One of my cronies back in his university days chose 'In silva mea est glis nullus' - In my woods there are no dormice.

I forget what this is quoting from.

It is apparently from Varro, but it is exceedingly obscure. What did your friend mean by it?
A dormouse is supposed to be a rare animal inciting curiosity.

well apart from latin (and greek) being the primordial language of all western culture, with all languages having alot of words derived from it. law, biology, history, art, literature, even music...
i also think it's very close to a formal grammar natural language which for a 3000 year old language is a really remarkable feat. almost being the first programming language as if you knew all of it, you can't misinterpret any given combination. very few ambiguities. that alone makes it something one would learn just from curiosity.

A dormouse is supposed to be a rare animal inciting curiosity.

He thought it was cool, just because it was a strange way of describing an inhospitable place. He wasn't some sort of advocate of dormouseocide.

I don't know about other countries & their languages, but in America, taking Latin is by far the most effective way of learning English grammar. Really. Any language helps, but Latin is by far the biggest aid here. Whether that's something inherent in Latin, or just a reflexion on US teaching of English, I don't know. But it's true.

How would you translate it? The "me" seems odd... otherwise, it would be "I carry all things with me".

Sorry, writing error. It should be (of course) "mea".

As I translate it (very freely) is: all what I have, I carry with me. It changed after I got married.

In silva mea est glis nullus' = In my woods there are no dormice

Romans liked to catch and eat doormice, and introduced them to England. So i would think this has some refference to Roman occupation, only my guess though :)

Can't believe I missed this thread!
As far as favourite phrases go, here's one that carries more wisdom than it may seem:
