So, the random race generator's tenancy to create multiple empires using the same species appearance while leaving other appearances unused broke my immersion and annoyed me. Easy solution seemed to be to create as many custom empires as I wanted to play against, each with their own appearances, set them all to the 'always spawn' setting, and just look the other way when pre-sentient or pre-ftl species still recycled appearances.

Except when I did that, I still got randomly generated empires appearing, a Paradox premade appearing, and presumably not all my custom empires spawned (haven't explored the entirety of the galaxy yet to confirm this).

Any ideas why this solution didn't work? Or does anyone know how to arrange the game so you only play against your created empires?

There are 3 settings on the starting empires. Are you sure you have the setting (the one with the little lock symbol) activated that will force a custom empire to spawn and not just give it a chance of spawning?

Yeah, I double checked that myself as soon as I found a Paradox premade in the game. I do have all 48 custom empires all set with the lock, and set the game to have 48 ai empires, so assumed I'd only see the empires I created.

it could also be that the early space age races joined the galaxy and you meet these people. I've seen them ascend as early as five years. I don't know that there is a limit on how many are populated, but I recall them not being affected by the settings.

Yeah, pre-FTL going FTL was my first thought too, and I can't entirely rule that out. The first species I encountered was a PDX premade, though, and I don't think premade empires randomly generate as pre-FTLs.

RossMorris, thanks for letting me know that. I'll look into it. Are the PDX premades set to a 'will always spawn' setting such that they would spawn alongside custom empires set to always spawn if the total number of AI empires was equal to the number of always-spawn customs, though? If so, that might fix my problem but, if not, I'd think I'd still be getting randomly generated empires despite wanting a custom-only game.

Oh, i think they can. After all i found pre-ftl humans on earth once, and they would have become the united nations of earth at some point (if i hadn´t purged them..)

Pretty sure they wouldn't become the UNE- they'd become just a randomly generated empire. If they did, I'd assume it's because pre-FTL Earth is a scripted event, something unique to humans in the Paradox pre-made empires.

I've seen Human Early Space Flight Pre-FTLs end up as things OTHER than the United Nations of Earth. I've also seen the United Nations of Earth look a little bit different if Commonwealth of Man is also tossed into the mix.

Coulda been that maybe?

Interesting. Good to know, and thanks for the input. When I have time to play this weekend I'll use console commands to see if that's what's going on. I think the culprit might be a map generation mod, but we'll see.

Me too: while playing as the CoM it spawned with a different flag (the one with the stars, not the outline of Earth) and a slightly darker blue color. Did not check about other things. I'd be curious to know under what circumstances this happens.

Using the observe cheat, you can see all Empires on the map. and doing this regardless if you make 6+ custom empires and set them all to be forced to spawn in your game you will still only at Maximum get two of your custom empires to spawn or if by chance Halley's comet is passing over head and the planets align you may get 3 custom empires O:
(out of 8) , and the rest are random non custom empires. Every single time. you know, when you set 7+ custom empires to force spawn, that usually means i want to play against MY custom empires, you know like, thats what FORCED SPAWN means doesn't it? why am i only getting 2 or 3 custom empires when i set them to FORCE SPAWN?
