Why is there a limit of messages you can have in your inbox/outbox?

Umm, if they do not take space how do they exist?
Basically this is not an e-mail or messaging service, this is a forum, you are encouraged to have public conversations not private ones.
We do recognize that some things are better by PM so we allow basic functionality of private messages.
How many you are allowed depends on your access and ranges from none to unlimited, with most users having the same as you.

Castellon, I understand what you are saying but please consider upping this limit to 60 or 90. Most users don't use them, after all, but there are some of us in PBEM games (take Pride of Nations Multiplayer for example) that base our "diplomacy" using PMs. Yes, we could use an e-mail (although too intruding to give an e-mail which is used for real life), but a PM once you check these forums is the ideal mean to discuss. I check these forums once a day when I am available for play and communication. Mail intrusion would be too much.
You can dowload and save them, then delete them here, that basically gives you unlimited storage.
You can set your PM box to send you an email when you receive a PM. In this email is a copy of the PM and you would not have to give out your email address to anyone. That way you have a backup of each message received and you can just delete the PM's you have read. I have set these emails to go to a specific folder in my email account so they don't clutter my normal inbox. It doesn't completely solve your problem, but might help some.
I know I can do many things, guys, but there is one thing I really wanna do... separate gaming life from real life. The PMs and the forums here could be a convenient way to keep all things together in a nice tidy place. I really doubt upping the message limit from 30 to something more realistic (90 or 120) would crash the servers out of space.
I will still have to backup and archive, but not every 10 days or so as it happens now, but much less often. The PBEM titles use a lot of PM diplomacy. Consider the PM space in this forum a "feature" that should go hand in hand with the gaming experience of your games and the support you offer generally. In that respect, increasing the limit of stored messages will be considered a nice feature.

I did raise it about a year ago to 30, I think it was at 20 before (that is a 50% increase for the mathematically challenged), there is a higher limit for those playing forum games that is available by request.

I need to clear out my PM box every day or two. All regular forumites have the same limitation, why are you so special?
You interpreted this the wrong way. It wasn't me that asked for special privileges. It was Castellon that said he is giving them to those playing "forum games". I ask more PM box space for everyone!
