1. In elective monarchies, any valid candidate for election can start a faction to install themselves as the monarch.

plus

2. The AI will almost always accept an oath of fealty, even from someone vastly more powerful than itself.

means

3. Any superduke can swear fealty to the HRE then immediately begin a war to take control of the HRE.

This even works for a non-bordering, non-de jure, non-co-religionist duke. E.g. a Russian superduke can swear fealty to the HRE and then immediately try to hijack it.

Solution: Apply "Distant Realm" to "Swear Fealty" calculation (works for offer vassalization so why not?). Right now pretty much the only way you can't swear fealty to someone is if they're scared of your de jure liege, which is incredibly silly.

Yepp, this issue is pretty major imho and I have started similar topic about it. Glad I am not the only one with the same opinion.

Atop of the distant realm modifier I would very much appreciate some sort of strength calculation as well similar to EU3 joining HRE where if you are too powerful you simply won't be let in so you couldn't hijack it... Currently in CK2 you can hijack pretty much any state even without elective succession laws with some effort (marrying and such).

Isn't the point of strategic marriages usually to take control of a foreign throne (or at least put a relative on it)?

I do agree that the swear fealty thing is pretty ridiculous though. Do factions still get magical mystery attritionless troops out of nowhere? Even if they don't, the fact that you only have to capture a handful of provinces before enforcing demands is pretty absurd.

Before factions it was rather hard and very rewarding. You had to plan, marry, plot and often murder your way onto the throne. Now all you need to do is join a realm (they accept you *always* regardless of *anything*) you or your close relative have claim for, on day 1 create faction to install them on the throne and send ultimatum. After the war starts you just invite half the realm's vassals to your side and the war will virtually win itself. With elective succession as OP points out you can isntall yourself directly. It all takes very little game time and with some gamey tactic you can install your kin everywhere in few decades...

In the earliest versions a kingdom could join any empire. This would mean that if France joined the HRE it could very easily get control over all of the empire. But now kingdoms can only join their de jure empires. But maybe the strength ratio should be used instead like the OP says. This way a weak kingdom can also join a powerful empire to get its protection. And supredukes can't usurp any kingdom they want.
