This AAR follows an alternate path of South Africa. The British never took the Cape Colony from the Dutch, and in 1836 the small nation has declared independence from its rulers in the Netherlands.

I am running Victoria 2 AHD with the APD mod. Also, I have KanyeWest's titles for governments mod running. My own personal modifications are to the national flags of South Africa, the government titles of South Africa, and deletion of most of the British pops (replaced with Boers).

There will be no cheating aside from the initial modification.

Suid Afrika, 1836

ScreenShot2013-03-26at42514PM_zpsf1dba211.png

As the Dutch garrison had been withdrawn, the first formal Suid Afrikan army was trained. It was first led by General Joubert Pretorius, who was of Huguenot origin.
Many Boers were enthusiastic about joining these new divisions, but only the best were selected. Since rapid expansion into savage territory was a priority for the new Republiek, the improvement of supply systems was set as a task for the intelligentsia of the Cape.

Meanwhile, a new opportunity came in the form of Suid Afrika's first stock trading company.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at42713PM_zps94054d83.png

The news was enthusiastically reported to the Wetgewende Vergadering (Legislative Assembly) - Boers were having more and more children!

ScreenShot2013-03-26at42754PM_zpsd0de6fe5.png

The new Weermag (Army) had marched through the bush for many days, and were now assembled just before the border of the wild lands controlled by the savage Xhosa.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at42816PM_zps3f377340.png

The declaration of war was given to the tribal chiefs, who did not take it very well. The brave diplomats ran for their lives!

ScreenShot2013-03-26at42835PM_zpsec46be23.png

The threat of the wild tribes just outside Suid Afrikan borders was deemed so grave, that only complete power held by the President could protect the new nation.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at42915PM_zpsadc46e55.png

The army advanced further into the bush.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at43036PM_zps5619c695.png

The Xhosa's mounted warriors repeatedly outmanuvered the Boer infantry.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at43051PM_zpsd6ec6c71.png

But they were finally caught.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at43414PM_zpsb39e4703.png

Utterly defeated, but defiant till the end, the Xhosa dropped their spears.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at43303PM_zps681c4333.png

Meanwhile, the first problems develop with the new government's ordinances against public meetings.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at43428PM_zps24cc913c.png

Die Republiek Van Suid Afrika was destined to be a world power. All knew this in their hearts.

Liberal Rising

Suid Afrika built her first factory in the Cape.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at71413PM_zps22eef869.png

The first warship of the Suid Afrikan Marinewese is ordered. Labourers toil in the hot sun of the Cape harbour!

ScreenShot2013-03-26at71523PM_zpsc9b47b16.png

How dare they? The valiant Polisie rush in with heavy truncheons!

ScreenShot2013-03-26at72014PM_zpsd3eb222d.png

Encouraged by the new government's heavy handed policies, some disaffected Boers left the Cape to establish a new democracy - Natalia. When the President found they had handed themselves to the British, he was infuriated. But cooler heads prevailed and war with Britain was avoided.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at72258PM_zps32f130b2.png

The decision is made to exhibit Afrikaner culture to the world, even if Afrikaners were not sure yet just what Afrikaner culture was.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at72429PM_zps6cceab0b.png

How dare the heathens of Lesotho take our brave citizens hostage!

ScreenShot2013-03-26at72454PM_zps55555d57.png

Nevertheless, war with Lesotho was not a pleasing thought, at least at the moment.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at72945PM_zps1b4bdfab.png

Liberals were getting bolder and bolder, even brandishing weapons openly. The lightly armed Polisie could do nothing but watch, and the Army was spread too thin.

August 1841: Disaster strikes!

ScreenShot2013-03-26at73211PM_zps5c8ff5d5.png

The President and his cabinet left Cape Town early in the morning, and boarded a ship to the Netherlands. Little was left between them and the gallows.

January 1842: Rebels led by Hendrik De Wet storm the capitol.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at73619PM_zpsa5e22882.png

The Dictatorship is no more.

Should be interesting! So had you intended the overthrow of the dictatorship, or was that unexpected?

Rensslaer

@rensslaer Thanks for reading! The creation of the dictatorship was entirely random, but the pops really hated the no public assembly law. I don't think South Africans like anyone telling them they can't have a braai! So about the moment my militancy hit 3.00 a big stack of rebels spawned in the eastern cape and overwhelmed my regulars.

APD makes rebels really, really tough.

Tragedy strikes! The prestige of Suid Afrika in the face of the world decreases significantly because of the liberal uprising.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at73719PM_zps3f4e9ae3.png

Thankfully, the new Prime Minister of the small nation is a visionary leader, who inspires courage in the people.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at74012PM_zpsebe5938b.png

The election campaign is a close one, but the results soon become clear.

The Liberal Afrikaner Bond declares a massive victory.

ScreenShot2013-03-26at74535PM_zpsfdf21212.png

The Xhosa were getting uppity. Many likened it to a "Kultuuroorlog".

ScreenShot2013-03-26at74553PM_zps68b59968.png

Cholera strikes! Many provinces in the Eastern Cape are quarantined.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at101402PM_zpsa2671bca.png

The new liberal leaders got a little boered (see what I did there ) and declared war on the weakened Zulu nation.

The clouds of war gathered!

Watever Man

ScreenShot2013-03-27at101424PM_zps6b7e3fb2.png

Oops. Lesotho honored her alliance with the Zulu.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at101527PM_zpsa5d0459c.png

The new President was like "Watever man". He ordered the mobilization of all the Kommandos, which were citizen-soldier units. Hopefully their superior firepower would best the native armies.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at101601PM_zps978de938.png

Meanwhile, the nascent South African Navy blockaded the Natal Coast.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at101618PM_zpsb69c41a4.png

The first engagement began, and the Lesothan numbers thinned.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at101639PM_zps9405da1e.png

Reports came in, and it was clear that South Africa had won a resounding victory, some claiming a 10 to 1 ratio of Boers to tribal warriors killed.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at101712PM_zpsbefec622.png

The routing natives were pursued into the mountains...

ScreenShot2013-03-27at101715PM_zps291fc675.png

...and soundly defeated.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at101850PM_zpsc0177576.png

ScreenShot2013-03-27at102128PM_zps246fb6c0.png

Two more victories and the natives were crushed.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at102243PM_zpsfcde59a2.png

Occupation began, and little resistance was offered.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at102446PM_zps8f8dd7c6.png

Victory! Cape Town decided to add the annexation of Lesotho to their demands for peace.

Awesome new AAR! There needs to be more APD AARs, and I always have a soft spot for the Dutch. For curiosity's sake and for colonization later, how many Boer pops do you have since you converted all the Brits?

@thoctar
Thanks for reading, it's really appreciated!

At the current point, Boer pops comprise about 24% of the nation, out of 880,000 total pops, and 220,000 adult males. In total there are close to 54,000 Boers, so I only have one focus point to use.

Once Lesotho, Zulu, and Swazi are annexed, there will most likely be far fewer Boers in proportion to the total population.

Very cool AAR! A question: is there any way to attract immigration to your republic, or, alternatively, to trigger some assimilation?

@germanpeon Thanks for reading! Before when I have played South Africa, there has always been massive immigration (500 to 1000 pops a month), but only under very liberal govts. I'm hoping my brief stint with a Presidential Dictatorship hasn't damaged my immigration potential forever.

@dodedo Good question! Since they are a British satellite, I'm going to wait until I have GP status, and then I shall use all the influence I gain with them to reduce the brits to hostile... then I will declare war and hope for the best. By then I will probably have some good allies, I'm interested in Prussia being my friend...

Ons Sal Staan

Uit die blou van onse hemel,
Uit die diepte van ons see,
Oor ons ewige gebergtes
Waar die kranse antwoord gee.
Deur ons vêr verlate vlaktes
Met die kreun van ossewa.
Ruis die stem van ons geliefde,
Van ons land Suid-Afrika.
Ons sal antwoord op jou roepstem,
Ons sal offer wat jy vra:
Ons sal lewe, ons sal sterwe,
Ons vir jou, Suid-Afrika.

To provide a springboard for the invasion of Zululand, war was declared on Swazi.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at102639PM_zps16d03404.png

No resistance was offered.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at102645PM_zpse8b5b183.png

The generals had made a prudent move by invading Swazi, since the Zulu armies would have mauled any army suffering the attrition of the unsettled bush.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at102810PM_zps9909c840.png

Swazi is brought to its knees.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at102822PM_zpse7dd169e.png

Now, the real battle begins.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at102844PM_zps2b97427b.png

The Boer soldiers do very well, inflicting massive casualties with their breechloaders.

ScreenShot2013-03-27at103101PM_zps336c55e9.png

Separate peace is made with Lesotho...

ScreenShot2013-03-27at103050PM_zpsabbf7805.png

...and then Zulu falls.
