Playing with DD (1.1) since last week when I received my CD, I have remarked two rather strange things with the names of the units in the unitnames.csv file.

1. The name of the ex-escort fighters divisions are still there even if their division is now extinct and replaced by a brigade. It means also that when I build a TAC its is named after an ex-ESC. The solution, I found to solve this presentation problem (zerstörergeschwader instead of kampfgeschwader or fighting group instead of bombing group) is to edit the file named unitnames.csv and to manually erase all the escort fighters names in all the TAGs of the file. Paradox programmers have clearly not seen this one.

2. The name of the units that are diplomatically traded seem to be preserved by the receiving country instead of being re-christianed by a name not taken in the list of the country (think about UK giving the 'Nelson' to France or the US ship-lending 'Bonhomme Richard' to a hard-pressed Royal Navy). When the Turks received the german 'Goeben' cruiser they had the decency to re-named her 'Yavuz'. I agree that it is not a vey great bug, but perhaps it could be solved by the addition of some lines of the routine (replacing the old unit name by a new free name taken from uninames.csv).

On this last operation (arm-selling), is there an event command to script it in an event (I'm thinking about scriting an event to simulate the way Mussolini sold several old subs and destroyers to Franco to help him create a Nationalist Nav) ?.

I Discovered this one, too, corrected it on the same way, but didn't do it for all the countries (too much fuss), so a fix in the next patch would be appreciated.

This would be a great feature, it doesn't make sense, that another nation would keep the original name of a sold ship or unit...
BTW i don't want to sound too nerdy or be a Mr.Know-it-All, but the full Name of the turkish "Goeben" was "Yavuz Sultan Selim" meaning "Severe Sultan Selim"...

Re-naming ships is a good idea, although Im not sure the engine could actually do it...

Bad idea IMO, for a simple reason: When a ship is sold, thats the ship you bought: "France bought the XYZ from Brittain". Now, if the receiving country wants to rename the ship, that is also possible -- You can rename your units in HOI, in case you didn't know.

I think renaming automatically may be fine for AI countries, but it should NOT rename for human controlled countries, as that is a matter of the human player's choice.

You can allways rename the unit back as a human player, so there would be no harm done if the naming routine for sold units would be changed.

The problem of the naming of the ship is not as a human player (I know that I can change the names , thank you). It is only a matter of 'ambiance'. The names given by the AI should correspond to national interest. The same is also true when you capture a ship by moving a land unit on a naval base (rare but it happens ... sometimes). The captured ships should received a new names as the french scuttled ships at Toulon that begun a new life, after severe repairs, in the Kriegsmarine or Regia Marina.

The routine should check if the receiving country is AI-controlled ? Seems a bit hard to code. Perhaps when the new unit is available in the rank and file of its new owner (after the one-month lapse of time), it should pop a window labelled :

The ex 'Insert your old name here' sold by our most favored country 'insert your most honored country here' has been included in our armed forces as 'Insert the much new better name here'. As the name change is only active when the unit is effectively available in the new rooster, it doesn't corrupt the save file and you are free to name it 'That' s a very good name Idecided to give to my new toy' as a true human player.
