I had not been playing for a couple of years and came back with the summer sale, picked up a few DLCs (did NOT pick up Lev. but just about everything else).

Started making some runs as Portugal. Running into some issues I checked out a couple of streamers and noted that as late as April and May of this year, people were talking about the flagship's Portuguese Navigator +100% range.

Cool, that sounds like a good s'ploit-ish bandwagon to hop on... but... that option does not exist in my game for the portuguese flagship!

In my game, Portuguese Navigators get a 20% fleet attrition reduction (which either doesn't work or is so weak, it might as well not). Can anyone tell me was this finally nerfed into the ground (as that is what it seems like) because of the unrealistic exploration results the previous bonus yielded, or is there some weird additional DLC requirement or bug since no one appears to be talking about it ? The secondary question is, if this did get nerf-herded, when or where since I find no patch notes or other official indications anywhere? Thanks! ~Al

I'm with YellowPress on this one. Sure you've got no mods affecting it?

I loaded up two fresh Portugal runs, one with and one without Leviathon enabled, and both have Portuguese Navigator as +100 Exploration Range (NOT +100% as OP put).

F me... Short of uninstalling the whole mess, I am at my wit's end trying to figure out what it is. Over on Reddit and elsewhere (forgot here, sorry!) I have indicated already verified cache, double checked I have no mods (I don't think I have ever used any mods with EU4 since launch), double checkeed with the light ship checked (which was how I first noticed it since those are faster in the first place), and half a dozen other sorts of enabling disabling... I had not, nor do I ever, shift through various bookmarks either musingly or with a will to do mischief.... My working hypothesis was a quiet nerfing that went either unfinished, was broken, or meant to meme since it is so bad it appears at times to work in reverse...

Anyway, thanks for the reply since sometimes when posing this question it has felt like I am commenting in a vaccuum! :) ~Al

PS. I should also probably mention I am doing these with Ironman enabled, no idea if it is that... I will post back if a vanilla run makes the diff... (no, it can't be that.. can it...? )

PPS: should also have mentioned Title page shows v1.33.3.0 France (5010) hoping that is at least the right v. number...

Well, if you don't mind possibly breaking Ironman, go into the Common file in the directory, find flagship_modifications folder and either delete it or the text file inside it, then verify integrity. If that doesn't do it, it's just you, not a 'nerf', it's not anything Paradox did. It's showing +100 navigation range for me too, and just did what I've described here. The only Flagship upgrade that should affect attrition is the Spanish Grand Armada upgrade, which reduces it by -30%.

The only thing I can think of is DLC requirement. I just loaded up a fresh Ironman save as Portugal and started building a flagship - Exploration Range +100, as it should be. Your checksum is correct too.

Thank you for your replies folks.

Well I just tried a non ironman so I can rule that out. And I couldn't give a fig for breaking Ironman... since my other option is uninstalling the whole damned mess -

-on the other hand -

Given the comments by Darsara above, this is an oddly specific and weird sort of substitution.... where would such a label and percentage come from then? Perhaps it is only the tip of the iceberg for a whole raft of screwy things in this iteration of the game that only I seem to have despite its repeatedly verifying cache files - and I might not even realize what other things are simply completely wrong? [sound of hair tearing in the background]

I shall shortly invest in a wig factory. Off now to try fiddling with the files to see if I can see what is in there since that might be intersting, and maybe to uninstall the whole hot steaming mess. I knew I shouldn't have gotten back into this.

Thanks again for any and all comments/ suggestions (go do myself, I apparently have already done, though, thanks! LOL) :)

(here is a pic of the non Ironman light ship version for reference)

So PostScript 1: the Flagship Modifications file shows :
portuguese_navigators = {
trigger = {
OR = {
tag = POR
tag = BRZ
}
normal_or_historical_nations = yes
}
modifier = {
exploration_mission_range_in_fleet_modifier = 100
naval_maintenance_flagship_modifier = 0.5
}
ai_trade_score = {
factor = 1
modifier = {
factor = 10
tag = POR
}
}
ai_war_score = {
factor = 0
}
}

My coding isn't great but... that seems like what everyone else BUT me sees when they make their choices as Portugal. As you mentioned, Dasara, I can find no other instance of fleet attrition reduction but a .3 Spanish option. The only odd thing about the file is that Portuguese Fusiliers are oddly placed seperate from the other Port. options (Spanish options being between Fusiliers and the rest of the Port. specific choices).

Reloading the file on verification loads up an - apparently - identical looking file.

PostScript 2:
(sigh)
Next stop is complete removal and reinstallation. I will PS 3 after that.

POSTSCRIPT 3: Uninstall EU4, update Steam, close it, computer reboot, fresh reinstall and VC: no effect. This and no mods leads me to believe there is something in a preference file somewhere, or some secret sort of background file that if you don't have the right combination of DLCs (or the WRONG sort of combination) you get what I have. Since the rest of the DLC (G Cent.) including all the other modifications work, and even the file with the proper modification code ar present, it can't be a security issue. I am going to Bug this if manually Fire and Sword pruning everything that says "EU4" or ever did doesn't solve it.

This is a deliberate double post as I am unable to resolve this problem by uninstalling all content including using manual removal of any remaining items per Support's clean install method. A mod can either move this to the Support thread I will start or simply close it. I have already postscripted the preceding post three times and no help appears likely from what I can see here for what must be a one-off local, or esoteric DLC combo issue that I cannot fathom.

I am a former Tech and support mod from another game publisher and whatever the root cause of this issue is something particular that I have yet to discover and beyond whatever general instructions are available. Thank you for any help. ~Al

This is normal if you play without the El Dorado DLC. Without the DLC, exploration is not limited by range, but instead by attrition. You can explore the whole world even without the flagship bonus if you can get enough fleet basing rights and repair your ships often enough.

Thank you for your response.!

You are the first person to mention this across a week of posts on Reddit (including Imp. Council) and posts here. This is news to me (and evidently a number of people who also could _not_ think of why this might be happening) .

IN fact, I have 40 added paid bits (according to the launcher) - that is to say nearly all of them- but there are two or three exceptions _including_ El Dorado. Unfamiliarity with this particular limitation includes those unfamiliar with the game in Tech Support.

To be quite honest, I would say it is quite difficult to have followed a singular exception in a more recent DLC to have that sort of -one particular- item out of many similar in a DLC feature limited by a DLC far back at the dawn of the slew of paid contents we have been submitted over the years. :)

As I have not followed the game closely nor the discussions accompanying releases over the years, seeing the dev diaries from the GC DLC and having the file and particular feature set being 'in' that DLC, I missed any reference to this exception if there was one in the hail of verbiage selling the DLC here and on Steam.

Your response saved my limited sanity and a lot of time wasting down the road. Thank you and the horse you rode in on! ~Al

Pretty sure that is a reference to the fact (per OOOOefpkwèfkweèf's post) that "Without the ["ED"] DLC, exploration is not limited by range, but instead by attrition... "
Therefor having a feature that increases 'exploration range' when 'exploration range' is not a thing is, well, not a thing.

I do have an answer however, since that concept of one's 'exploration range' was often conflated in various fora (including this one) with the 'supply ship range' which indicates where and when attrition begins. Since I did not have the 'ED' DLC (and as an old man cannot be blamed for avoiding such) I did not realize that a specific range seperate from the supply ship range was in fact, - wait for it: a thing.

TLDR : :
I figured it just increased the ship supply range for that fleet in which the Flagship was located thereby delaying when attrition began and forshortening where it would end on the return. Ah, indeed is ignorance bliss! :)

The long and short of this: many did not know the ED DLC was the cause of the softer benefit, and many others did not realize it could be -whether they had it, or didn't.

So it's not relevant, then.

It's what Rio expected it to do based on what they'd seen online. So sure, as it turns out it's not relevant since Rio doesn't have El Dorado, but they didn't know that when making this thread.
