Chapter VI
Chapter VI - Japanese attack on the Dutch East Indies
Rescue of 2 divisions
The air cover provided by my carriers and the quick replacement of heavily damaged transports allowed UK to evacuate the beach and bring 2 divisions back into safety.
Soon a naval battle ensued in the strait of Malacca where the UK lost 1 CV to Japanese CAGs. The British managed to disengage.
Japan kept pushing in Malaysia and the Dutch East Indies.
Loss of Kuching
A single British garrison division was based in Kuching to defend that air field, however, when the Japan showed up, the Allied fleet was not capable of challenging the Japanese. Japan landed quite a few divisions and took the port and airfield. Now Japanese planes can reach most Allied bases in the area.
Naval battles south of Sumatra
As a reaction the Asian British carrier fleet (the one that saw most of the action until now, and it was still damaged) was moved closer. This was a mistake by me, as I forgot that my US teammate didn’t have any backup in the area. Anyway, my CTF was soon caught by faster Japanese carriers (British CVs have 1932 engine techs) - the first carrier battle ended evenly and the Japanese carriers had to withdraw. But Japan had another fleet in reserve and engaged UK. The British CTF withdrew into a nearby Dutch port and was port striked after that. 3 British CVs were lost in these battle or in the small, provincial port.
The British Asian Carrier Fleet is no more
When US reinforcements were coming closer Japan started withdrawing (after landing ground forces to force my carriers to fight) and my remaining carrier escorted by a single light cruiser slipped out and rebased to Ceylon.
1st invasion of Sumatra
The first Japanese invasion of Sumatra was stopped by valiant efforts of CAGs that have lost their carriers. 3 transport ships were sunk with 3 divisions on board. A small Allied victory.
(the ship sunk list doesn’t seem to count these ships - maybe because they were sunk by CAGs that have lost their carriers?)
2nd invasion of Sumatra
The second Japanese invasion of Sumatra (a landing north of Oosthaven) was successful - now Japan tried to take Oosthaven and supported that effort with a BB fleet in the Sunda strait. Exhausted Allied air forces tried to bomb it, without much effect (Japanese FTR from Kuching helped). At the end of the session a US BB fleet was on its way to engage the Japanese fleet.
In the meantime convoy warfare continued, while UK lost quite a few convoys, Japan was suffering horrendous losses.
Allied convoy raiding
... every little green dot is a good thing for the Allies and a bad thing for Japan
Chapter VI – Battle for Spain
Right at the beginning of the session I withdrew all my divisions from the front line. Most of them were quickly redeployed to the port of Vigo, some of them were shipped out from the ports in the north.
The troops made a short stop in Bristol before being transported to Andalusia, southern Spain. British forces quickly took defensive positions along the rivers Guadalquivir and Genil.
Defensive Line in Southern Spain - 5th November
In the meantime fresh British divisions finished production. INF INF ART AT divisions. Most of them received level 3 commanders and they were designated to reinforce Spain, if needed.
Defensive Line in Southern Spain - 20th November
The situation became worse - this is how it looked on 2nd of December
Towards the end of the session axis forces had reached the area and started attacking. In one position they even managed to cross the river defence line - a strong Allied counterattack threw them back behind the Guadalquivir.
Allied counter-attack at Lebrija
In the meantime many air battles and bombardments happened as well. The quite fresh Close Air Support wings were constantly bombing German tank formations.
Close Air Support
The session ended with Germany redeploying its units to the eastern part of Andalusia to ready for the final push on Gibraltar.
Axis deployments December 20th in Southern Spain
The Soviet Union joins the war! (See Rastrigin's very good chapter about the first action against Germany for the Soviets!)
On steam chat the the commander of the UK (me) asked the Soviet Leader Rastrigin for support. I wanted him to DOW Germany while Germany was still occupied in Spain. At least 40, maybe even more Axis divisions were in Spain at that time.
Rast obliged and DOWed Germany immediately launching an offensive towards Romania.
End of Session
Next Chapter will be about the battle for southern Spain and fights in the Dutch East Indies - will Gibraltar, the rock, remain in British hands?
