I even pause the game before doing so, but as soon as I cancel a technology I'm in the process of researching, the game crashes (just for me, no one else).
Admittedly we are using a modded game, but we've reached 6 January 1946 (from 1936) with very few issues.

I think the issue is caused by Japan having lost of lot of tech slots after being nuked - so the game should be removing the tech slot completely after I cancel the tech - but instead crashes.
