Nice to see Sardinia-Piedmont removed, I really hate their colour. That's one annoying presence within the borders of the Republic. Now you've OPMed Genoa they'll be gone soon as well and northern Italy will all be Milan's glorious purple.

France and the Pope  Maybe they didn't appreciate your two recent wars and the rebel sponsoring. Spoilsports!

@OrangeYoshi I think the Byzantines are still around in Kaffa, although the GH will probably gobble them up soon :(

So, what is the plan now? Drive to link up the levant and balkan's or link up the balkans and the homeland? Or another round of crushing the blob? Or something completely different? Nice move with the Byz's and I'm surprised that Castille hasn't jumped on the French but maybe they're waiting for you...

You have a pretty industrious AI going on. Morea has taken southern Greece and Transylvania is taking them over? o_O

Wow, my AI minors usually sit there and wait to die. Well, I did have a Croatia today who would have conquered Hungary if the HRE didn't help.

Welcome to the World or War Crafts...

Today we're making popsicle stick Popes and Aluminium can French Monarchs.

Lets get right to the viewer mail...

I think I might cry........Byz is gone.......:(
Good going with the revolt placement, though.
-Rebs are fun... Unless the AI gets a burr in it's saddle and wants to use them on you. Which the French are doing now that the money is rolling in again...
-And the Byz are still alive. If you ask it, I will GTY them and ensure they live until the GH wants to fight me for them.

-I agree, their color was a tad... 'bright'. I felt like they had their headlights in my eyes all the time.
-It's funny when you're playing and you just know what an AI nation is going to do. France has been after me something wicked this game, and I knew they would EXC me if they got the chance. They've started rebuilding, and are not so quietly working towards war again. I wonder if they have the nads to DoW me again. If they do, I'll hammer them until they don't exist.
-Every once in awhile a nation will have a change of heart on a reload form a save. I'll see once I restart. It would be good for France if they did...

So, what is the plan now? Drive to link up the levant and balkan's or link up the balkans and the homeland? Or another round of crushing the blob? Or something completely different? Nice move with the Byz's and I'm surprised that Castille hasn't jumped on the French but maybe they're waiting for you...
-I don't know. (what...?!!!! Oh Noes...!!!!) I have a rocking 5+ BB, plenty of room for anything. I'd like to get out of Europe. The Mams are begging me to take Alexandria. The Otts are being plundered by the New Triumvirate, so I have to wait until they get done to see what's what.
-There's still the north of Africa that needs taking around the Med.
-England is the new Castille. Something really odd happening there, and Portugal is playing very strangely too.
-I'm thinking the Mams make the most likely target, but I have that truce thingy, so I'll need to play weasel. And I do need to go thru Hungary and down the coast to link up the Greek areas with home.
-And Liguaria. That is a priority target, which I suspect France will seek to protect.

You have a pretty industrious AI going on. Morea has taken southern Greece and Transylvania is taking them over? o_O
Wow, my AI minors usually sit there and wait to die. Well, I did have a Croatia today who would have conquered Hungary if the HRE didn't help.
-Firstly, welcome...!
-I'd have to agree with you. This has been an odd AI game from the start, and the aggression level (though still set on 'normal') has been to the active side to be sure. Usually the Otts go nuts, but they lost theirs instead. Portugal would be all over seas, but their not. Castille would be pushing to unify, but their not. England would have gone bankrupt 20 times over, but they haven't. Burgundy would be alive, but they're an OPM.
-I can't wait to head East... I can only imagine how weird everything is out there.

Working the SoftR report, but much shopping and gift making to do today.

Maybe version 3.2b is attempting to show that it still has some tricks up its sleeve. It could be trying to avoid getting updated :D

Will do! Not that it matters much to me though, as I'm not sure when I'll be reading - I got my Bachelor's degree yesterday so I've got some partying to do :) Nothing extreme though, as I will study further, but combined with iceskating, which I love and which the weather finally permits, said partying will probably keep me away from the computer for a while. But rest assured, this Knight of Milan will report for duty again sooner rather than later!

I think perhaps she is jealous, as HT³ sits next to her on the desktop just 2 drive letters away... :p

Congratulations are in order...! I salute you Sir, and well done...!

Please to remember party beverages and ice skating can lead to serious on ice injuries, like broken tail bones and abrasions due to rough ice surfaces... Especially when one tries to skate on his face. :D Party beverages are best consumed sitting on level surfaces after skating, preferably near a fire, with a cozy bar stool and many friends. Please, raise a glass and have one for me, a toast to your newly acquired "BS"... er, degree. Yeah. Degree. Sorry... Got carried away.

Finally, remember thou the golden rule of all things: "It's all fun till someone loses an eye..."

I want you to be able to read the update when you get back...

Thanks for the congratulations for my (funnily enough) admittedly BS achievement :D I shall have one for you, and I just might toast Milan ;) No-one will find it odd as I am, as mentioned, an AC Milan fan. Therefore I can maintain the secrecy by just keeping the double meaning to myself.

Trust me, I've found out that drinking should be done AFTER ice skating, not before. And it's even more important with ice hockey, where losing an eye would otherwise be a pretty realistic option.

But off I go!

AC Fan :( I'm an Inter fan myself, having failed to make any emotional connection with a team in England, although I supported Liverpool when I was a kid. Imagine how I felt at the end of THAT Champions League final  Hopefully Milan in this timeline will be rich enough that we won't have to share a stadium.

State of the Republic Address: 1502

A hush comes over those gathered as the President and Speaker reaches the podium...

"Welcome, one and all."

The President pauses for a moment before continuing...

"It is truly a great time to be part of the Grand Purple(ish) Republic of Milan..."

The President looks down at his speech, as if searching for the words already written on the page...

"When our founding fathers finally sorted out the paperwork, filed the petitions, formed a military and carved for themselves a Kingdom, they had a vision. They had an Idea that all the world would embrace the purple(ish)ness that is Milan..."

The Speaker stops, rubbing his eyes, wiping the small tear that creeps from his eye. 'Put on a show' they said. 'Sell it' they said. 'It's for the good of the country and the people' they said.

"When all was said and done, and they were told 'Yer a Nation'..."

The speaker winced slightly...

"They had no idea they were stepping into far more than pee..."

He waited momentarily as the groans subsided. Cousin or no, he was getting that new speech writer for Christmas if it killed him. Or the cousin... Still, he had to continue.

"They had no idea the of the sh..."

The President stopped... He shook his head, disgusted. He angrily crumpled up the words and tossed them aside, his eyes darting to and fro in fear as he did so. After a few moments, he collected himself, took a deep breath, then continued.

"I apologize for this. I must beg your pardon and your indulgence, for the matters at hand are delicate, and dangerous."

"People of Milan, I must speak the truth. I have been threatened if I do. I have been warned not to tell you certain things. I have received threats in the mail. My enemies have gone so far as to fill my mailbox with junk mail. Inside are cleverly disguised threats against me, and others who would keep Milan true to the founders ideas. That my very life is threatened..."

"The truth is, there are those in this government who have sought to subvert and plot and manipulate the future of Milan. These are heinous, despicable people, who would use the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes Grand Prize Giveaway Notification to their own wicked intentions. It says you could be a winner... But I will never know the truth. That envelope only brings me a prize of death...!"

At the mentioning of this word, there was a commotion to the right of the speaker as the no longer very secret service swarmed on two suspicious looking men...

The first man turned out to be an ordinary peasant who chose to reach into his tunic to scratch his armpit at precisely the wrong time.

The other was one Antenello Vespuchi, a well connected assassin with ties to the underworld syndicate in Lombardia.

Apprehended, Antenello simply smiled as he was hauled away. Government Officials filed out of the Address, eager to get back to the Castle and question him, but they never got the chance.

The security detail, and Vespuchi, were mowed down in a hail of cross bow fire while making their way to the prison. The fact they were being led to the other side of town, heading in the wrong direction, didn't seem to register on the guards... Although it is unclear if anyone got away, there are two bodies unaccounted for in the mess that was left in the narrow back alley.

Meanwhile, in a secret meeting at the IHOP down the street, the Knightly Register is updated to display the newest Secret Knight of Milan:

PR_597KR.jpg

Back in the real world, as the President was being whisked away... Clerks, petitioning for a name change to "Official Document Specialists", posted the particulars of the state of Milan on the walls of official buildings, as required by the law.

All documents are available for viewing during normal business ours.

The Official Milan Wall Map:

PR_598.jpg

You can obtain your very own copy of the Official Milan Map by forwarding 3 ducats to the castle with your name and address. This beautifully crafted Map of Milan shows the Nation in all it's Splendor and Glory, and is the perfect addition to any room. And as an added bonus, if you order right now, we'll send you a bonus set of Sham Wow's...!

Our Current Religious Situation:

PR_599.jpg

Lots of yellow means good, right...? For now. For now.

Here's the Updated Trade Map:

PR_600.jpg

Wall Alley predicts a sharp downturn in Venezia after the acquisition of Liguaria, but some analysts suggest the draw from further takeovers in the Mediterranean area will soften the turn, and could potentially draw even more revenue. This in turn would allow Venezia to remain concentrated in the Italian Sector and prevent future stock splits that would water down the prices and flood the market with low gain market shares.

The Core of the Matter:

PR_601.jpg

A healthy core keeps us well balanced in the region. At no point are we risking over extension at this time. Northern provinces will provide excellent counter balance to the poorer Eastern areas we will require to fill out the Mediterranean campaigns.

Culturally Speaking:

PR_602.jpg

The tipping point has been reached. Any more acquisition in the European theater will eliminate any accepted gains in the middle east.

And now your Local News...

Milan, At A Glance™:

PR_603.jpg

PR_604.jpg

The slider move is wide open this time around. Centralization remains an option, and a good one... But with a current -2 we have a 'turn to burn', so it's the perfect time to look elsewhere.

Mercantile would help tremendously with getting some actual advantage to the monopoly situation. As it is now, our current Compete and Maintain %s aren't high enough to hold a monopoly.

Many Tech Levels are at or ahead of time, Including GOV, TRA and LAN. LAN is only 1 year, GOV and TRA are 3. I will be hammering GOV for the next NI this time, so it may pop. That's another wide open decision. Trade? Moral? Religious CB Enhancement?

Current GNP:

PR_605.jpg

Some up to date Tech Level Comparisons:

PR_606.jpg

PR_607.jpg

PR_608.jpg

Production is lagging, having been sacrificed to Trade after level 9. It will need to be brought along, as PE will start to explode as buildings and manufactories come on line.

Naval is well, Naval. Though now that we have crossed the Pirate threshold, it becomes a much more important tech and will be receiving regular investment.

Total Armies and Navies:

PR_609.jpg

PR_610.jpg

Look at England, Castille and Portugal here...

They are seriously after it this game. France is already half way to rebuilt. I have a feeling they still want a piece of me, though I can't take anything but cash and force divergence from them.

To the east... Persia looks like some fun, and if the Poland Lithuania Hungary connection can be made they'd at least be a challenge.

The scary scenari... o...? France and the East hit me at the same time...

Naval is going well. The transition to big ships will begin in earnest with the next level of ship. I hate wasting money on Carracks.

Some Delicious Pie...:

PR_611.jpg

Still a majority of core, even with the new additions. Nice spread of trade goods too. Always a bummer when grain takes up the wheel and it looks like the religion one... Some good culture chunks too.

The Current Center of Trade Stats:

PR_612.jpg

I tried to bump the traders in Görz recently. Over a year of losing the monopoly there. Ugh. Venezia has more than enough room to take the hit from Liguaria. In fact, it should balance the two out nicely, and make for easier monopolizing as I won't have 'Big CoT Syndrome' there anymore.

Lastly, a shot of the whole wide world...:

PR_613-1.jpg

I wanted a look at the road blocks to the east... It looks like 5 or 6 really strong contenders, which will make for some good fun.

Portugal, and her sister England look like a real challenge to complete the Med part of the program.

Yessir. Looks like some challenging road ahead.

From the Gut: France is going to make another run, unless the reload changes her target. She wants her provinces back.

Continue the Mam action. I want Alexandria in the fold ASAP.

While we're there, see if we can't swing into Mecca and head south. With England crashing Africa and the New World, the back door to the way east will be tremendously helpful.

We should begin working the Med to the Atlantic along Northern Africa. The more we take before Portugal can get it, the longer we can delay a world at war. The thought of France and the East jumping me while engaged with Portugal and England is not a pleasant one. I'd like to get one or two of them weakened first...

Open Mic Night is officially open. Your two ducats is welcome. With all of the previous goals pretty much met, the road is really wide open for a change. Where do we go now...?

Drive to Alexandria, then if France comes calling smack her around again and force release some more. Eventually some one else will get the idea and start to dogpile. My next priority would be to link up the levant and balkans because it would really suck if someone like say the English took a base in the Eastern Med from the Otto's.

Given our Naval abilities, Which will be on the rise soon, is the land connection to the Greek territories an earnest quest, or merely a convenience...? I would think that if Hungary were to make herself "available", then it would be prudent to go that way.

I agree about Alexandria. Getting the CoT and the Core going is important. Second only to the CoT in Liguria, where our Core awaits.

France... I think she'll choose her time table. So long as she maintains "independence" and doesn't pull any beefy allies, I think we'll be OK to let her do her thing. However, if she starts making friends and influencing people... That may require a preemptive engagement on our part.

Conquer Greece and Illyria.
Obey!

I think our Greece and Southern Hungarian targets are secondary to almighty ducat, don't you...? We will nee to connect sooner rather than later, but as I outlined above, opportunity to get Hungary alone should take precedence over the need to "connect".

So technically, I'm not disobeying...

Illyria was an interesting look up. Found some really neat maps. They were quite the empire for awhile there...

Invest Naval ASAP since Castille and England are sure to have Caravels very soon. You might not think Castile a major threat since you have a much larger army, but Castile now has a very good reason to DOW you. Castile (being the good Catholic girl that she is) often gets the 'Restore the Holy See' mission and you are the 'infidel' holding Roma. I am telling you from experience that you will get DOWed by Castile if your navy is weaker than hers when she gets that mission. Also I hope that you are not completing any tech levels ahead of the time penalty; production shouldn't be overlooked, it is after all more than double your trade income.

As for the slider move, Mercantilism or Free Subjects look like good options.

Culturally speaking, I will try to post an estimate sometime today or early next week (no promises).

Also, congrats to Malurous!

I think first priority should be Alexandria and Genoa - how much longer with your truce with the mams? if a long time is there an opportunity to take on the ottomans to link your greek and levantine holdings? It is kind of just convenience at this point but you also don't want England netting some bases there, so if you have some time to kill might as well take some otts with it! Plus then you will have armies in the right place for when your truce expires.

Hungary - if you have the opportunity to take her on alone I think you should do it. No sense in letting her keep control of the Med provinces longer than she has to.

I think its particularly important to link up your territories given your naval inferiority, which is likely to last for some time until you research the requisite techs and replace your ships. Plus, even if you catch up with your navy, it is likely that England and Portugal will still have naval superiority when you engage them, so having a land connection, or at the very least military access is prudent.

I agree about the land connection. You'll need it eventually and Hugary is beginning to look a little menacing. Perhaps tossing a warning their way would be a good idea.

Sounds like Merc is the correct slider move. Monopolies in our home COT's are a must and will boost income. This will make you even more money after taking Liguria. This should be arranged as soon as possible, are they guaranteed by anyone interesting?

For a new NI I'm still thinking, but my initial though is National Trade Policy, it would increase income and compete chance. With this and the Merc move it would be much easier to keep those monopolies, but perhaps I'm concentrating on trade too much.

I like the idea of expanding to Mecca and beyond. A couple of cores connected to the Indian Ocean are really useful, plus there's a lot of coffee and spices down there. Combined with Alexandria this would make the area a real money maker for us.

I concur that Genoa and Alexandria are the priority targets, indeed in my previous post I had thought that Genoa was a given. Hungary's Adriatic coast would be a nice morsel to chew on but the need to get to Alexandria will keep you involved in the Levant. So with that in mind I agree with Sir Quicksabre, you might as well go after the Otto's(who are already getting smacked around by the English etc). Or could you take on Tripoli or whoever that is and pincer Alexandria? Just a thought.

Looking nicely poised at the moment. I like the stable heartland of cores that have popped through in the last couple of decades. It's always handy to have some productive Italians and Germans around.

I think at this point the greatest immediate strategic decision is entirely dependant on your cultural priorities. If you still aim to gain the accepted cultures then that must be the next goal, before any other expansion or linking takes place.

I, for one, would still like to see Milan as a rainbow (but leaning towards Purple-ish) nation - the more cultures in the melting pot, the better!

After the near-Eastern cultures, though, I reckon the order of the day should be Med expansion and nibbles on France whenever it gets uppity. Cosmopolitaine should still be gainable as an accepted culture even if you have big gains around the Med since those North African provinces aren't exactly the wealthiest lands on the block.

For the slider move I think mercantile might be the way to go - with your Med focus you're going to be competing with a lot of North German minors throughout the game and trade income can be very important indeed...
