KW RETIRES
texas_flag_small.jpg
Listen up, y'all. After God knows how many months working tirelessly to bring you your battle results, our Texan Battle Mod KingWittelsbach has finally had to hang up his dice, saddle up and ride on out into the sunset.

To date, we have not had a staff member who has worked for so long on the battles and so we all owe KW a priceless debt of gratitude.

Come back to us whether it has to be sooner or later, pardner. :)

- SUPPORT MODS! -
BzAli, Ladislav, Rebelodicus, and Tracid are now full game moderators!

The admins have very kindly agreed to my request to them to bestow mod powers on these guys in honour of their long service to the Game.

Whilst regular complaints about game-issues should still be sent to me (protocol mod is one of my jobs on the forum) Bz, Ladislav, Reb and Trac now have the powers to deal with issues that get dangerously out of hand quickly, as has happened once or twice before. Not to mention the fact that mod powers will doubtless help them in their respective tasks on the forum.

This gives me a great opportunity to announce that Tracid will be joining our ranks as our new Battle Mod. With BusterBunny's awesome new battles program at his disposal, we should be able to recommence battle resolutions for the turn ending Friday, the 8th of August. No promises, though - do keep an eye on this thread, I'll let you know when the stasis event is being officially lifted.

- PLAGUE’S END -

plague.gif
Apart from the bubonic and pneumonic plague, a further disease swept through Europe. It had many names and was known as The Sweat, The Swat, New Acquaintance, Stoupe, or Knave know thy master. It was claimed that it only killed the rich, middle aged - not the young or the old, and that it caused a quick death : "They were dancing in court at nine and dead at eleven", wrote a Poole minister, while Dr Caius, a later physician, compared it to "the Plague at Athens, a pestilent contagious fever of one natural day". Dr Caius recorded the signs and symptoms as "... burning heat, sickness, headache, delirium, intense thirst, laboured breathing, erratic pulse, followed by faintness, drowsiness, profuse sweating, sickness of stomach and heart but seldom vomiting". He added "... the symptoms reached their height by the seventh hour after onset, by the ninth delirium set in, and that death often quickly followed... However, if the victim survived the fifteenth hour the symptoms abated, and if they passed the twenty-fourth hour, they usually survived."

Eventually the plague did disappear, but it left Europe with great cultural changes. In art, the changes were extreme. During the pre-plague times noble lords were shown in full health, in their best clothes and armour, holding their swords. Afterwards, half-decomposed bodies with parts of skeleton clearly visible were shown. The clothes draping the body were old dirty rags, and some sculptures showed worms and snails burrowing in the rotten flesh. Suffering became a favourite theme.

Although many perished because of the plague, life did go on. Those left behind mourned for the great losses they had been affected by.

Battle resolutions will recommence for the turn ending midnight, Sat/Sun 9th/10th CET. Send your battle orders to battleorders@gmx.at.
Realms at total peace will resume regenerating econ points in after that. Not before.
Declarations of war may be issued from the time this post has been made.

- COMPLAINTS -
I've mentioned it once or twice on the forum already, but we've had problems with players posting their grievances either with the moderators or other their fellow players, on the forum.

This is a problem for us, because not only does it create bad feeling between the players, it's not a very good advert for the game. Do you see how that's not a good thing for any of us?

The Off-Topic thread, which has been the medium for most of it, has been closed more than once because of the in-fighting that's gone on in there, and more times than I can remember I've asked players to restrict their complaints to PMs sent either to the person whose actions they have an issue with, or to me.

It's time to clear this problem out of town and so from now on, players who post complaints or ill-tempered criticism on the forum will be warned first, then be moved onto the standard series of morale hits, starting at -1 morale for 1 game year.

An adapted form of this announcement will be added to the Dos and Don'ts section of the RULES thread.

Thanks for reading,

JG :)

- RPG Treaties Manager -
Experienced player required.

uncle-sam.jpg

YOUR FORUM NEEDS YOU
The Treaties Manager department is less demanding than the main pillars of the game, ie: Events, Battles and Stats, so it's ideal for someone who fancies… well, keeping the treaties sorted, really. You can work out whether or not you’re suited.

You will need:

  • First and foremost, a passionate belief in the need to preserve and further the roleplaying spirit of the game.
  • ...to be a regular, experienced player of the RPG. Posters from other areas of the Europa Universalis board need not apply.
  • A good command of English and basic grammar.
  • An interest in the history of this period (1419+), Again, you don't have to have 10 university degrees in history, but a healthy interest and feel for the historical vibe of the game is needed.
  • A working knowledge of the vB text-formatting tags. You do need to be good at this, actually. The more comfortable and competent you are with the vB system, the more you can do to make the treaties posts clear and legible.
  • A reasonable amount of free time once all your in-character commitments are taken care of. Again, this is not a vastly demanding duty.
In return, you get:

  • To keep hold of your nation.
  • The custom title of ‘EU:M RPG Treaties Manager
  • R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
Please get your applications and email address to josefgiven@hotmail.com

Have you got what it takes?

BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE, BE THE RPG TREATIES MANAGER.

- That was quick! -
Blink, and you'd have missed it: there's no point delaying any further, your new Treaties Manager will be that Berber corsair himself, our very own chris8b! Yay! :)

Congrats and thanks, Chris, and may your treaty-twiddling bring you good fortune!

Thanks also must go to those who applied for the job as well. Good to know so many hands are interested in helping out.

- HRE MARTIAL BULLE + RoP -
Following talks with your most esteemed Treaties-Juggler extraordinairre behind the scenes, it turns out there's some confusion about where the HRE Martial Bull, and the game mechanical effects it has, start and end.

First things first - ultimately, it's just another treaty. Like all the rest, it has no direct game mechanical effects. I've included the snippet that's caused the problems at the bottom for your reading pleasure.

Never mind what the snags were, here are the solutions we're implementing to them that you need to know about. You have until the turn deadline - Sat/Sun 14th/15th of September - to get any concerns you have about them to me via PM and not on the forum. After that, it's too late, at least for this turn and until a future review.

Here we go, this is the important bit:

* As of now, it is assumed that all Imperial realms - the ones in BRONZE on the map below - NPC or played, grant all other Imperial realms Right of Passage and wish to continue doing so.

Any Imperial player has the right to deny any other Imperial realm, NPC or PC, Right of Passage at any time. I recommend players who wish to exclude certain realms do so NOW!! before the end of the turn.

  • HRE.txt

    HRE Map
* The HREmperor may not grant RoP through any Imperial realm other than his own to another realm.

* As per RPG policy, when an NPC Imperial realm becomes played again, all its former RoP agreements, as well as all its other game-mechanical agreements are made null and void by default. This means that realm's player will need to sign the Martial Bull again by posting confirmation in the Nat Stats thread. How they are convinced to do so is up to the HREmperor and his government.

* The HREmperor has no game-mechanical powers to enforce the Bull and neither will the game's system do so directly. However, the HREmperor's power and influence may be backed up via the events system, should players defy the Emperor's will. It is recommended to HRE players that they follow the Emperor's wishes in order for a peaceful, long-lived game.

Part Five of the Martial Bulle. The rest can be found on this page.
Quinta - The Princes of the Empire guarantee free passage for all troops of all loyal Imperial Princes through their lands. This right of universal passage may be removed from a Imperial Prince upon his rebellion against the Empire, or as part of a temporary punishment.

- Last Minute DoWs -

Here's one I could use your help on; please reply in the Paradox Lounge OOC thread. I'm trying to think of the best way to prevent last minute declarations of war. You know, that's when a player declares war on a foe within hours or minutes of the turn deadline, so that foe won't have time to send orders or spend econ points mobilising.

These are the three ideas I've got so far. Please discuss them and point out the stengths and weaknesses you can see in each. Especially weaknesses.

  1. A deadline is introduced so that DoWs have to be issued before Wednesdays or Thursdays - whatever gives the rest of the players the most reasonable time to respond.

Possible issues I've foreseen: Players may still issue DoWs right up until this deadline, so that their opponent's allies don't have time to counter DoW.
  2. Morale hits issued on realms who issue DoWs close to the turn deadline. Say -1 morale for the duration they're at war for DoWs issued on Fridays, and -2 morale for those on Saturdays.

Possible issues I've foreseen: Players may still issue DoWs right up until these thresholds, too, for the previous reasons. It does offer other realms the chance to get involved albeit at cost, though.
  3. Moderator Interpretation. Either myself or Tracid (or both) have the capacity to judge whether a player is issuing a 'last minute DoW' in an unsporting fashion and deny it for one turn. This would mean the DoW was still relevant, but only for the following turns' orders.

Possible issues I've foreseen: Players involved wouldn't like it! Nor the implied allegation that they had been cheating.
Naturally, if you can think of better ideas, let's have 'em! :)

Moderator Note
This is NOT an opportunity to vent your grievances about other players' DoWs. Anyone found doing so will be dealt with accordingly. Use this opportunity to improve the game, not sling mud.

Thanks for reading,

JG :)

- DoW Solution -

OK, folks, without further ado, here's how we'll be handling Declarations of War (DoWs).

  1. DoW deadline
Declarations of War must be made before the deadline of midnight Wednesday/Thursday, according to forum clock time, if they are to be valid for the end of turn: the Sat/Sun midnight after.
  2. Late DoWs
Declarations of war may still be issued after the new DoW deadline, but at the automatic cost of -2 morale for 1 game year to those realms.
  3. Exceptions
josefgiven may choose to either lessen, or completely negate the automatic late-DoW penalty, above, if it is deemed fit. The penalty is more likely to be lessened if you are declaring war in order to honour an alliance or similar agreement or obligation.

Make sure to make a note of your reasons, if you are at risk of receiving the penalty for issuing a late DoW.

I will not be held responsible if you issue your DoW just before the Sat/Sun turn deadline and fail to have the legitimacy of the DoW checked out before the end of the turn! Neither will exemptions from the Late DoW penalty be given once the turn has ended.

This clarification comes into effect immediately!!

EDITORIAL
aka: me running my fat mouth

Thanks to Martinus, who clearly has been laying off the booze and still has the right sort of brain for this sort of thing. The above idea must be credited to him. Mart, you'll find you already have a mention in the 'Credits' section of the RULES thread, so I won't need to make any changes there. :D

Thanks must also go to the rest of you for stumping up some great and well-thought out ideas and reasoning, and in such a healthy and reasonable manner too, in the game's OOC thread. Your efforts were part of an invaluable process of elimination, even if many of the ideas weren't used, in essence.

Yes, it’s a pain in the ass to have to introduce yet more complications to the game, but this one, as you know, has been desperately needed for a very long time. For simplicity’s sake it will be presented in the RULES thread as a shortened down version running along the lines of: ‘you must get your DoWs in before the Weds/Thurs deadline, but if you want to get them in later, then click here’ …and you’ll be taken to another page with all the gory details on it. A bit like the Arrests Rules Clarification, in the Vault.

- EVENTS -

As you know by now, Ladislav is temporarily leaving the RPG's events department to work as a beta-tester on Crusader Kings. Good luck to him. :)

I will be doing events for the immediate future until either Ladislav returns, or I find I can't manage them on top of everything else and have to put up an advert in here so I can find a temporary stand-in.

Get your events requests to medievalevents@yahoo.co.uk from now on. Only a few a week will be chosen to be processed - your event idea has a better chance of beating its competitors and being processed if it is well-thought out and presented. Those which are not will have to wait and may even be ignored outright. I will also be working on a first-in, first-out basis, so older requests get precedence over new ones.

EDIT: Send along a fully roleplayed short story as well, which I can use both as a flavour text and to help me understand better what you are trying to do with the event.

Some of you have sent event requests to Ladislav that have yet to be processed. I am too busy to chase these up and so you will need to send them again to the address above.

DO NOT send event requests to my PM in-box! I need it kept empty to resolve other game issues, so event requests sent to me via PM will be treated as spam and deleted without explanation.

Again, the only media where I will be accepting events requests is:

JG :)

Remember to register

Some of the new players have not registrered in the Nat.Stats and informed me of the nation they're playing, and the name of their HoS.

I cannot monitor this myself, as it would increase my workload enourmously. And as long as played nations appear as NPC, iot becomes pretty hard for newcomers to pick a nation when joining.

So far, no punishment have been handed out, but I am seriously consedering asking JG to do so, if I detect active players who have not yet registrered.

Thank you for your attention, and my apologizes to those not affected.

This week's (at the time of posting) battle-orders deadline will be midnight Friday 14th Oct. night/Saturday 15th Oct. morning, as opposed to the usual deadline of midnight Sat/Sun. Exceptions will not be made if you fail to read this announcement in time.

The late DoWs deadline will NOT be changed this week.

Direct links and short summary would be most welcome.

Three players alredy did that and I think this would help me very much.

Thank for your attention

- BYE!! -
Righty-ho, folks, the time has come for me to hang up my mod cape and emerge blinking into the real world. The 'net has been a laugh but enough is enough.

It's been a great pleasure to work on this game and with some truly fine people, which is why I'd like to think it will carry on from strength to strength once I'm gone. That is why you WILL respect and obey your new chief mod, BzAli at all times and without question.

So that is that. Much love to you all (you know who you are) and I might stick my head round the door every now and then when I'm round at Reb's or something. Until then!

Steve Downing :)

YOUR FORUM NEEDS YOU

Folks,
As you've proparbly guessed, I'll be unable to survive the workload of filling two important slots within this game. I'm thus forced to withdraw from my beloved position as Nat.Stats.-mod, devoting (and dividing) my time to being über-mod and to have Bremen grow and prosper. :)
I am therefore searching for an experienced player to fill the soon-to-be vacant position as Nat.Stats.-moderator.

You will need:

  • First and foremost, a passionate belief in the need to preserve and further the roleplaying spirit of the game.
  • ...to be a regular, experienced player of the RPG. Posters from other areas of the Europa Universalis board need not apply.
  • A good command of English and basic grammar.
  • The ability to get the job done, when it needs doing. Sometimes you'll just want to let things float for a couple of days, and that's not good enough. The job requires dedication!
  • A working knowledge of the vB text-formatting tags. Not newspaper or magazine design level, but enough to keep the Nat.Stats look appealing to the eye and functional.

In return, you get:

  • To keep hold of your nation.
  • A cool custom title of your choice.
  • A sense of satisfaction in knowing you are part of the process which keeps the game running.
  • R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
Please get your applications and email address to me by PM.

Have you got what it takes?

BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE, BE THE NAT.STATS. MANAGER!.

I'll continue to handle the Stats. untill a new mod have been found. Come on guys, make me proud.

Notice to all players

I appreciate that this need not be said to most of you but I will go through the procedure all the same.

BzAli has ALL the support of Myself, Ladislav, Tracid and all the other assistants that do a fine job in this RPG.

Until any official post that says otherwise all the old rules and habits apply.

Any complaints are to go to any MOD you feel is impartial or an Admin, and any posts that resemble spam or are placed in the wrong place will trigger a moral hit. ... You know the rest ;)

Thank you for you patience and co-operation

New National Statistics moderator

First of all: I'm impressed and thankfull.
A great number of the veteran players volunteered to fill my shoes as Nat.Stats-manager, and that means a lot to me.
Not only does in imply that you have acecpted me as new über-mod, one thing I never doubted, but it also shows that the will to keep this game alive is here!

All the applicants, you know who you are, were worthy, but I had to choose one.
So please, lady (we only have on aboard, right :)) and gentlemen, let me hear a round of applause for the new Nat.Stats.-meister:

AugCaesar

Welcome aboard, AC.
As soon as AC gets online again, he'll post the new Nat.Stats-thread. When that happens, I'll close the old, and let it slowly sink to it's welldeserved resting place. chris8b will then move the treaties and such to the new thread.
If AC should open his thread while I am not here to close the old, kindly take all your stat-posting there, even though the old is still open.
Thank you.
BzAli, über-mod :)

I have checked through the RP-permissions in GQ and Inscriptions, and there's some really old ones in there.

I plan to clean it out, and I therefore ask you to take a look at the permissions.
If you have any permissions in there which you'd like to keep, PM me, and I'll let them survive the cleaning. Otherwise, I'll use my jugdement, and erase those that are obviously no longer of any use.

NPC Substitute player
the_cloaked_figureT.jpg

They are out there, waiting in silence, shrouded in shadows.

We all hope they shall never be needed, but from time to time, duty call on them, and they step forward, ready to fill the vacant position left by others, lesser, players, if only for a short time.

Theirs are the sad duties to sign treaties of defeat, to surrender land and titles, to formally apology.

They are the RPG substitute players.

Two veteran players have contacted me pr. PM, independent of each other, to volunteer for this position. I have accepted them both, not because they are often needed, but to avoid conflicts of interest between their regular realms and the nations they shall shephard for a short period of time.

One has allready started on his new duty, Specter will bring Holstein to peace.
Doppleganger will continue as substitue player, currently bringing Byzantium to peace.
Phantasm, the last substitute player, will take care of Latvia.

-But wait, there's more official business-

Chris8b have had some unfortunate events in his real life, which have, of course, taken precedence over his duty as Treaty Manager.
His work has been flawless, and it is not out of disrespect for it that I now announces his position open. But we need a new man to fill this position.
You can work out whether or not you’re suited.
