Golden Oldie of the Week : Oranje's Dutch AAR
Happy newyear everybody,
(this AAR can be accessed here as well: http://home.hetnet.nl/~copia-fs/
including screenshots)
Here's my first try at an AAR for the Netherlands in a GC (hacked the files just a little bit), playing at hard/agressive settings.
I start off with only one province, the province of Holland in the game, more or less resembling the historical position and situation of the Dutch province of Gelre at the time.
Further starting position: treasury 300d, 1k army, no fleet, poor tech levels throughout.
All in all a very poor start compared to the other powers. The game is played without the special missions option; some of the tasks are just too easy, and AI countries don't get any either.
As I probably won't have much of a chance to do anything about the rest of the Spanish low countries in the first couple of years, I'll try to keep track of what the AI countries do as well, and give you some flavor of the way wars are fought between the AI countries.
It'll be slow going at first, I've only played some 5 years sofar. Later on I'll probably speed it up somewhat, so please don't expect me to keep up the level of detail that is included in the text for the first few years.
Please let me know what you think.
Introduction
It's the year of the Lord 1492 and Holland/Gelre is in a very weak position. The tax income for the country is only 23 a year, and trade and production income stand at close to zero.
Duke Karel van Egmont, also known as 'Karel van Gelre', spends great lengths of time discussing the proper policies for the coming years with his advisors, one of whom has strange but remarkable ideas on how the country should be run and what priorities should be observed. The long term goal must be to conduct a limited war against emperor Charles V, who still has his policies set on including our beautiful country in his realm, and has been contesting our right to rule for a long time now. The aim in this war should be to quickly free a couple of the territories next to our own from his crushing government and force a favourable and lasting peace treaty.
However, the country's economy is in bad shape and at present can hardly afford the upkeep of any standing army at all. First all energy must be devoted to forming an alliance with other nearby countries in order to put the ideas Charles V might hold about a possible quick annexation of our beloved country on hold.
Most available funds in the Treasury should however be invested in the economy for now, and the army should only gradually be built up. As our main adversary is right next to us, we will not invest much in naval tech for now. The appealing thoughts of exploration that have also been mentioned by the new advisor will have to wait.
Karel, himself still a young man, finds himself attracted to these ideas and promotes the new advisor (yours truly) straight away to the most senior position.
Part 1, 1492-1493
1492 Jan
First we do is to send our only available diplomat to bordering Hannover in order to establish an embassy and pave the way for a future alliance. At the same time an offer is sent to arrange a royal marriage between our countries, which luckily is accepted. This is deemed necessary as alarming notes have been brought to the attention of the court that indicate Hannover would be willing to consider a long term close relationship with England. This would not be a favourable development in Karel's view, so the arrows of our diplomacy are directed to Hannover first.
Of the available 4 traders, 2 are sent to nearby Flanders and the other 2, although much more expensive, are sent to the rich COT of Venice.
Feb
The next month bad news arrives from Venice, both our traders have been kicked out of the Cot just days after they arrived, what a waste of good money and men.
It's decided to sent new traders to the Russian COT at Novgorod and to Flanders.
Startling news arrives from the east: Poland has declared war on it's old enemy Turkey. The Poles send massive forces, numbering some 130.000 men south to the western Black Sea coast, and the Turks send some 140.000 men north to halt the polish invaders.
Apr
Our ambassador has convinced the Hannoveranians that an alliance between our two countries would be in our mutual intrest; this is very good news indeed, as Hannover fields an army of some 35.000 men. That will stall Charles V for now. The alliance should be widened shortly however.
July
After some minor skirmishes with small Turkish bataljons have been fought by the Polish army laying siege to Bujak, the main Turkish army under general Sinan arrives at the scene and a big battle is fought.
80.000 Poles clash with 100.000 Turks. After just a few days the Poles retreat to Bessarabia with horrendous losses (45.000); general Sinan immediately orders his army to follow the enemy into Polish territory.
Hessen is persuaded to join our alliance, despite their differences with Hannover. Obviously our diplomatic efforts are proving to be very efficient.
Meanwhile Spain has forged an alliance with England, Milan, Naples and Lorraine/Lotharingen, while France has allied with Savoy and the Pope, and Tuscany has bonded with Parma, Genua and the Knights of St John.
The last mentioned alliance is differing from the others in the sense that it will only expire in 1699, as opposed to all others, which have a duration of ten years only. Remarkable indeed.
Elsewhere Granada is still fighting bravely against Spain in a minor war that was already going on at the start of Karel's reign. The Granada army is really putting up a fight: they've already conquered the rich province of Andalusia and are heading for their next target, but at the same time Spain is besieging their capital province, so Granada cannot raise any extra troops and can be fully expected to loose the war.
Aug
The remaining 44k Polish army is quickly caught by gen. Sinan's troops after their retreat north to Bessarabia.
They suffer staggering defeat and are butchered to the last man, the Turks still have 66k men left after the battle and immediately start besieging Bessarabia.
Sep
Sinan decides to storm the city under siege and captures the province in just a few days. He then proceeds North to Krementjug with his remaining 58k army.
Oct
Cologne is the next member for our alliance after a Royal marriage has been concluded a few months earlier; this policy is really getting us somewhere.
General Sinan meanwhile is laying siege to Krementjug, while the Poles desperately try to raise extra troops in the province. Krementjug is stormed and taken early November by the Turks however, which annihilates the effort of the Poles to raise troops. The lesson to be taken from this is that you should avoid raising an army in a province that might come under siege before the new armie is extracted and ready to fight (morale for new armies starts at 'demoralized').
Nov
Sinan still has 46k men left after the succesful siege of Krementjug and another 15k reinforcements are on their way. The Poles have no army left to fight with and seem to be subject to the mercy of the Turks.
Sinan mercilessly marches his men into the rich province of Ukraine, as the smaller 15k Turkish army heads for Podolia. This army is soon found to be incapable of storming the Podolia province by itself and Sinan with his army turns West and leaves Ukraine be for now. He apparently aims to help out the smaller army besieging Podolia.
Dec
Winter strikes in eastern Europe; both Ukraine and Podolia are snow covered. This will greatly hamper the Turkish supply lines and heavy attrition can be expected for the Turks in Poland.
Granada meanwhile is still holding out against the Spaniards; the war lasts a lot longer than expected but the outcome still seems inevitable.
1493 Jan
Our ambassador had an excellent meeting at the drew Brandenburg into our alliance.
Also, the Dutch army recruitment pool has now risen to 20.000, the present maximum. We could theoretically raise those troops now, and another 10.000 in the course of the next year, but that would put quite a burden on the budget. On my advice, Karel decides to raise only a few thousand troops now, just enough to not let the growth in the recruitment pool go to waste.
Recruitment costs in the Netherlands are very high though, 1k Infantry costing 10 Ducats, 1k Cavalry is priced at 36D and 10 artillery pieces cost a staggering 48D.
The total treasury at start was 300D and is close to 200D now; in fact we're just another poor country at a large disadvantage compared to the big guys. At this point, even the small partners in our alliance boost combined forces of about 90k men. This is one of the reasons I've advised Karel not to mess with Spain anytime soon; we cannot hope to win such a war on our own, and we risk not gaining enough enemy provinces for the Netherlands if we call on our allies to join the effort to drive Spain out of the Spanish low countries. The big and real risk would be that the allies would take a lot more territory than we could hope to take ourselves, most probably we would end up not winning enough provinces to secure a favourable peace treaty.
Poland applies its yearly income immediately and starts mustering fresh troops in five different provinces, but the Turks still seem to be in the winning mood. Sinan reaches Podolia but with only 33k men, to reinforce the 11k already there. This siege won't last very long now.
Indeed Podolia falls already on the 8th, Sinan has some 44k men left. Turkish reserves are dwindling too at this point and apparently there is not much in the treasury to build more troops, or the recruitment pool is empty.
It seems Turkey would be sensible to try and make piece with the Poles shortly.
Sinan marches on the province of Galicia however; apparently the Turks have set their mind on gaining more than just one province from this war.
Feb
35k Turks under Sinan reach Galicia and almost immediately start to storm the place. The city is taken by Feb 15. Sinan then marches on Krakow with just 27k men.
Spain has meanwhile conquered Granada's only province of Sierra Nevada, a total collapse of Granada seems imminent. The Spanish 23k army marches on Andalusia, in an obvious attempt to free that province from Granada rule.
Mar
A newly recruited Polish 8k army marches toward Bessarabia first , while a small 6k turkish detachment sets course for unfortified Pripet, one of the provinces where the Poles try to raise a new army. As soon as the Poles notice, they turn west to Pripet, hoping to beat the Turks in being there first (unlikely). This will be a race against the calender for both Poland and Turkey!
Near the end of the month Sinan reaches Krakow with his 27k army still intact and immediately lays siege to the city.
Apr
Hanse declines to be our ally, a decision they'll most certainly severely regret some day.
Pripet falls, Krakow is still under siege. The Polish army, meanwhile strenghtened by another new detachment to 13k is still no match for Sinan, but tries to get to from Chernigov to Podolia now, thus closing the supply line for the Turks. More Polish forces, totalling 9k are marching south, while the Turks have 3k in Bessarabia and 5k in Bujak, trying to link up (but to no avail, as they need to make a time consuming river crossing).
The Polish 13k army gets to Podolia and lays siege to the province capital. Soon the 3k Turkish detachment gets there too and is solidly beaten by the Poles, no survivors, whereas the Poles suffer no casualties at all. The 6k Turkish army in Pripet is marching south but gets to Podolia too late to make a difference.
The 9k Polish reinforcements are on their way, while the 6k turkish army in Pripet is still trying to reach Podolia. Undoubtedly they'll get theirs too upon arrival. Why the Turks don't sue for peace yet is everybody's guess. They hold 5 Polish provinces, so they should be able to conclude a favourable deal.
The Poles then suddenly give up the siege in Podolia and march on Galicia to confront Sinan. Seems like a foolish decision of the Polish AI. Probably they'll be intercepted by the 6k Turkish army marching south from Pripet though. The resulting battle should become the next Polish victory in the war.
Meanwhile more Polish reinforcements are marching in from Chernigov, while the Turks are marching north from Bessarabia. On the 26th the Poles completely destroy the 6k army coming in from Pripet while only loosing some 400 men themselves. The remaining Polish 12k army again lays siege to Podolia.
Then the same events repeat. The Poles decide to march on Galicia and Krakow, but will probably be checked by the Turks marching in from Bessarabia with just 5k, before they manage to leave the province.
May
Wrong estimate made, the 12k Poles reach Galicia and lay siege. The 9k reinforcement is still trying to get to Podolia from Chernigov, but it's taking them a long time, because of the river Dnepr in between the two provinces. Meanwhile the 4k Turks coming from the south reach Podolia and marches west to Galicia.
They're caught off guard by the 9k Poles coming in from the North though and are completely destroyed at the hands of the Poles, who loose just 900 men. The Poles then march into Galicia to reinforce the 12k army already there. The Poles have some 20k in Galicia now, another 6k bataljon is underway from Podlasia and more are being recruited.
Elsewhere in Europe, Denmark and Russia have found each other in their obvious alliance, whereas France has lured Sweden into theirs. Also, Spain has invited the Scots to join their alliance (imagine England and Scotland in one alliance, I bet that one won't last very long).
Victory Point wise, the Dutch are doing pretty good sofar. We fully expect our position to suffer a lot though before we find the right path to the top ranking. We're in 3rd place now, behind the Pirats? and inevitable Spain, whereas France and Turkey share 4th place.
Jun
Another 6k Polish bataljon reaches Galicia, making the total force present almost 27k now, about the same size as Sinan's army in Krakow.
Jul/Sep
A royal marriage is concluded with Kurpfalz; good news, hope to include them in our alliance soon.
Amazingly, Granada is still holding out against Spain. Spain has failed to regain Andalusia, and Granada has meanwhile miraculously captured two more Spanish provinces, Toledo and Extramaduras. If they would only be able to recapture their capital ........ (must be a Dutch twitch, love to see Spain having a difficult time
)
Oct
The foolish Sachsen ruling family refuses to engage in a Royal Marriage. Our most beautiful niece and mistress had already been talked into it but the Sachsen heir to the throne simply refused bluntly. Maybe there are some rumors about our little private pleasures spreading despite my clear intentions of keeping things within the mighty walls of the Dutch castle?
The Polish army in Galicia has been brought to about 30k, and the city seems to be set to fall pretty soon, while the Turks have discovered that they'd better reinforce Sinan's army somewhat if they want to achieve anything in the siege of Krakow before winter hits again. The Turks march about 5k reinforcement around the Polish position in Galicia to bring Sinan's total army to 32k.
Nov/Dec
Galicia falls to Poland, while Sinan is still having trouble to subdue Krakow. Turkey now clearly gets the message and sues for piece with Poland, stil claiming Bessarabia and Pripet, as well as a small financial indemnification. Why Turkey asked for Pripet (locked in by Polish territory on all sides) instead of Podolia, must be some secret at the Turkish court.
Spain has finally succeeded in destroying the small 11k Granada army that caused them so much trouble and is in the proces of regaining the provinces temperarily lost to Granada rule. Extramaduras is the first to fall; it won't take long now, as a 40k Spanish army is active in the area.
greetings, and best wishes for you all,
Oranje
