Have you ever had it when you move an army from one province to another and all your brigades loose 250 men each?

They died from a short walk!

This will be the death on me, how do forge an empire when your people die from walking? It doesn't happen with every nation I play, mostly the ones lower down on the leaderboard.

Can someone help me prevent this? I hate it!

It's attrition. Check the supply limits of the provinces you walk into.

Though if it's mostly with small nations, your soldier pops may be migrating or dying from disease.

When your army is besieging the region, it gets a better supply limit, so when your army moves to somewhere else with not enough supply limit, you'll get attrition. The first region losts the besieging supply limit bonus, and your men suffer attrition.

I don't know if there's some AI attrition bug in AHD, but in vanilla the AI dies of attrition just as badly as humans - unless you mean that the AI moves armies around not minding the casualties it takes through attrition, which it totally does and is a chronic bane of Egypt in particular.

Their armies don't lose anyone from moving around and don't take attrition whilst in my provinces or any province which shouldn't be able to support the numbers in their army.

It is AHD I'm playing with and it is really screwing up my game. I can raise more troops than them, but because I'm taking attrition and they aren't, I can't actually build a stack big enough to take out any of their armies :(

Keep in mind that if they have cores on territory you own, they can walk into those cores and not suffer much attrition. The core multiplies for supply limit is 4(I think), same as for allies and countries which give you miltiary access.

It might have something to do with supply range technologies. If they are better advanced they somehow don't suffer attrition. It's all mysterious to me so I just pretend it doesn't happen.

If you see a large enemy army not taking attrition, you could try saving the game and loading as them to see if it's an AI effect (and thus a bug) or an effect of technology and/or other factors.

I've loaded the save and changed to playing as them, the armies suddenly start taking 10% attrition and are whittled down to pathetic numbers in a matter of days. But reloading and playing as my country they just stay massive the whole time.

It's either a bug or some AI cheat, but I can't find anything in the files to indicate the AI can ignore attrition.

The supply limit is increased by the chemistry techs. That's one of the many reasons those techs are very important.

Ok but that's pretty much hocus-pokus to me.

so If I were to have a 50 brigades strong unit and moved it in a region of 40 supply capability, after a few techs, that wouldn't become a problem?

And why do enemy teritories always have such low supply cap?

In that case, you should post a bug report (or anyone else with AHD who can verify this). I doubt this is intentional.

And why do enemy teritories always have such low supply cap?

Medicine/chemistry techs allow you to better treat infections and preserve food, thus leading to fewer non-combat casualties. When you're in your own territory, you get the full support of the local communities plus whatever military logistics infrastructure would be in place. When you invade some other land, that is no longer the case.

i have the same problem with AI france not taking attrition they occupied a good half of my Germany and were just ping ponging off my armies and sending so many smaller stacks to just go chill out somewhere away from the fight and take things i kept thinking to myself where is the attrition no way a french army would survive 2 provinces away from Berlin

The problem is attrition is only calculated after besieging. That means if you move an army to a province and stop there, your army starts to besiege it and that double the supply limit. Then the game calculates attrition so your army doesn't suffer attrition. Your army only suffers attrition at the start of the month while it's moving and not besieging. Note that it is only applied to an unoccupied enemy province (and no other army is besieging it). But if you move your army through a province without stopping, they will suffer attrition at the moment they enters that province. That leads to huge attrition if you move your army throught several provinces without stopping at each province. And in late game, it only takes 3-4 days to move to an adjacent province, you may lost half your army in a month if you select a destination far from its current position.
