1942.

May, 23rd.

The free world is holding its breath.
2 years after the infamous invasion of the British home island, the German eagle spreads its wings to clash with its American brother.
Canada is to fall first - Within 10 days the vital cities of Halifax and Saint John are occupied by German troops and provide a safe bridgehead for the German troops. But how could this all have happened?

--2 years earlier--

After the devastating series of defeats in Poland and France during 1939, the unstoppable German Wehrmacht steps over the channel to invade Great Britain. America, outraged by the defeat of France, had already joined the Allies in the winter of 1939, but could not prevent the German landing in May 1940.
Covered by a fleet of several battleships, a carrier and serious air-power, Germany was able to secure the area around Dover and quickly pushed the British garrisions back.
After this initial stage of the operation, the troops conquered London and quickly drove to the north, securing the Island within the summer.

In 1940 and 1941, German the fleet-buildup was intensified to prepare for the next long-term-plan: An invasion of America.

Step by step, Germany forwarded its naval presence deeper into the west, conquered Iceland, Greenland and finally, Newfoundland - which would serve as the final base before the invasion could start.

Until the end of may, the first wave of the invasion-force had gathered in Newfoundland, ready to move out.

The order came on the 22nd of May, 1. and 2. Marinesturmkorps began their preparations for the landing...

The initial landings near the vital port of Halifax did not meet any resistance, though the situation was still critical as the troops now had to conquer the port to establish a supply-line.

Heavy fighting ensued within the upcoming week, when the US-Navy tried to encounter the german invasion-fleet. They managed to sink the Battleships Bismarck, Tirpitz and Hindenburg as well as several smaller vessels, but the Carriers of the fleet survived and managed to retreat into the just secured harbor of Halifax.

Finally, the second objective for Phase 1 was secured, when Saint John fell into the hands of the German 1. Fallschirmjäger-Division.
Now, the way was open for the heavy troops to push into the enemy land.

During the first days of June, the Wehrmacht advanced further south, while heavier resistance gathered in Bangor.
To the north, the Wehrmacht was almost unopposed and again it was a quick strike of the Fallschirmjäger that conquered the city of Quebec on the 17th of June 1942.

But the hardest part was still to come...

--------------------------

Note:

This is, as you can see, a gameplay-AAR, not very much narrative, with lots of pictures and so on. The reason is, that I am quite lazy and do not want to take the risk of writing huge texts for nothing. Maybe, if enough people are interested and my motivation is high enough, you will see some more descriptive parts. But not for now.

I know that my approach is rather uncommon - conquering england is one thing, conquering America a very different. I will try it nevertheless and maybe I will fail severly. Depends on the Soviet Union as well. Right now, their Neutrality is still at 72% and I can hope they will not attack me. If they do, I will have the nastiest 2-frontline-war ever.

The reason to attack America was that it entered the war fairly early, in 1939. As my friend stated: "It would not be wise to attack the SU now, or do you want to have the second industrial superpower against you?" - So I chose to kick out the Americans first - now, or never.

I will give you an overview of the current state of the world in the next update, right now I do not have the picture at hand.
By the way, speaking of updates: Do not expect me to update daily - I will update as I play and depending on how much people are demanding me to continue writing. The higher the interest, the higher my motivation ;)

Have fun while waiting for the next episode!

With Hoi3, yes.
In Hoi2, there was a nice AAR about the invasion of the United States (The Grey Alert), but it did not last very long... Let´s hope this one does not end this way as well ;)

Awesome! Launching a trans-Atlantic invasion of the US before conquering the USSR is a gutsy move, can't wait to see if you can pull it off before the Soviets attack. What's your threat level?

Battle of Monson does not look as bright.
The front is currently bogged down, the only progress is made by a lone Panzer-Division pushing to Montreal and Ottawa.
American resistance is fierce!

Awesome. One of the most challenging and daring operations I ever played - I regularly felt that I was loosing...
At this point, something had to happen, otherwise I´d be screwed.
More is to come, I played some time today but I don´t want to post it into a mega-update ;)

What is your supply situation like? I would assume that US has naval superiority?

Naval superiority for sure, but they are not using it very much to raid my convoys. Now and then I loose 1 or 2 transports, which is a pity but not threatening. The supply-situation is nevertheless uncomfortable - and it is hard to judge what the problem actually is. To few ports to supply the frontline-troops? More time needed for the supply-lines to catch up?
Probably it is a mixture of reasons, because it got somewhat better when my troops only stood there and took their time to reorganize.

Fighting with -50% supply penalty is badass...

Almost certainly, your supply situation is due to too few and too small of ports to supply such large forces, including fuel hogs like Panzers and Panzergrenadiers.

If you have any fleets based in North America, rebasing them somewhere else will help some. If you have planes you can do without out, rebasing them away would help, too. Capturing American ports its the longer-term solution.

Operation Speerstoß,
29.6.1942 - 6.7.1942

With the deteroriating supply-condition of the troops in the North, that only received ammunition, rations and fuel from Saint Johns and Halifax and the fact that the front was bogged down and rather stagnant because of the lack of supply leaving the troops in inefficient fighting-conditions, the Oberkommando of Heeresgruppe Amerika had to find a quick solution to secure the supply-lines and consolidate the bridgehead on American mainland which was far from secure even 1 month after the initial landing.
The vast amount of american troops threatened to push the germans back, once they were repelled and disorganized, as they fought under better circumstances than the invaders.

Again, it would be the task of the special forces from 1. Marinesturmkorps to commit a daring assault to distract American troops, open a second frontline and secure supply-routes on the long term.

kowwkvx148wf.jpg

The Invasion Plan against Boston

The initial landings near the city suceed because no troops are guarding the coast, and an attack from two direction into the city begins. Resistance is fierce, but there is no option for retreat.

zj3x9woz31p3.jpg

On the way back, parts of the Kriegsmarine are detected and engaged by the USN and have to retreat, losing 2 Cruisers and several Destroyers

2vgp36d1ks5c.jpg

1.7.1942:

A telegram by Commander of the Boston Invasion-force, Biess, states that the combined effort of his division is slowly crippling American resistance. The city will fall if no American reinforcements arrive in time.
Luftwaffe orders intensified attacks on the city to speed things up.

3 days later, victory is certain and only a question of time, but American forces still refuse to retreat for another 2 days.
On July, 6th, Boston falls into German hands.

Reinforcements from continental europe are prepared to being shipped in.

Northern Front,
25.6.1942 - 4.7.1942

"Nothing new on the northern front" during late days of June.
Battles of Monson and Bangor are bogged down and show only negative progress.

In early July, the 16. Panzergrenadier-Division finds a hole in the American line and starts advancing.

4qmpiln8ofk3.jpg

It arrives on the 5th of June, defends sucessfully against an attack from a lone Mountaineer-brigade. Generalmajor Kamecke orders an attack on Rockland, trying to seal of the defenders in Monson and Bangor to even the supply-situation between the combattants in the north.

76b9bn1orn74.jpg

"Who dares wins", is the motto of the German troops in North America. The Wehrmacht does not have the ressources to do anything safe. Every risk is taken, if the effects are desirable.

Will luck again be on Germanys side?

New England is hardly ideal terrain for the Panzer divisions. If the Americans can bring up reinforcements quickly they might be able to contain your landings to the Maine/New Brunswick area. Let's see how well the AI reacts.

Northern Front Advances,
6.7.1942 - 11.7.1942

r1t4lwjau81z.jpg

The Battle of Bangor seems to turn slowly for our favour; Battle of Monson has a contrary tendency, it seems like the Wehrmacht would loose this Battle of nothing happened.

t6tctqdlvsge.jpg

In the South, Reinforcements are now on the way from Belgium, including armed and mechanised forces as well as simple infantry.

hdokfclgkssz.jpg

In the North, a lonesome Panzerdivision is sealed of on its road to capture the important eastern canadian cities. It is issued to turn around as soon as the current attack is fulfilled to break out of the pocket.

oyprwo27luz.jpg

Kameckes 16. Panzergrenadierdivision arrives in Rockland and cuts the supply-lines of the troops massed in the North. The Battle of Bangor is quickly supported from the Panzergrenadiers falling into the american rear, raising the odds in a favourable way.

25 hours later, the battle is over and American forces rout, after having held firm a full day under massive aerial bombardement from the Luftwaffe.

73x4pzujh8fe.jpg

While mechanized forces push to the south to link up with the bridgehead of Boston, the Battle of Monson is continued to break the troops in the pocket.
Unfortunately, it takes an alarming turn...

c5njpo2by1uh.jpg

Having sustained heavy casualties, the last german troops that had pinned down the Americans in Monson are forced to cancel attack. Immediately, American troops start to move out. The Headquarters of Heeresgruppe America are in Chaos, orders cannot be fulfilled because of a sudden lack of supplies and it takes another 3 days to manage the situation.

To long? Or sufficient to stop the escape?

See next time wether the invasion will come a good step closer to sucess or fail... ;)
