As happend again in todays Blorg Stream, the scince ships of Wiz got kicked out instantly uppon establishing Contact with the Fallen Empire.

I have the strong opinion that this is a gamey mechanic - even Wiz said "dont establish contact so we can stay".

How about adding an option to "ignore" the newly discovered claims uppon first contact (for a time) at the cost of a massive relation penalty?
You would simply get the option to set your diplomatic state to something like "hostile" or "ignore" so you can still enter and act normaly in their space but they are free to attack your ships while in their space.
Maybe limit the possible access to Civilian ships, and for military ships a declaration of war is reuqired.

My goal with this feature is, to soften the instant kick out, that is out of the players (AIs) control to a form of transition state where you actually have something to decide and weigh oppurtunities (an additional planet, more systems explored one more anomaly etc.) against the risk of upsetting an potential powerfull foe.

To prevent exploitation maybe limit the transitorial phase to one or two years after wich you either declare war for the contested territories or have to withdraw.

I agree, choice is important... even unwise choices, such as pissing off a fallen empire with an unarmed science ship. Although the science ship captains might not want to die, maybe they're fleeing, orders or not.

I think the mechanics are right, there are no physical borders. And as long as no one has told you that space is theirs how would you know?
There must be some contact by the "aliens" that tells you to leave. All a matter of plausible deniability

It would be nice to have a way to cloak your ships while travelling across foreign territory, with a monthly chance of being discovered depending on your relative technologies and the distance to enemy sensors.
Discovery could lead to a huge relations hit, your ships being considered hostile while on their territory and perhaps the possibility to escalate the tensions to a full-on war.
