Prologue

Verona, August, 1064 A.D

Noon was soon aproaching the walls of Verona, taking up everything in it's darkness. Ironically one could say it had taken the graf Frederich I himself, as he gradually become severely ill on that day.

Knowing it was the end of his days, the old graf decided to call forth his son, to obtain a promise from him.
********************
The Chambers of the Old Wolf

Three days have past since the first attempt of the disease to overhelm the old Graf; however the Graf stood against it bravely doing his best to outsmart the Grim Reaper.

"Where is my son?!",Would the graf ask everyone, every night.

Finally on the on the 12th day of his illness, the young heir arrived. He was accompanied by two knights Anno and Gotfried, the sons of Berengar, lord of Hildenheim. Frederich, a rather average height man but powefully built, was the first one approaching the chambers of the old Graf. Immediately recognized by the soldiers guarding the chambers, he was let in through the silken courtain in the chambers.

The sight, he saw, amazed him rather than shocked him. It was his father in a panceria(light version of mail hauberk), with a sword hunging from his belt, and a shield attached to his back. He was standing in front of Frederich, majestic and mysterious as he always was.

"My son", the graf said with his voice clearly infected by the disease, "You see me here for the last time, for i am dying."
"That is impossible father, he are but healthy in your battle armour"
"Silence, i do not have time for such conversation. step forward my son."
The young Frederich, now clearly shocked, stepped forward.
The old wolf took off his belt with the sword, and with his hand raised high in the air, he announced.
"Lord, this is my son i am leaving here on earth. Raising my hand high, i reach out for your merciful hand. However i want you also to decide. If my son here, will become the greatest man in the world, make this hand a symbol for his destiny. If he shall fail, strike upon him with your wrath."

Frederich clearly stunned by the words of his father stood up, only to be hit in the face by his father. Falling down on his feet again, he raised his eyes on his father looking for an answer to this action.

"And this is how you remember it"

so it was on 15 of August in the year of the Lord 1064, Frederich I has joined the Lord in heaven...

Chapter I- Of Knights and the Clergy.

Author's note: The Holy Roman Empire(or simplier German Empire) will be noted as only Roman Empire from now on.

December 1066, Rome
It has been days since the death of the Old Wolf, but the dust which has arisen from his death, still haven't fallen down clearly. There was much controversy about the death of the old Graf. Some people say that it was the beautiful Hildegarde, who wanting to set her son on the lands of St.Gallen, ordered to poison her own husband. Others talk about the murder of Frederich by the hands of his own son! However, these were meaningless gossips, as everyone knew, that none of the the accused could have done such a thing. Nevertheless the young graf sent a letter to the abbot of St.Gallen, as the first thing in his role of ruler, informing the latter about the succession...
****************
"Sire it seems you have taken it fairly easily that your father has died..."-started Godfried von Steutzlingen, a man who never feared to speak what has layed on his tongue.
"It has been his time, dear Godfried. Isn't that right father?"
"God has willed it, my child.", answered a voice belonging to a chubby jovially looking priest. Father Siegfried von Staffenberg, the designated candidate to the newly created bishopric of bishopric of Landau, who had joined Frederich's party for some time already.
"But why? Why does call will things which cause people so many sadness. Why does God let so many awful things happen", continued Godfried annoying the priest even more.
"My Child, you better not question the Lord Almighty, especially when where so dangerously close to the Pope..."
"He's right, Godfried, we should better finish this theological debate, and make haste, for we are aproaching the magnificent Rome", interrupted Frederich, riding infront of the two men."Give signal to the men, for we shall ride into Rome tonight."
*********************
They walked easily, through the tight streets of Rome; the footsteps being the sign of the ruthless and unlimited power of the Roman Empire, they, they the undefeatable, they the Imperial Guards of the Roman Empire. Their swords of war, being the symbols of Empire's potence to deal with threats, their black black mail hauberks as their unlimited loyalty to their masters, and their iron officer staffs, as the tool of keeping the insubordinate in the chains of slavery.

Tonight, they had a special task, a task which could've changed the destiny of the Empire. They marched forwards to the manor of the Imperial magister in Rome, Egbert of Urslingen, escorting their master, the arcbishop Anno of Cologne. Just like an decade ago, he marched to spill the blood of his political enemies.

Egbert, was sleeping, when his manor was set in fire. The man, confused and shocked by the situation tried to open the front door, however without success as they had been locked by from outside. Egbert seeying no chance in escaping through the doors, jumped out his balcony. The price for this freedom was great. He had broken both of his legs, in a moment which needed all the physical strength in his legs. The Imperial guards have caught up with him, cutting the poor man into pieces...

Such was Rome, a place full of intrigues, where beatings, violence and general brutality were common place. The nobles of the Roman Empire have been trying to oppose this violnce, created by the Imperial Regent, Anno of Cologne, however they were all too afraid of their possesions and titles. In such things, they needed a new blood in this old disgusting politics. What news have broken out, when Frederich and his companions have arrived in Rome...

P.S Sorry for such a short update, i'll try to rearrange my time during christmas.

Welcome Saber. And a great introduction to the forums you have provided us. From the title, I assume there will be plenty of conflict between the Holy Father and your rulers. That ought to be fun. Good luck!

The Dark Alliance

14 Decemeber 1066, Rome

The "Lustful Brunhilde" has been for long reknowned for its beverage. According to the taverner, the place was built by his forefathers, the great D'Annuzio whom, he again claimed to be related to the Roman Caesars. One might think, that in Germany, he would have been hanged for such treason, however, it was this unproper humor, which brought dozens of customers to the tavern. However, apart from these ways, Gilberto D'Annuzio, had other ways of keeping himself customers. For long since establishing of the Tavern, he had been the member of the "Scarlet Rogues" a brigand group, formed of italian nobles, stripped of lands, who now fought the Imperial "invaders". When things have gone better for Gilberto, he decided to renounce his claims to the Imperial lands in Italy, and live a life of a normal citizen. However to keep his tavern the most popular place in Rome, Gilberto had to often use force, intimidations, beatings to "invite" the Romans to his place...

Unfortunately for our heroes, it was this place, that they've decided to take as their stop-by inn...

The night was heavily stomping with its dark boots of mist, when our the Germans entered the tavern. The tavern itself was no wonder, but it was kept in a good taste. The first thing that one could've noticed was the big chimney, which always burnt, keeping strangers and locals alike, always warm. Another thing, which would be the reason for the name of the tavern, was that the tavern itself was filled with Roman "light=headed" women. Some of them true beauties, other less gifted.

"Hey there strangers, i see you are not from here, and probably don't know the beauties of Rome...", one of the women started, showing off her big breasts.
"Good day, my lady, yes we are not from here, and if we recover from our exhaustion, we will surely "visit" "Rome" from one end to the other", Frederich unable to stop staring at the women's bust.

The Germans, from the very start began to irritate the locals. Their extravagant entrance, with their arms on, only provoked an agressive feeling in the "Lombardians". More to that, their blonde hair, and Frederich's red beard, attracted the women, subsequently further provoking the locals.
So it was clear, that their would be a fight, when one of the women, was still insisting on the strangers, sitting on their laps and entertaining them.

Four men, armed with curved falchions jumped up to a fight, hoping to scare the foes, rather then fighting them in real. To their surprise, the Germans decided to ignore them, only Anno von Steutzlingen getting up, and putting on his helmet.

Frederick: "Good sirs, we are not looking for a feud, having just arrived. I say, we settle this in a more peaceful way, ale for all!"

The Italians, who did not undestand a single, word took the sentence as a provokative sign for attack, so they jumped up to Anno, who was already armed.

Four men surrounded the three Germans. Although they did not have any armour, their Falchions were deadly weapons which could cause. The Germans, on the other hand were armed from teeth to feet, all wearing short mail hauberks, with norman helmets, and norman shields.

The fight began, when the ferocious Anno, with is sword, jumped on one of them men on his right. With no intention of spilling blood, Anno smashed his foe, with his sword's iron pommel. The unconcious "Lombardian" fell heavily on the ground.

Frederich, who now also jumped to his feet with a guarde, asked Gotfried, to run out of the tavern, and call the rest of the armed retinue, as he wished not to spill blood that day. Gotfried, so ran to the doors, only to be blocked by a huge warrior. The cunning Gotfried however was a far more superior warrior to the huge man. With great agility, he parried the "Lombardian's" swing, countering swiftly, and piercing the man's left hand. Again, like his twin, he knocked the foe unconcious with his pommel.
Running with all the might in his legs, he yelled, calling Frederich's retinue.

Meanwhile, the fight in the tavern continued, as the two "leftovers" fought evenly with the Germans. The two seemed to be more experienced, then their fallen friends. At one moment, Frederich pushed by a Lombardian to the ground, was unable to parry any further blows. Sinking to the ground, because of his heavy armour, he tried to block himself with his shield, which was by now heavily battered. Anno, unable to help his friend, screamed for help, when suddenly his cries where heard. The annoyed Tavenern keeper, Gilberto D'Annuzio, with a hunting crossbow in his hand, shot Frederich's foe in the back, killing him instantly, but saving the first from sure death.

"You are alone, surrender!", said D'Annuzio, grasping a look at Anno.

Seeing no further hope for a fight, the lonely man dropped his weapon, surrendering.

After, handing the men to local Imperial authorities, the Germans returned to the tavern, apologizing for the incident, and paying the tavern keeper for any damages caused. For long this incident would have been remembered by Gilberto...
****
Few days later, Mansion of Imperial Magister, Rome
"My liege, i have found out everything about those men. There Swabians, from St.Gallen, who probably came to Rome for some interest, which is unfortunately not know to me. Amond them there are 10 knights and 20 infantrymen, probably serfs promised freedom. To this retinue, 30 servants should be added. They are led by Frederich of Buren, graf of St.Gallen, a minor noble related to few Swabian families among them the Badenians, Zahrigen and von Bonngau."
"Related to von Bonngau's? Powerful family...That the man we need... You can go Rupert. Inform, however the nobles, for i have found the man, who could soon defeat the interests of our holiness Anno of Cologne..."
****

The hunt

10 men where slowly moving forward to the inn where the Swabians, have themselves installed. The inn was one of the lousy ones, however it was cheap. The armed men, under the protection of night, slid inside the inn, with their goal of capturing the unfortunate noble...
****
House of the Magister, Rome

"Wake up, my sleeping princess, wake up" a man's high-pitched voice had Frederich awaken, only to find himself in an old, terryfing, gloomy place. The man who had him awaken, was a typical German noble, with his long tunic and bushy beard.
"Who are you? where...Where am I"
"Do not worry my young friend, you're safe here with your friends. I am your friend and you as my guest are here to do me a favor, which i'd like you to do."
"What do you want, where are my men? If money is your goal, i'll pay you"
"Perfect, Perfect, I want you my man. But, but, too many questions at the same time. Your men, are probably looking for you right now, for you have been kidnapped. You are in the Imperial Mansion of the Magister, and I am Rudolf von Hagenau, Imperial Magister, lord of Hochensfall. Untie him!"

Frederich untied, jumped to towards one of the guards stealing on of their knife.
"Now you have no choice! I will not ransom you if you won't tell me what do you want from me"
"You see Frederich, as you maybe know our King Heinrich is still a young inexperienced noble, incapable of ruling. As you know, the country is ran by the imperial regent, Anno of Cologne, Archbishop of Cologne, the most powerful man in the Empire."
Frederich now clearly nerved pointed the tip of the dagger at Rudolf's neck.
"What...do...you...want?!"
"I want you, to join our cause, the nobles' league, and break the power of Anno, in the name of the Empire"

to be continued

Hey everyone, i have a question, which is kinda serious. I've gone with my game till 1115 and there where 2 crashes in my game. One major, which destroyed the game(luckily i had another copy which worked), and another during the 2nd game(luckily this one wasn't really serious, i loaded the game back). Although problems seem trivial, i am a bit scared, because i read in the tech supp, that few people had the same problem(the too BIG game one). So if you could, maybe some advises? I'd owe you.

P.S A small request, has anyone, who use totomod 200 events and new pics for events. How many events you normally get, did you ever get the abdication one? In my game, its usually gifted child: bla bla bla.

What version of CK are you using ?

Patch 1.04a or the public beta

The public beta is much more stable, then 1.04a. At least for me, maybe 1 or 2 CTD's in 300 years of gameplay.

But when your game is already to big around 1115 then you have a serious problem, only advice for me would be to updated your computer, but that isn't much help and not always easy to do.

Or you can this piece of software. It removes dead and useless character from your saved game file. I don't use it myself, so I don't know if it is any good.

I also don't play with the 'totomod'

Well with such a PC you should have no problem at all with a 'to big' game file. So I have no idea what causes your bug. I have a Athlon 1800+ (that is something like a Pentium III I guess, 1.5 Ghz and 562MB of memory, and the game still runs fine

I believe it only removes 'useless' characters. But with one gig or RAM you don't really need to use that software.

I have a 3,4 ghz and 512 mb ram and no problems, not with a 30mb savegame so that should cause no problem and you shouldn't need it.
