Does every tank derivative (SP-AT, SP-AA and SP-ART) use the stats derived from its base type, or can they have more modern guns if researched later on?

Say I'm playing Italy, and I invest some early research into the 1930's light tanks but leave it at that. Later on I've researched lots of anti-tank tech, and want self-propelled anti-tank guns for cheap, so I research the SP-AT model for an early light tank. Will this model have the poor 1930's stats despite my current tech with AT guns?

Anti tank techs will not improve tank destroyers.

Well that's disappointing. I think IRL many tank destroyers were created by strapping a loose AT-gun on an otherwise obsolete chassis, weren't they? Thanks for the answer anyway.

well, it could be that the upgrades you can research for at-guns might also influence tank destroyers, but dont quote me on that. Atleast it is an feasable possibility, since tank destroyes are essentially just tank chassis, with the turret removed and an at-gun strapped on or built into the chassis.

You can create a variant with an improved gun, but that is dependent on combat experience, not technology.

It's possible that creating the TD variant will give it better piercing and hard attack, while SPG variant has higher soft attack, and SPAAG have higher anti-air. Otherwise I don't know how they would have those variants serving any purpose

That's not quite what I was referring to... Once you research the TD (or SPA, or SPAA), you can use the variant system to upgrade the gun, armor, engine, and relaibility, just like you can on the original tank chassis.

The developers don't want to make the artillery tech tree effect so many things that they become must have. Anti air techs will not make your ships aa guns any better, the artillery techs will not make ships guns any better, rocket techs will not help aircrafts and anti tank guns will not improve tank destroyers.

We need this! I believe Bryartuck is right about the game mechanics, but that doesn't make it right. If you have a kick ass AT gun, you should be able to strap it to a crappy light tank chassis.

The Big AT guns don't fit well on smal chassis.
So i think it is a bad idea.

i don't suppose you've heard of the ZiS-30 then?

there were many times even grossly obsolete hulls were reused with some kind of quirky design in mind.

even with germany, one of their first dedicated tank destroyers- the Panzerjäger I was a panzer I chassis with a czech 47mm PAK(t) anti-tank gun.

even modern tank variant had their bodies repurposed for some odd and terrifying use. meet the Dicker Max: with its 105mm cannon. it's basically a late-model king tiger without the armor.

i really hope PDS does right in portraying variants.

TDs and tanks with severely oversized guns sacrificed safety (AKA reliability ingame) for extreme offense.

SPAAs sacrificed hard attack for solid AA ability (see Ostwind, Wirbelwind)

faster variants like the KV-1S sacrificed a bit of armor plating for greater mobility (though just as often it was more simply just an upgrade to the engine- see Tiger II sla.16

and up-armored variants like any soviet tank with an E at the end had more armor at the cost of less speed.

and these variants strengths and weaknesses were NOT made equally.
