Hey everybody. Curious as to what all of you think the best decision is on which to take (Offensive or Defensive)... Or which countries/situations are better suited to which styles.

I usually always go Offensive for the shock bonus, but maybe one of you experts out there will show me the light :)

Hehe, I used to do the same when I started to play the game but now I am mostly going full defensive. Offensive is better in early game and defensive better in mid/late-game imo. Combined with Pioneer Corps NI you can have real fortressess later on (plus it has a pretty cool event which gives money and +1 quality/+1 defensive slider move for free).

Anyway, both are good, just don't leave it at zero for too long ;)

Hmm, I'm going pretty largely offensive ... not by using slider changes oddly, but just by having the right adviser (a level 6 +30% morale one right at game start, pure luck) generating events (I've been surprised how frequently I've had the event where you can go either offensive or defensive - 3 times in 47 years).

To me, I think offensive is better as with my WC style play, I am confident of winning my wars, it's just a matter of destroying the enemy armies as quickly as possible then sieging & waiting (or, increasingly, assaulting). So, my own regions hardly ever get sieged, & any defensive bonus is wasted. Granted, the sieges would go a bit quicker if I was defensive though.

I know nothing about the events linked with the Pioneer Corps Nat Idea though.

As Russia I always go full defensive. Let the enemy starve to death while sieging my lovely cities!!

I always go full defensive whatever the country I play (except maybe hordes). Artillery cost and fort defense bonus are very good things.
With the Engineer Corps NI and a good army tradition, I always get generals with 3 in the siege stat. They are really efficient while sieging, so wars are shortened.
Furthermore, the "Scortch the Land" action being a very good option if you're facing huge armies, you can rely on your forts in a more confident way while attrition is killing enemies.
