You get Free claims at 1 january so you start with these. After Italy, Greece is the best target because of religion. Carthage can be made a Client state so you dont get the religion or culture problems, but you can annex them directly if you want to.

You simply conquer Samnites than Etruscans.
They are pushovers (comparingly), and can be annex within 1 war.

Ok So I guess that the early opening move gives itself, but then comes the question where to go next?

Southern Italy and sicily I guess will have good civilization allready and be easy to manage once conquered, but Pyrrhus and Carthage could be powerful opponents

Northern Italy and then Gaul could also be an option as well as northern Italy and then going east could be an option, and that would probably open up for colonizing a lot, but perhaps also for migratory tribes, barbarian hordes and the like

A third option would be going over the sea, and then the Greece mainland or Carthage or Egypt could be interesting.

But the big question is, where will it be most beneficial to go? (and I do know the game is not out yet :))

The speed at which you expand seems to be largely based on fabricating claims, making free claims (of course) and larger wars seem optimal. As Rome, expanding north gets you the most power quickly, and I have seen the AI declaring war on the Etruscans causing issues. After that, expanding further south may be a good idea because they're the same culture group and religion, but they're smaller nations and without them forming a defensive alliance it may not be worth the power cost.

What will likely be best is expanding into Greece asap annexing Alexander's empire as they're still the same religion and have high civilization. Carthage can wait despite the free claim as having such a wide empire early with a large mix of cultures and religions may slow down progression. Making them a vassal may be a option, but I doubt it's optimal.

Expanding into uncivilized lands seems like a poor choice for most of the game as there are a lot of small, different culture/religion, low population cities with barbarians attacks. It's likely best to conquer just about the rest of the world before bothering with France, Germany and even Spain.

Does anyone know what claim events Rome gets? I assume Eutruscan and Samarites is the one on 1st Jan. Is there any others? Do you get a separate one for Carthage?

Thanks!

You get most of southern italy and Erutria on January 1st, then claims on Carthage like a couple years later. Then, claims on Epirus, then finally claims on Macedon when you've won against Epirus.

Strange, I've never seen them expand into Carthage.

After the initial land grabs in Italy, it seems pretty clear that the Greek clay is what you should want most, so for western borders I'd be inclined to just go for what's most defensible - take Italy, take the islands in the Med but none of Africa, and take Cisalpine Gaul so you can sit behind the mountain passes. Then let that all sit pretty for a few generations while you eat you eat up mainland Greece, then Asia Minor, down towards Egypt, and so on.

I'll try to expand in historical order of things. Not necessarily historical dates, but for example I will do the full Punic Wars with each one's territorial gains if at all possible.
