Chapter VI: The Soviet Intervention
We ended last session in September with a somewhat slow German advance into Spain. Following the German-Spanish war, Soviet Union declared war on Afghanistan as soon as the Soviet troops were deployed on the border (around mid October). Soviet advance into Afghanistan was performed as fast as possible, but still somewhat slow due to bad terrain and infrastructure.
November was coming, by that time it was believed that Germany would have been able to break the MR pact and attack us. However, a huge chunck of the German army was still tied in Spain, trying to advance towards Gibraltar. So an attack on the East was very unlikely for the time being. Nevertheless, the Soviet build-up strategy had been designed to have the red army ready and up-to-date by November the first...
Even if the Germans had broken trough the first line of defence, with some Italian help, the brits were falling back orderly and around this time they were discussing with us whether they should leave Spain or try to build a last line of defence around Gibraltar (I won't go in detail about the western front)
It was believed that a Soviet attack in the East, combined with a strong British defence of the last riverline before Gibraltar, would have caught Germany off-guard. We decided to persue this strategy, well aware of the risk of losing a big chung of the British forces. There were two factors that convinced me about the feasibility of this strategy: the war with Afghanistan, that allowed me to silently mobilize my army without the Germans noticing it, and the apparent weakness of the german front in Romania, probably due to the fact that they wanted to put their schwerpunkt in the Lwow area (in Southern Poland), where most of their panzers were, and didn't expect Romania to become an active front line. With so many German troops deployed in Western Europe we expected to be able to restrain or slow down the German attack at Lwow with the force of our numbers and heavy tanks and gain the time to deal a heavy blow to Romania...
This is the Northern front on the 5th of November. It is deployed in a strong and deep defensive position.
This is the Southern front on the same day. The Lwow region looks ok, ready to take the German punch. The Romanian region still needs to get the last reinforcements and to be deployed offensively (to be done last minute). We are still waiting some weeks because we have some upgrade to finish and we want to make sure that the English defensive line in Spain is stable enough to hold the Germans for some time.
This is our army at the end of November:
As you can see, I heavily rely on heavy armours and militia, both having a very good ratio in terms of power/officer cost. My standard Harm unit is: Harm-mot-td-ac-ac, combining a decent speed (thanks to the ac), high armour, piercing and soft/hard attack values, a good CA bonus and low softness, this will be the backbone of my army. My standard militia units are 5*Mil and 4*Mil+AT. My standard infantry units are 3*inf+AT and 3*Mont (starting)+AT. The AT spam was ment more for the artillery practicals then anything else, but since Germany turned out to have a nice amount of Marms it will be usefull anyway. Right at this time I also started to build an actuall airforce. It was meant to be ready in May 1941, to meet a late, but likely, German attack. I will have to do without them at the start.
Obviously, the reason why I showed you my army is that finally, on the 26th (not exactly sure) of November, a few hours before the fall of Afghanistan (that would have de-mobilized us), we decide to stop waiting and declare war!!
The first progress into Romania
Germany starts its attack at Lwow
A German push for Mariampole is countered with a Soviet attack on Memel
Another attack is initiated in Northern Romania
You tell me what's wrong in this spy report!!
The German push for Lwow has been stalled (many units are being redeployed South to Romania)
The Soviet attack in the South has finally broken through, the Northern attack is about to. However, a powerfull German counterattack from the South is threatening our exposed flank
The Northern front at the end of the session. We have taken the riverline in the North and have managed to stall the Germans in the South
That's it for the session folks!
Hope you liked to finally see Soviet Union in action, quite an unusual opening for SU too! I must say most of these (minor) victories are due to the amazing job the brits have done in the West (wait for their update...)
