Give me a big cigar - I get it!

Each of the research teams on the left is pursuing a series of categories of research (the little blue-square icons) [see NOTE below] and they will contribute X amount of progress in these fields regularly. In addition, each of these teams can "focus" on a specific short-term project (ergo the "replace" button and the available techs menu to the right). Probably when a team is "focused", it contributes less (or none) to its basic blue-square fields (ergo the "no project assigned" notification, which shows that all efforts of this team are directed towards "general" [blue-square] fields).

Now if you look at the blue-square icons and associate them with their companies, it makes sense.

Can I be the first to say that this is a GREAT compromise solution between Vicky's horrible tech tree and HOI's wonderful-but-complex system? Nice!

NOTE: whether the categories of research available to each team are hardcoded or not is open to question. I would suspect they are, since this would tend to create nation-specific militaries, which has been hinted as a feature of HOI2. However, you can moderate the historical paths of each nation's militaries by heavily managing the special projects of each team.

ALSO: I suspect that when a team is assigned a special project within its blue-square icon areas of expertise, that special project will come much faster than if it is assigned a project outside of its expertise.

THIS IS AWESOME! :) :) :)

That seems like a reasonable conclusion to draw, based on the available evidence.

If it something similar to what you describe, I'd like that a lot. It's a nice compromise between people who want to spend a lot of time tech tree managing and those who want to let that take care of itself (like me).

It sounds kind of like how MOO3 handled tech (which was one of the few things that MOO3 did well, IMO).

They would never hardcode a tech tree - too difficult to change.
They know that people will want to mod - and that that is a selling feature - so they will stay as flexable as possible. :)

I think by "hardcoded" he means "unable to change within the game" rather than "unable to mod".

IOW, you wouldn't be able to switch "Dewoitine" from researching air techs to researching naval techs without going into the files and modding them.

Yes, exactly.
