Hi all.

Firstly, I should credit clb for his great research on education. All work done by me here is an imitation of his work (on 1.03) using DV with last beta patch. To be more precise, I really did a lot of copy&paste stuff and I will understand if he wants this deleted. If there is a (new) tag, the sentence before is added by me. If there is a (changed) tab before a table or suchlike, it is modified by me. For all tables, cosmetic modifications like tab delimitation is performed.

Secondly, Veldmaarschalk (or some other mod) is free to put this on any FAQ, wiki or stuff (though a reference to me would be nice). Their dedication for supplying and tidying up information for this old game is as touching as Johan's dedication by giving his "free time" for beta patches years after the release of the title.

I would be really happy if I could give a little fraction of what I've got from the paradox community. Here really feels like a family and I told my wife to login with my account and inform the people here when I die. I think that can show how I feel about devout gamers of Paradox.

Lastly, I am sorry about my English vocabulary and/or grammar in advance. It is not my primary language and there may be errors all around.

After all this crap, I should get going to write something about education. First things first, a character's educational outcome depends on 6 influences (was 5):

1) Character stats, including health
2) Father's Educational trait
3) Mother's Educational trait (new)
4) Advisor's Educational trait and stats
5) Buildings in the Realm's Capital
6) Character traits

The educational outcomes are determined by mutually exclusive events. These events are characterised by a MTTH (mean time to happen) figure which is modified by the above influences. Lower MTTH are more likely to happen; higher values are less likely to happen. This summary will mention MTTH modifiers; modifiers <1 make the trait more probable; modifiers >1 make the trait less probable. All numbers here come from CK : DV 15 Oct 2008 beta patch game files.

The preliminary education traits modify stats as follows: (changed)
Code:
(Martial/Diplomatic/Intrigue/Stewardship/Health)
				M / D / I / S / H
Martial Education: 2 / 1 / 1 / 0 / 1
Ecclesiastical Education:	0 / 2 / 1 / 1 / 0
Court Education: 1 / 1 / 1 / 1 / 0
These effects are lost when the intermediate trait is lost; the intermediate trait is replaced with the final trait. Note that only male children can attend martial education. (new)

Martial Education results: (changed)

E4 Mastermind Theologian: 0 / 4 / 5 / 3 / 0

S3 Fortune Builder: 0 / 2 / 1 / 4 / 0
S4 Midas Touched: 0 / 3 / 1 / 6 / 0
1) Character stats, including health.
As a rule of thumb, pre-education stats of <4 are bad, stats >=7 are good. In the tables of modifiers below remember that the stats are modified when you select the type of education. Bad stats are far more significant than good; if you have certain bad stats you should avoid certain educations.

Martial Education: (changed)
Code:
	M1	M2	M3	M4

MTTH	35	30	40	50

M<6	0.80	1	2	5

H<4	0.80	1	0.95	1
H>=7	1.10	0.95	1	0.95
Strangely enough, the most important stat is Martial :). Also important (though a little) is Health; as a rule a person in poor health gets worse results. We can once again mention that females cannot have Martial Education. Between M2 and M3, we can say that nearly all that matters is Martial. For M1 and M4 extremes, all stats get their saying (though not so much as Martial of course. All other stats combined only make around one tenth change in MTTH than Martial alone). Lastly, somehow (most likely a bug) low health makes it more probable to get M3 than high health. (new)

Ecclesiastical Education: (changed)

Intrigue and Stewardship are the skills most important to Ecclesiastical education. Once again while bad stats have severe results, good stats only give you a somewhat better chance of better results. The importance of stats are here less severe than Martial Education. (new)

Court education is more complicated since there are three threads of education: Diplomatic, Intrigue and Stewardship. Here there are twelve possible outcomes, not four.

Weakness in one (or even two) of the three court stats will tend to result in a trait linked with a stronger stat. Unlike M and E educations, a weak stat will not strongly drive poor results (although it will increase the likelyhood of such). While there are small variations, a similar pattern arises in all 3 branches of court education. (new)
  • Good health is always better than bad health though the impact is minor. Health does not impact which branch (D, I or S) the child will go but impacts how good he/she will be on that branch. (new)
  • Martial has no effect to speak of. (new)
  • Every branch is greatly affected by its major stat (D, I or S). Other stats are fairly minor compared to the major stat and have very little effect in middle areas of each branch. The minor stats get their saying when the child is a questionable genius or a questionable retard. (new)
A child who lacks one stat and equally good on other two has nearly same chances (regarding only stats, not advisors parents or traits) of going one branch or another. To put in clearer terms, if one has D:3, I:8, S:8; his chances of being I1/S1 is nearly equal and so are I2/S2, I3/S3 or I4/S4. Though looking at his stats we can say that I3/S3 or I4/S4 are quite more probable than others. One good stat and two bad stats will nearly always guarantee a career on that stat's field. (new)

As a result, martial education is pretty straightforward. If your character has better martial stat than the other stats, and your court is not entirely full of marshals, send him to martial education. Once again note that only males can attend that education. (new)

If the character is heavy on one stat (out of D, I or S) and mediocre/poor on others, court education is the way. When the character has two good stats and one bad, he has more or less equal odds to join one of the good branches for his career. Also, if you are desperately in need of a position on your court, you can direct the children to that branch and hope even if the odds are not that bright. (new)

For ecclesiastical education, I had some second thoughts but some discussion on the boards gave me reasons for it: (new)
  • If a decent spymaster or diplomat is ok and you are not in search for a "grey eminence" or "illusive shadow". This means you are fit with a mediocre character on one of the court seats.
  • To not let your diocese bishop position be empty.
  • Converting your pagan and muslim court members.
  • When you have a balanced character to train and you want a balanced character in the end (maybe raising an all-around king?).
  • To promote bishops.
Also, feedback about this subject from our forums:
Since only males with an ecclesiastical education can become (diocese) bishop, I find them very handy since having those people around is always usefull if you need to get some piety fast.

Bishops are also usefull vassals if your ruler has low intrigue due to some bad traits. A bishopric has no demense limit and will therefor not create subvassals, and the more provinces a bishop has the more likelier it is that he will become Pope and you will get those province back. And hopefully your ruler then has a higher intrigue.

For chancellor, spymaster or steward you can use females, who you can get into your court by marrying them to one of your relatives in your court. The need to 'breed' good chancellors and so on isn't that big.

I usually give my designated heir a court-education, if a son has a high martial rating I give him a martial education and most of the other are given ecclesiastical education. Since I then can make them diocese bishop if I want to, which keeps him in my court and happy (since he won't complain of wanting a title or other position in that case).
(after my question about why galuska sends all males to ecclesiastical education)
Well, no, but they are good for all roles, and bishop and the marshall are the only ones you can't marry, so why not?
It is worth noting that low intrigue or stewardship can cause your character to perform badly on ecclesiastical education. So, if your character has low martial (martial school eliminated) and low intrigue and/or stewardship (ecclesiastical school eliminated) the only odds are sending him to court education and hope for the best. Of course all points until here are made only regarding stats and nothing else (parental traits, character traits, advisor traits and buildings in capital). (new)
One last point is that, do not forget preliminary changes (at the start of education at age 5) in stats count when determining what will happen when the education ends (at age 16) so take that into account, too. (new)

2 and 3) Parental Educational traits.
Both father's and mother's traits affect the child the same way and with the same ratios. One thing worth noting is that mothers naturally cannot have martial traits (M1 through M4) so that they only come from the fathers. All other traits (E1 through E4, D1 through D4, I1 through I4, S1 through S4) of both parents affect the child. (new)
Within the same field the MTTH modifier is 0.90 plus 0.05 per difference in level. For example a M2 father produces MTTH modifiers of: 0.95 for M1, 0.90 for M2, 0.95 for M3 and 1.00 for M4 or a E4 mother produces MTTH modifiers of: 1.05 for E1, 1.00 for E2, 0.95 for E3 and 0.90 for E4.

Outside their fields parents only affect their children if they are the best or the worst of their branch. This means all parents belonging to second or third tier of their branch (let's say X2, X3 for easier notation) only affect their child in the area of their expertise (be it E, M, D, I or S). Parents belonging to first or last tier of their branch (X1, X4) not only affect their child in their area of expertise but also other branches. The main difference here is, when the parent is X1 or X4, their effect on other branches only affect the extreme ends i.e. Y1 or Y4. To say in easier words, genius or retard parents do not affect their children if the child is going to another area of expertise and being a mediocre one. On the other hand, genius or retard parents affect their children that go to another area of expertise if they are going to be geniuses or retards themselves. (new)
To put those in a chart: (new)
Code:
Child:	X1:	X2:	X3:	X4:

Parent:
X1:	0.90	0.95	1.00	1.05
X2:	0.95	0.90	0.95	1.00
X3:	1.00	0.95	0.90	0.95
X4:	1.05	1.00	0.95	0.90
Y1:	0.95	1.00	1.00	1.05
Y4:	1.05	1.00	1.00	0.95

In this table, X denotes any area of expertise (E, M, D, I or S) and Y any other.
There are 2 little bugs in the event files about parenal expertise trait inheritance: (new)
  • For female characters, the proven accountant trait (S2) only takes into account the traits of their fathers.
  • For female characters, the midas touched trait (S4) does not take into account if their mother is a midas touched or an amateurish pettifogger (S4 and D1 accordingly)
A short story about parental effects on education would be: (new)
  • Parents with good educational traits tend to effect the kid in the right way.
  • Children with retard parents are just so unlucky :).

4) Advisor means the courtier of yours in the position relevant to the child's education. Martial advisor is marshal, intrigue advisor is spymaster, diplomacy advisor is chancellor, steward advisor is steward and ecclesiastical advisor is diocese bishop (not sure about the last since the event files name him "chaplain_csc"; nevertheless diocese bishop is the best shot). (new)
If an advisor's diplomatic skill is not >=7, then the advisor has no effect. The advisor only affects the acquisition of the skills relevant to their position. This may be good or bad. Good if both your advisor's relevant skill and diplomacy are good, good if both your advisor's relevant skill and diplomacy sucks (since he will not make the child suck either), bad if one is bad and the other is good. (new)
Code:
Advisor's relevant skill:	Good: Bad:

Advisor's diplomacy:
Good: [COLOR="SeaGreen"]Good example[/COLOR] [COLOR="Red"]Will make the kid suck[/COLOR]
			[COLOR="seagreen"]to the kid[/COLOR]

Bad: Good skill will not	At least he won't be
pass to child able to make the kid an
						idiot like himself

Green means will affect the kid good. Red means affect the kid bad.
Normal text means no change will happen to the kid.

If the advisior has an educational trait relevant to their position, the effect is that the MTTH modifier 0.9 plus 0.05 for each difference of levels (A marshal with M4 and dip=7 would give a MTTH modifier of 0.9 for M4, 0.95 for M3, 1.00 for M2 and 1.05 for M1). This part is just like the upper half of the parental trait table. Also, if the advisor's relevant position stat is >=10 then the MTTH modifiers are 1.15 for X1, 0.95 for X2, and 0.9 for X3 and X4. There is no position stat for the Diocese Bishop. (new)
Code:
Child: X1:	X2:	X3:	X4:

Advisor (provided diplomacy >=7):
X1: 0.90	0.95	1.00	1.05
X2: 0.95	0.90	0.95	1.00
X3: 1.00	0.95	0.90	0.95
X4: 1.05	1.00	0.95	0.90
RelevantStat>=10:	1.15	0.95	0.90	0.90

In this table, X denotes any area of expertise (E, M, D, I or S).
RelevantStat line has no effect for diocese bishops
Another new factor about advisors is that, when the subject character is "friends" with the advisors, different factors add up. (new)

First thing is, if the character attending court education is friends with any of the courtiers relevant to his options (chancellor, spymaster, steward), the MTTH of going down that road is multiplied by 0.85. That means, for example, if the student with low D but high both I and S is friends with the spymaster, he will probably choose the intrigue way over the steward way. (new)

Second thing about friendship with advisors is that, if you are friends with any active courtier (chancellor, spymaster, steward, marshal, diocese bishop) and that courtier has a trait relevant to your education (martial, ecclesiastical or court), the MTTH of that trait is multiplied by 0.8. That means combined with the fact that negative stats are far more effective than positive stats, if you have an idiot in your court and the student is friends with him, the courtier will drag the student down. This effect working upwards is harder. What I mean is, the retard student being friends with a genius courtier will have nearly no effect. A good student being friends with a genius courtier will help considerably. A retard student being friends with a not-so-retard courtier will help considerably too. (new)

The main points here are: (new)
  • A bad active courtier as a friend will probably drag the student down.
  • A good active courtier as a friend is most helpful if he is a little better then the potential of the student. Average friendly courtiers to stupid students will give better results than genius friendly courtiers to stupid students.
  • When the student is in court education, whom he befriends may define his path (D, I or S).
  • Good courtier (good with his traits and/or good with his relevant stat) will always help the student no matter if there is a friendship bond or not.

5)Buildings in capital of the realm:

0.95 MTTH modifier per building. For example, M234 means this modifier is for M2,M3,M4. Here comes the table:
Code:
Armory M234
Train. Grounds	M234	E2
War Acadamy	M234
Large Castle	M234 D234	I34	S4

Notice that training grounds tempt priests away from further studies. That can be rephrased as training grounds increase the odds of your priests becoming martial clerics. That is not such bad in my opinion. In the end, with the right stats, a bright kid will become E3 or E4 no matter if you have training grounds or not. (new)

What this chart means to me is, buildings about martial education tend to keep the kid away from becoming a misguided warrior. On the other hand, buildings that affect ecclesiastical education tend to keep the kid away from becoming a detached priest and (except training grounds) push the kid to becoming a scholarly theologian. Same can be said about intrigue and stewardship, and while diplomacy buildings are not so hard on pushing the kid to D3, they push a little harder to D4 than the others that push to their consecutive fourth tiers. (new)

One last table about traits is about bastards. Apart from the bastard trait taking place in some of the tables above, there is always a seperate block of modifiers about bastards for all tiers of all professions: (new)

Easy things first before talking about all traits, if you have got yourself a bastard who is vengeful or suspicious (especially vengeful), he is a primary candidate for being an illusive shadow (I4) if sent to court education. There is no other bonus like the bonus of a vengeful bastard for I4. A second option can be martial education for vengeful bastards. Not as sharp as the bonus of intrigue, there is still a very big bonus. On the other hand, although being a bastard is not penalized in any way for martial education, being vengeful is penalised somewhat. (new)

Ecclesiastical education may seem a good path for honest but not vengeful bastards but it is not. Being a bastard is penalized really heavily for ecclesiastical education and this honest-and-not-vengeful bonus for bastards does not compensate it. Long story short, ignoring small bonuses and maluses, if not stat-wise unsuitable (intrigue<4), a vengeful bastard should go to court education since he is the best candidate for I4. (new)

Now I will try to analyse general traits. Bear in mind that I am ignoring the changes of stats by traits. Analysis of stats was made in the beginning of the guide and here will be only analysis of traits' effects on educational character development. (new)

This list has two purposes - one is to guide the selection of a education track at the age of five; the other is to guide event choices for children up until their education completes. Some of the traits are poor choices before education, but may be less problematic later. (Lustful, for example. While it negatively affects education, it does give a nice +2 fertility and +1 intrigue ... and likely some bastards.)
