sweden. Although not loosing many casualties, the English retreat without putting up much of a fight.

Jun/Oct
Austria declares war on Bohemia (another likely one).
Bohemia fields one 9k army only whereas Austria has 33k men available at the start of the war, which seems insufficient if the aim is to force a quick annexation.

Nov/Dec
Gen Foix has completed his long march south and starts besieging Naples, while the French supreme command has succeeded in finding a hole in the English naval defence and another French 11k army has been put across the channel to start a siege of the city of Dover in Kent province.
England still isn't raising additional armies (my guess is their fleet is much to expensive for them). They've boarded their only army on their main fleet of 20 ships, and succeed in driving the French from the channel, sabotaging the possibility of French reinforcements being set across.
Foix deals with the Naples fortifications in just one week, while a smaller 14k Swiss army has already started to besiege the southern province of Apulia, the only remaining territory of the Naples kingdom. Gen Foix quickly directs his troops further south, Naples days as an independant kingdom are numbered.....
England lands it's main army in Calais for what seems to be a mission impossible.

1496 Jan
Halfway the month Apulia has been taken by Foix and the French immediately annex Naples.
The English have realized the hopelesness of their attempt to regain Calais and their army has boarded the fleet again. Also, they've finally started conscripting a new army, but the English cause is still in dire straits.
The French manage to put some more men across the channel who come to assist the siege army in Kent.

After all their allies have been defeated and annexed by France England scrambles to found a new alliance, and finds Portugal and the German Knights (Deutscher Orden) willing to join.

The Austrians meanwhile have succesfully besieged the Bohemian Moravia province, but they've already lost about half their army. This will certainly not be an easy victory for the Habsburg lands.

Feb/Mar
The French have conquered Kent.
The English army has been put ashore in Sussex again, where it suffers it's second defeat at the hands of the small 7k Swedish army, that had just laid siege to the province capital. Only this time the Swedes do suffer some serious losses in the battle, both armies loose about 3.000 men and the English retreat to Bristol.
Meanwhile the french Italian Expedition is marching north again. England would be well advised to quickly conclude a peacetreaty now, or they'll face overwhelming defeat.

Apr/Jul
A new 16k English army marches south from the Midlands, while the remaining 11k veteran English army tries to recapture Kent from the French, who had marched their 19k army to Sussex to assist the Swedes, but then change their mind and quickly march east again to intercept the new English army coming from the north.
The English finally seem to have their act together; their army solidly beats the French, hardly suffering any casualties (surprise). Now if only the English fleets could prevent any additional enemy armies from making the Channel crossing .....
Alas, the fleeing French army makes it to Anglia, where it gets company from strong Swedish reinforcements, and the English capital is once again under siege.

In May, Russia declares war on Kazan; its ally Denmark follows suit (this seems very benificiary for Sweden).
Not much news from this war will reach our court, as Kazan is very far and our cartographer has not even been able to include the country in our maps yet.

Aug/Oct
The second English army boards a fleet, instead of staying ashore to bolster much needed defences. This seems a rather poor AI decision.

Another French 4k force lands in unfortified Cornwall; the French now hold three English provinces (Calais, Kent and Cornwall), although Kent is still under British siege.
The French proceed to assist the remaining small 4k Swedish force in Sussex and the siege there is given some new impetus.

Nov
English forces recapture Kent; the French 4k army in Sussex immediately responds and marches on Kent, but to no avail; they are butchered.

General Foix's army has finally covered the long distance from south Italy all the way north to Caux, apparently waiting for transportation across the channel. And yes, the main French fleet under admiral Bidoux seems to be making its way from the Mediterranean (why was this fleet there?, probably to prevent any English interference with the capture of Naples) to the Channel.

Dec
The second English 16k army lands in Anglia and surprises the siege force. The English immediately take up the battle, and, although they suffer 9k casualties, they succeed in driving the 30k strong French/Swedish siege force out of the capital province. (maybe not such a bad decision to come in from the sea after all)

England then manages to close a separate peace with the Swiss, who at that poit have a 21k army still down south in Apulia (why?) which is now without hope of ever returning to Switzerland (when at piece, armies cannot cross allied territory). The Swiss quickly disband their Italian army.

At this point the English suffer another setback. A small Papal army has landed in Ireland and is wrecking havoc in the mostly unfortified provinces. Leinster was the first to fall, the English are frantically raising an army in Munster, but if the Papal forces get there in time....., bye,bye Ireland.

greetings, Oranje

Oranje's Dutch AAR, part 3 1497-1499

1497 Jan-Feb
Venice has managed to include Irak and Persia in its alliance.
Turkey has bonded with Algier, whereas Spain has made a succesful effort to re-ignite its alliance with Lorraine and Scotland, remember all three countries fell out of the former alliance with England when the French-English war broke out. Another new alliance has been agreed between Crimea and Cyrenaica.

Although the English navy still slightly outnumbers the French fleet, they are way behind in army numbers. The French have built up a massive army of some 80k total. This doesn't bode well for the British interests it seems.
Austria is still having a hard time in Bohemia. The bohemians have already recaptured Moravia, and are trying to conquer Austria's most Northern province of Ostmarck, their army has meanwhile been strengthened to 25k. After a few weeks they split their forces and start besieging Presburg as well., while the remaining 11k Austrian forces are laying siege to Sudeten province. A new Austrian 12k army marches through Bavaria to reinforce their troops in Bohemia, thus avoiding the confrontation with the Bohemians laying siege to their two northern provinces. Austria can only march their uninvited troops through their nabour's territory because its ruler Maximilian has been elected Emperor of the HRE.

In several more battles and skirmishes in England the English manage to beat the French and Swedish forces a few times in a row. Having combined their 2 armies, they march on the 12k Swedes in Lincoln, who managed to recombine their forces as well. The remaining 13k French army is laying siege to Kent once again.

The papal army in Ireland beats several small English armies that have been recruited in the poor Irish backyard and has managed to claim another unfortified province. If they don't conclude a separate peace with the English though, their successes will all be in vain in the end. (maybe this is something that should be tweaked a little in the AI, minor countries in an alliance donot seem inclined very much to close a separate piece in a war if they are succesful)

The English loose 6k against the Swedes in Lincoln and flee north. The Swedes loose only 1k. Then, at last, an English 17k army under general Norfolk arrives in Anglia and marches on the Swedes in Norfolk. (where did this army come from? don't know)

Meanwhile, Spain has started to expand the fortifications in most of their provinces in the low countries. This is a setback for our plan, which involved waiting a few more years before striking against the Spanish oppressors.
A decision has to be made, either we start a war now that the fortifications can stil be captured rather quickly (takes some months to improve forts) but rather ill-prepared in terms of available Dutch forces, or wait some more until we can afford to build some artillery pieces to aid in the necessary sieges.
Karel van Gelre gets several conflicting suggestions but after a sleepless night he decides the time to move is now!
The Dutch army is split in two equal parts: 7.500 men under Karel van Gelre himself and another army of equal size under Maarten van Rossem. Both men, although still young, luckily have had an excellent military training on both combat and siege operations.

War is declared on Spain Jan7, 1497. Both the Scots and Lorraine honor their obligations to Spain and declare war on us. Luckily, our allies donot let us down and declare war on the enemy as well.
We'll depend heavily on our allies performance this time. The Scots donot seem much of a threat, we don't believe they'll send their Highland army across the North Sea, but we could be wrong ofcourse. On the other hand the Lorraine army already marches north toward the adjoining Spanish provinces. Strong Spanish reinforcements could also be sent oversea ofcourse but we trust that they underestimate the threat at first, so it will take them (too much) time to reinforce. Luckily the Spaniards have only a small 7k force present in the low countries, near the southern border with France. They march east, probably to link up with the 25k from Lorraine.
Our main targets that we'll try to wrestle from Spain are Zeeland and Flanders, the latter being the best prize ofcourse with its 100.000 + inhabitants and the wealthy COT.
However, Flanders will have to wait a bit.

Karel van Gelre directs his army to The Hague, while Maarten van Rossem marches on Zeeland.
A reinforcement army of 5k infantry is being recruted in Holland, which brings the Treasury down to just 5D.
War taxes are being imposed, but if we can avoid taking a loan we will do so, because the intrest burden alone might take almost our yearly income all by itself.
The Spaniards must have spent a large sum on all the fortification improvements, so it is hoped they will not be able to raise large reinforment armies in the low countries for a while.

Meanwhile the 35k Hannover army is directed to Friesland upon arrival lays siege there, and 10k Cologne forces take on the first 9k Lorraine army in Luxemburg, but they loose the battle and retreat.

Jan 29 Karel reaches the Hague and starts the siege of the city. A quick storm is out of the question though until a larger force is available; we hope the castle falls before the stronger fortifications are ready.
Feb 6 van Rossem gets to Zeeland after crossing the Rhine river, and lays siege to the city of Vlissingen (Flushing). For much the same reasons he cannot conduct a storm operation either. Spain has already started to conscript a new army in Zeeland upon van Rossem's arrival, but he's expected to deal with these forces on his own if necessary.

Mar-May
The 5 k Dutch reinforcement is ready and is sent immediately to Zeeland to assist van Rossem, where they arrive on Apr 16, just in time before the Spanish new recruits arrive.
May 1 van Rossem battles the new 11k (3/8/0) Spanish army, and although the Spanish cavalry outnumbers ours heavily, he beats them soundly and the Spaniards flee eastward.
On May 6 a large Hessen army of 41k comes to aid in the siege of Holland, while 15k Kleve/Brandenburg troops are sieging Luxemburg after beating back 2 successive armies from Lorraine.

The original Spanish 7k army has made its way to Cologne and lays siege to the city with the beautiful cathedral. Somewhat later they are joined by the remains of the army that suffered defeat at the hands of van Rossem.

Jun-Oct
In june the forttress of Vlissingen starts to crack up and we decide to try and storm the fortress, which proves to be a serious mistake! The allied troops resist the supreme command of van Rossem and things turn rather ugly. Some 15k troops loose their lives and it takes ages to get moral back up. Luckily van Rossem quickly discovered his mistake and held his dutchmen largely out of the line of fire from the fort; we lost only a couple of hundred men.

Near the end of August a second attempt to storm is made and fails again :( . Luckily another 10k Brandenburg troops arrive to assist. On october 22, Zeeland finally falls to our forces. van Rossem is immediately ordered southward to Flanders with his remaining 10.3k Infantry and 300 Cavalerists.
Karel van Gelre in The Hague also seems to be making some progress with the siege, but it'll be a close call whether the siege will be succesful before the fortification improvement is ready

Meanwhile in September Austria lost its war against Bohemia. The peace treaty stipulates the surrender of Presburg province to the Bohemians. That serves the Habsburgs well for their agression :) . Bets are made that Emperor Maximilian will soon find a few generals and advisors to put the blame on for this miserable outcome of the war and have them punished appropriately.

Nov-Dec
Despite several attempts to storm the place the Hannover army in Friesland is making hardly any progess in conquering the place.
We conclude another RM, this time with the victorious Bohemians ofcourse. Unfortunately other diplomatic efforts during the year have stayed unsuccesful, maybe linked to the war situation.

Karel van Gelre is still wrestling with The Hague's city defences; the fortress improvements have been finished just in time and his force is no longer big enough to lay an effective siege. He decides to stay at the spot, as the defences of the province are not strong anymore, and the siege may still end quickly after reinforcements arrive.

November 15 van Rossem reaches Flanders and begins to siege the city of Antwerp. the 30k Hessen army is following van Rossem's lead, but it takes them a little longer to cross the river Schelde.
November29 the Hessen army finally arrives, and start an unsollicited storm of the fortress immediately. We have our doubts........ When the smoke clears we count 6k dead, of which about 1.000 brave Dutchmen. The city defences still hold ofcourse.
van Rossem now finally gets the Hessen army under full control and a serious siege of the fortress is organized.

1498 Jan-May

We take a gamble on the outcome of the war, and instead of raising 2k additional troops we use the yealy income to send out another 3 merchants to make good use of our ability to establish monopolies, which tech has been succesfully researched meanwhile.

Mar 12 Flanders finally falls to our troops and van Rossem immediately orders his army north again, to assist Karel in capturing The Hague. There are some doubts however, as Spain is raising another army in Hainaut.
We might have sent van Rossem to intercept these new spanish forces first but we decide against it.
Maybe the allies will do something about the Spaniards before Cologne falls, we'll see.
If we would try to sue for peace now we would be lucky to get away with just one province, so that's not an option now.

Hessen's main army has marched to Artois, and in May they've stormed and conquered the place (which still has only minor fortifications). This has gone a lot quicker than expected.

Jun-Dec
They next move on Luxemburg, which seems to await the same fate.
The Dutch supreme command does some quick thinking now and van Rossem is ordered to march to Luxemburg as well with just 1.000 men, to make sure the Dutch flag will be in top when the city falls :) .
The rest of his army stays in the Hague, where the siege appears to be going better now, but victory seems still some months away.

We keep an eye on developments in Cologne, where the Spaniards unsuccesfully try to storm the fortress (nov) , and they loose many men. That's good news, because Cologne will now probably hold out a bit longer.
Unfortunately Luxemburg falls (oct) to Brandenburg forces, before van Rossem can get there (he can't enter Hainaut, as it is still in Spanish hands and his small army isn't big enough, so he has to travel the extra distance through Flanders and Artois).

The allied army then heads for Hainaut and van Rossem with his small bataljon is sent there too as soon as they arrive in early Dec . He immediately takes command and orders a normal siege.

1499 Jan-May
England finally has made peace with France and cedes Calais and Kent.
The Papal States, despite having captured two Irish provinces and almost a third, come away from the negotiations emptyhanded.

May 24 Hainaut falls, the Dutch flag is up! Despite the siege of The Hague still going on, we decide to go for peace now that Cologne is still holding out (narrow escape) and an army in Spain is boarding a Spanish fleet.
We offer Spain a treaty whereby its rights to Zeeland and Flanders are signed over to the Netherlands. They accept!

Jun/Dec
Algier sends a DOW to Marocco, and its ally Turkey follows suit.
Russia makes peace with Kazan and accept only a small indemnity. Their war efforts have obviously gotten them nowhere. Unfortunately for Sweden the Danes have not commited many forces to the war, and have only strengthened their military presence in Norway and Skane.

Two more royal marriages are concluded with Venice and Baden.

In November Poland decides it's once again time to declare war on Turkey This time they field only 43k men against the 30k Turkish armies (not counting troops that may be underway to Marocco).
The Poles have a good general this time though and by the end of December some 23k Poles under gen Ostrogski have no trouble completely defeating the 12k army in Pripet under Sinan (yes, the same). This is bad news for Turkey.

To sum up the Dutch position now:
Our monthly income is up to 16
Yearly income up to 50

VP's read:
1. The Netherlands 129 (yes, we're back, but don't worry we'll drop a couple of places soon)
2. France 116
3. Spain 75 (was in no.1 position before, but the Dutch war cost them points)
4. Switzerland 64
5. Navarra 57
6. Portugal 53
7. Turkey 52

greetings, Oranje

Oranje, you and the other AAR writers are very kind to spend the time to document the games. Another tremendous installment.

Shame about the Papal States War of Liberation in Ireland, I guess the King of France 'persuaded' the Holy Father that Kent being in French hands was more important.

No doubt he reminded the Pope that Avignon would be a nice place for another line of Anti-Popes if he didn't agree :)

Oranje's Dutch AAR, part 4 1500

1500 Jan
Our good Lord, Duke Karel van Gelre agrees that The Netherlands will now need to concentrate on further improving the economy for a while; another war against Spain is unthinkable for the coming 5 years, unless we would be willing to suffer a full drop in stability, all the way down from +3 to -3, which we don't think a very good idea. The huge stability drop would occur despite having a permanent right to declare war on them (as long as they hold any 'dutch provinces') because of 2 reasons, having the same faith is good for a -1 drop in stability, and declaring war within 5 years after signing a peace treaty with the same country delivers a staggering -5 drop.

Anyway, it's decided to send 2 more merchants to Venice and another 2 to Holstein (that's a 4*8=-32 for the Treasury).
We also conclude another Royal Marriage with Sweden and accept Baden to become a member of our alliance.
Bohemia sadly refuses such a request (as it turns out they've got other plans an ally themselves with Hungary).
Russia has meanwhile included Pskov in their alliance with Denmark, and Spain has managed to lure Poland and Kurpfalz into theirs.
Austria has finally founded an alliance, be it only with Württemberg.
We find France has a permanent cause for war against us, which is probably hardcoded in the game (my dear Duke Karel doesn't understand any of this but it sure has him worried nevertheless), but wasn't noted before.

As to the Polish-Turkish war, their inclusion in the Spanish alliance has brought the complete alliance into the war with Turkey, so the Turks face quite a challenge (sorry missed that at first).
Gen. Ostrogski has marched his 14k men south to Bessarabia and is battling the 6k Turks there. A 16k Polish reinforcement is marching south from Lithuania, but they'll need some time to get to the hotspot.
The Turks meanwhile are frantically recruiting armies all over their European provinces.
Ostrogski annihilates the Turks in Bessarabia and lays siege to the city of Ostrakov with his remaining 12k men.

22k fresh Turkish forces are marching ........ south! in stead of trying to stop the Poles.
Maybe the Turkish high command is afraid Spain sends in an expedition army.
Anyway their main fleet under admiral Daoud, 87 ships strong, is lingering off the Tunesian coast (waiting to intercept the Spaniards?).
The Spanish fleet however stands at only some 15 ships, their discovery expeditions to unknown parts of the globe must have run into some serious trouble, they've lost half their fleet last year.
Wonder if the Turks know about this .......

Then out of the blue comes a peace treaty between Poland and Turkey, where Turkey cedes Pripet to Poland again, although sofar they've only lost that single province. The Turks must have been very frightened by the big alliance they found against them (and maybe by gen Sinan's defeat right at the start of the war).
It seems the Poles could have achieved a little more in this war. Apparently though, Poland suffers some serious financial troubles, as they weren't building any fresh troops yet, and they promptly disband most of Ostrogski's troops after the war, leaving him just 1.000 men to withdraw with.

Near the end of the month France then declares war on Spain, followed by all of its allies, Savoy, Navarra, the Papal states, Sweden and Switzerland.
Spain's allies donot let them down either, so Lorraine, Scotland, Kurpfalz and Poland join in as well.
This is a major war!
Spain seems to be at a disadvantage though. France's allies alone field more troops than Spain's 95k already and France itself has huge armies of about 160k.
French gen Foix is in Champagne with some 30k, while Spanish gen Cordoba (Gran Capitan?) is commanding 39k in Roussillon.
At the Dutch court it is hoped that the french efforts will be directed southward ...... :)
The records of this war have been shortened somewhat to keep things readable (or so I hope), so several less important battles/events have been omitted.

Franche Comté seems to be the first target for the French. The 5k spanish forces in FC are quickly reinforced by 23k from Lorraine.
A large french 45k army marches on Lorraine from the west, while Foix closes in from the north.
A 12k swiss army tries to get to FC as well, but is intercepted by another Lorraine army numbering 12k, reinforced somewhat later by 15k from Kurpfalz.
Another 50k french army marches north from Provence, and so does Cordoba's army from Rousillon, just as another 40k spanish forces further south in Iberia.
Navarra's huge 55k army is marching north as well .....; so do 44k Papal forces from Emilia.
This is going to be one big bastard of a battle if everything comes together.

Meanwhile, Scotland and Poland donot seem very interested to get involved, they probably fear the French fleet's strength.

Feb-Apr
The Swiss seem to have the upper hand in the battle against Lorraine at first, but the 15k Kurpfalz forces will probably arrive at the scene just in time to reinforce the struggling Lorranians
Feb 27 The first french 45k wave hits Franche Comté, two days later Foix reaches Nivernais and is now just one province away from FC.
Mar 1 gen Cordoba has ordered a quick march for his men and reached Lyonnais. His army too is now just one province away from FC.
Mar7 Sofar the Lorr/Sp forces in Franche Comté are fighting the french bravely, french losses already at 7k against 4k for the defenders but the situation already now seems rather desperate for Spain.

Mar 9 The Kurpfalz army is too late, the Swiss have sent the Lorraine force running back north again to Alsace.
Mar 15 The remaining 9k Swiss army is called to their second battle, but massive Papal and French help is underway through Milan and Savoy respectively.
The Lorraine/Spanish army in FC is beginning to show cracks now, they loos another 4k in the battle
Mar 16 Foix arrives in FC before Cordoba. The remainder of the Lorr/Sp army immediately flees north and Foix lays siege with a grand total of 69k french forces.

General Cordoba is closing, but his 36k army is only just over half the strength of the french.
15k French reinforcements are still underway to FC as well.
Cordoba therefore makes a new plan and marches on Switzerland now in an effort to help the 14k Kurpfalz army there. A small 4k army coming in from the north has not been notified of the change in plans, arrives in FC and is butchered. The Swiss are loosing out meanwhile, only 4k remain, help had better arrive soon .....

Mar 27 Cordoba gets to Switzerland first; the combined 50k Spanish Kurpfalz forces have no trouble annihilating the Swiss in just a day.
Gen Cordoba then realizes that mountainous Switzerland will take a huge attrition toll if he orders a regular siege, and he decides it is best to try and quickly storm the fortress. Obviously he's not aware of the Papal forces closing in from the south.

Apr 4 37k Papal forces arrive in Switzerland and engage Cordoba immediately. Meanwhile 10k freshly recruited men from Lorraine march south from Alsace to Switzerland to reinforce Cordoba.
Apr 7 Another 6k Papal force march into Cordoba's meatgrinder. Already 5k dead, Cordoba loses 1k.
Apr 11 The 47k french army coming from Savoy reaches Switzerland as well. Cordoba now faces 86k enemies, his own forces numbering 41k.
Apr 20 Cordoba does splendidly, another 12k losses for the Fr/Pap army. 22k Spanish reinforcements closing in from Lyonnais and 12k fresh Spanish troops are coming from Alsace.
Foix meanwhile is still besieging FC, his army has been strengthened to 70k.
The Navarra army, still numbering 49k is marching in Berry now, apparently en route to FC as well.
Apr 25 The Fr/Pap army flees SE to Milan (where only 19k Papal forces and 29k French forces will arrive). Cordoba's remaining 36k army lays siege to the Swiss fortress.

May 1 the 10k Lorraine army reaches Switzerland, attrition leaves Cordoba with just 40k total.
May 8 22k Spanish reinforcements reach Switzerland as well.
May 9 Cordoba makes a second attempt to storm the fortress.
May 18 Franche Comté seems set to fall to gen Foix's troops pretty soon, as 48k Navarra froces close in to reinforce the 68k siege force already there.

June Cordoba's repeated tries to storm the castle have sofar failed to produce the desired result.
More reinforcements have come in, the siege army is up again to 53k and Cordoba is replaced as highest in command by General Colonna.
A further 15k Sp detachment is closing in.
The Navarra force has reached FC, can't be long now.
Jun 18 Franche Comté falls to the french. The combined forces under gen Foix then march north to Artois.

July 7 The Swiss pay 250 D in a separate peace with Kurpfalz. (this is important, if only because now there are 2 separate wars; one between Kurpfalz and France's alliance except Switzerland and another war between Spain's alliance except Kurpfalz against all of France's alliance including Switzerland.) Kurpfalz must be feeling very small and vulnerable now.
July 8 Switzerland falls to Colonna. He then marches on Milan, a rich target. The Papal and French troops that fled there earlier have marched west through Savoy and north to Artois.

Elsewhere in Europe lots of fortifications are being reinforced, especially in minor countries. Ofcourse the Netherlands doesn't feel minor at all, so we refrain from doing so (just kidding, we cannot afford the 100D per fort needed).

Aug-Dec
A 42k French/Navarra army reaches Artois and starts to storm the place. 50k more men (Fr) are closing in.

August 23 a splendid party is organized at the court in the Netherlands, to celebrate Karel van Gelre's 25th birthday. Lots of whine, women, food, music and laughter at the performance of a small travelling clownesque acrobat group. A good day to remember!

Late in the same month news reaches the court about a peace between Marocco and Algier, neither side gaining anything from the war.

Early September, just when everybody starts wondering what's holding them up, Spain annexes Switzerland.
Meanwhile the Fr/Nav siege army in Artois has little luck with the Arras fortress. They losse men like flees, the army down to just 71k.
The same holds true for Colonna in Milan, although he's not loosing as many men. There's 37k left, and 15k reinforcements on their way.

In october just 5k Kurpfalz men lay siege in Champagne, which, if succesful (unlikely) could help them make peace with France.

Oct 20 Milan falls. Colonna heads back north (to regain FC?) instead of going for the Papal states further south.
The 40k french immediately leave the siege of Artois to the 28k Navarra army and head south again to Nivernais.
The french start raising another 14k army in Bourgogne, which troubles our court. Maybe we'll have to get our whine elsewhere next year?

Nov-Dec
Most armies start repositioning for what seems to become another big battle.
12k fresh troops from Lorraine march south
40k french under Foix march SE from Nivernais
14k french in Bourgogne march due East
49k Spanish under Colonna in Switzerland march NW
all these armies targeting Franche Comté once again.

Comments are as ever very much appreciated.
greetings, Oranje

Hmmm... i was thinking that instead celebrating Karel's birthday, you should have stabbed Spain in the back... her main forces are occupied with the French and liberation of all Holland's provinces should be close?
