You know you don't need to stay connect to play the game, right? I would still have to download from gg, so, on that aspect, there shouldn't be any difference from Steam.

This was the main complaint years ago when it was more fashionable to hate Steam, nowadays it is not as resource hungry and most 'real gamers' apparently have such super rigs that they don't mind the slight performance hit. Anyway - go check out the thread I linked so you can see all the insults traded by both camps.

If you bought CK2 through GamersGate, then buy EUIV through GamersGate to get the CK2-to-EU4 converter tool. Otherwise, even if you bought through GamersGate, you will get a copy of EU4 through Steam. GG is just selling the game. Steam will deliver it to you.
