because lanes are predictable. you'd know where to build defenses and it could turn out into a massing war, instead of fighting all over the place. It would be very casual, is what I'm trying to say. I don't see it as a bad thing, just saying it could be fun.
Ah, sorry. When I see "arcadey" on the Paradox forums, I tend to assume it means a bad thing.
I don't know that I'd call it Arcadey any more than Crusader Kings is "Arcadey". I mean, you can enter a given province only from certain other adjacent provinces. Can't go from Constantinople direct to Paris without all the stops in between.
My first game, I do intend to play the evil Empire, and I intend to play with only hyperlanes because that's the way the game (Escape Velocity) on which the Empire is based works. But like they said in the stream, I like the strategy and the choke points that can be created. You can do the same early on in "Endless Space" before the technology to travel without hyperspace lanes becomes common. (Usually I control half the Galaxy by then, and so it's just grinding the other races into the ground.)
But in my second game, I'll probably do a random start (I intend to start in the Sol system in my first game) and allow all FTL travel options.
