If there's one thing I've allways enjoyed about Pdx-Games, it was the ability (at least on steam) to roll back to an older game version if disagreed with any balancing changes made in a major patch. Now obviously HBS isn't Pdx, but I think it might be something to consider and shouldn't add to much work while providing those who might otherwise spend their time preaching inherent doom with a way to continue to play the game they love in the state they love.

It's also modfriendly, without being direct support. :p
