Im messing around playing Nat China, havent done so in ages. Figure ill join the Allies this game. Raise threat on Japan and Shanxi from day one, does no good, no where near being able to conquer the nation before Marco Polo. Early 1937 i realize that my plan has gone to hell, start building more units.... My army for now is MILx3. I have 3 HQ's with 50 Divisions each (Shanxi/Comm China, Guangxi/Yunnan & Tibet/Xibei San Ma). I produce 25 divisions on that little strip of border with Japan up near Shanxi, and then i place 2 divisions in each port (so far the Guandong event hasnt fired)...NOt a peep out of Japan, Jul 1st came and went. Shanxi is on my border, so their border must be open for Japan. I guess my numbers scared them away... :blush:

They eventually fired it, shortly after the Guandong event fired. My new divisions werent in org, nor had i mobilized so it was gonna be ugly...Going to try again another time when im not so sleepy!

So AI isn't as dumb as expected, what a scandal :p

As it has been discussed numerous times, there is a strength calculation AI that is keeping it from taking decisions and firing events that are likely to be suicidal.

Yeah but what exactly do the consider? How many brigades? Types? or composition? I think its brigades. But then why attack me when the Guandong event fired, didnt seem like they moved more units in the area...and why not hit Shanxi, im sure their borders were empty, they were on mine.

Usually China a a guarantee on CSX that the AI will probably include in its calculations.
And I do not know the formula, but I guess brigades count might very well be an important value in this.

Im pretty sure the game uses brigades. Because many times players leave crappy units in ports and the Ai doesnt invade...

I've heard that the AI dislikes to attack inf with arty attatched. So I dunno.

The AI dislikes amphibious invasions in general. It is too easy to deter AI invasions, and to my limited experience most of the time the quality of the port garrison force doesn't make a big difference any more. AI needs a very good reason to conduct a naval invasion, otherwise it is very very careful with invasions. But if they once chose to attack a place, they sometimes even try when they obviously can't win.

As the USA i had 10 Coastal Forts and i believe 3x (INFx3/ARTx1) on my isles (no air cover really though) and watched the Japanese send countless amphibs to their doom....one after another after another...

I guess it doesn't take much...current game 10 x (INFx3/ARTx1) on border with Japan (after annexing Shanxi) has kept Japan from firing Marco Polo (i have no units in any of my ports!).

As I am reading several of your posts lately, I thought you joined the allies. Or is this another game?

Because if CHI is a member of the Allies, Marco Polo is not available to Japan.

No surprise there. In 1936, China was closer to Germany than Japan. And I do not mean that geographically :)

Oh i know the history..my point is in game i never noticed myself not moving towards where i was aligning too before unless i was being counter influenced. I expected to be moving towards the allies, even in small increments. Weird though in these few test games, Nat China starts moving towards the Allies as i conquer Chinese nations, and yet nothing changes on the Axis side. For example, start the game, align to the allies and watch myself float towards the Axis. Annex Shanxi and then watch myself float towards the Allies.... now why should that be? I would think it would have the opposite effect.

that IS weird. I agree. I have seen China float towards the Allies on their own after Marco Polo, even when I was specifically NOT inviting Japan. I have no explanation.

New game, something else that is interesting. By the info above it appears that being in the Axis (Nat China) doesn't preclude Japan from firing Marco Polo. Current game i had 7 divisions (INFx3/ARTx1) on the border and Japan didn't fire it. Also my ports were empty.
