So I was going for the "This time for Africa" achievement, which states:

As Ethiopia, found the African Union and have it encompass at least 13 different countries with capitals in Africa.

So I thought I would need to do the focus "The African Union", right? Wrong, it turns out I should have read the wiki and it seems it's another focus you need to do called "Towards African Unity".

Still, I had a fun game:

Guess the achievements could occasionally be may be a little clearer??

Well done, and congrats on conquering most of the world!

I'm also currently playing as Anarchist Ethiopia, and it's pretty rough start compared to The Emperor Stays/Federal Empire path that most people recommend. I don't think I'd have the patience to play until 1953, so hopefully it doesn't take me that long to get the "Red Sea" achievement.

It's okay, you're not alone in suffering trying to get achievements with weak minors. I recently got the Battlecry achievement which is to conquer all of China and Japan as a warlord. Everything was going fine - until Communist China joined the Allies when it rose up. Since the achievement requires the territory to be fully annexed in a peace deal, I had to fight every faction except the Axis all at once, as the Guanxi Clique.

This meant:
To have any hope of defeating the Allies, the Axis needs to stay alive so the Allies are distracted in Europe.
To keep the Axis alive, I have to disband the Chinese United front and join the Axis to help them survive and win against the USSR. I also need to send as many planes as I can to Europe to stabilize the air war, which the Allies had won by that point in 1943.

Germany was on scraping the barrel by 1944 and I had to basically invade Japan, finish off the USSR, kick the allies out of Europe and the Med (and got lucky and trapped the entire Royal Navy in the Med, which let Vichy France naval invade the UK), and naval invade the USA all by myself.

It took until 1952 before I could get an achievement that should theoretically be relatively quick and only require you to beat Japan and the other Chinese minors.

Other highlights of the run: Non-aligned Portugal joining the Axis and then attacking Nationalist Spain, forcing Nationalist Spain into the Allies, me stealing the Japanese and Soviet navies so I would have any hope of reaching America, Italy falling into civil war, being almost completely annexed, coming back once Chinese troops arrived, and then Iraq blowing up and repairing the Suez Canal repeatedly because somehow they got the territory there at some point.

Historical focuses on by the way, and I took no ahistorical action as China up to the point where the PRC joined the Allies (aside from usurping the nationalists as GXC). I was just the leader of the United Front fighting Japan when PRC decided to go off the rails.

Wait, that one requires you to annex the territory? Does that include the small chinese bits owned by britain, france, and portugal? So youd have to go to war with them anyways right?

I feel like in the latest patches everyone joins the Allies, even if they werent guaranteed before or have a common enemy. For example Sweden joined the Allies when I attacked them, even though the Allies were in the middle of getting whooped by the Axis and I was in no faction as nonaligned Lithuania.

Thankfully, the "Battlecry" achievement doesn't require you to own the 3 treaty ports of Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangzhouwan. See the code below.

I think the original version of this achievement also required those 3 states, but that was changed so you don't have to conquer the whole world (unless you really want to).

Code:
battlecry = {
    id = 65

    possible = {
        OR = {
            tag = GXC
            tag = YUN
            tag = SHX
            tag = XSM
            tag = SIK
        }
        is_ironman = yes
        difficulty > 1
        has_start_date < 1936.01.02
        has_any_custom_difficulty_setting = no
        game_rules_allow_achievements = yes
    }

    happened = {
        custom_trigger_tooltip = {
            tooltip = battlecry_tt
            all_state = {
                OR = {
                    is_owned_by = ROOT
                    AND = {
                        NOT = { is_core_of = CHI }
                        NOT = { is_core_of = MAN }
                        NOT = { is_core_of = JAP }
                    }
                    state = 728
                    state = 729
                    state = 326
                }
            }
        }
    }
}
