I'm playing a game as Denmark and I'm having some trouble integrating Sweden. When I try to annex Sweden, it says that I need to have her as a personal union partner for 50 years. Well, it's been more than 50 years, and the only reason I can think that she won't join is because she's tried twice to break away. I've taken her back both times but I wonder if that resets the clock. I've tried to improve relations with her and have relations at +190, but she is still hostile (flame icon). How can I get her less hostile towards me?

Become stronger. It might not keep them from being hostile, but if you're strong enough, they won't revolt no matter how much they hate you. Avoid costly wars, expand where you can, and keep your army in tip-top shape and they shouldn't declare war on you.

Fight a war ASAP, get prestige. Fighting wars together also increase relations.

Teutonic knights are a good target. You won´t want to see Poland stronger anyway. That naturally is too late in your game by now I bet, I´d restart.

The smaller the army, the more they'll hate you, so you would better concede small concessions once you start loosing rather than risking getting utterly defeated. If you want to be a bit gamey, you can also spend much time at war; basically just wage war so much that the Swedes never have the time to recover during peace time (AI hates DOWing when it hasn't rebuilt its army and has some manpower left, even if it's just DOWing a tiny OPM).

Alright so I'm actually playing a Denmark game myself in Multiplayer with a friend and after integrating Norway and taking some of Hansa territory Sweden started getting supporting independence from England which made them feel all strong and mighty and they declared war on me 6 times in a row before I said fuck it and took half of their country. When I took half of it they stayed in the personal union and no longer rebelled as they were much weaker and I integrated them 50 years later.

So just take their shit everytime they declare war on you, they will stop eventually.

*I should note I had positive relations and positive prestige, not sure why but they declared war on me within a year every time the truce was up, 6 times in a row.

Thanks for your input, everyone. I eventually left a diplomat there to keep my relations at 200. At 200, they would see me as their rightful overlord, but anything below that and it was utter hostility. I eventually formed Scandinavia and got into a big rivalry with the UK. I'm embarking on a naval expansion and I have two big colonies overseas.

One thing that got me was my relationship with Lithuania. We were bestest buddies for many years, and then they suddenly got hostile. I didn't get a big swath of land near them or change religion, but they got really hostile with me and I thought we were gonna throw down. Eventually they got nice with me again and now we're besties once more. Weird.
