I noticed nuclear power research. Do we have the heavy bombers to handle such bombs or do we plan to develop such bombers? :)
This is really long term, we have a production-ready Transport Plane design (for paratroopers...), meaning we are only one tech away from having a strategic bomber design. This Nuclear tech will probably not be used against Germany, but you never know if the cold war will turn hot, I'm keeping Nuclear tech up to date, just to be sure, and that's all for now... One day, when we have more LS a serious Strategic Bomber program could be interesting in it's own right, but with the investment in our Carrier-Destroyer navy, and the need for a somewhat up to date army, Str is on the list of long-term, one at a time techs, like nuclear research and Rockets for that matter...

Research:
The Military Academies in Moscow and Leningrad have been very busy, improvements were made to the Army's Tactical Command Structure (Level 3),
Integrated Support (Level 3) was also getting some serious tweaks, our Artillery and AT-Artillery support Regiments will get a boost to morale.
A radical change in Divisional level organisation is now being looked at, the plan offers the possibility for Superior Firepower, adding a fifth Regiment to our Divisions.
A new type of Infantry Light Artillery (Level 4) is now being designed, to give our Infantry Regiments some extra toughness.
The VVS has finished it's first proposals for Fighter Ground Control (Level 1), based on the idea that Ground-based Radar Stations could assist our planes to find the enemy, and in combat.
They are now looking into even more efficient communication protocols between Radar Stations and Airbourne Fighter Squadrons in another Fighter Ground Control (Level 2) project

This is becoming rather worrying, it seems the tidal wave of Axis spies is simultaneously making the Communist party less organised, and the NTS more organised, this doesn't bode well for next month's popularity statistics. We need to put a stop to this somehow, the country needs to be united behind the Communist Party.

17th of July 1939, theft of Logistic Strike Tactics technology
The 17th of July 1939, A small Hotel in Kuybyshev, a small city on the Moscow-Vladivostok Trans-Siberian railway line, +5,2°C, 6am Moscow Time,

I had traveled to Kuybyshev, to look over the new plans for the expansion of the Trans-Siberian Railway line, it was pretty boring, and just as expected they said the expansion would take close to twenty years to reach Vladivostok with the current level of funding. This just isn't very high on the Committee's priority list so this won't change anytime soon. The meeting ran late and I stayed over in a small nondescript state-run hotel.

I was awakened by the incessant ringing of the phone, and when I answered, to my surprise, it wasn't 'Tri' with some small diplomatic scandal, it was 'Shest' ' our KGB 'correspondent':

"I am glad to announce that our investments to place spies in the UK have payed off, after the capture of two more British spy hunters last week, our British team started concentrating more on stealing technology, and we already have results! They have managed to steal RAF documents, with diagrams and extensive analysis, about Logistical Strike Tactics (Level 2), while the stolen tactics manuals aren't the latest, they are a huge improvement, over our total lack of Logistical Strike Tactics Manuals and guidelines. This development should make our Tactical Bomber Wings (BAD) a lot more effective in severing enemy supply lines. Interestingly the document also illustrates that for Logistical strikes, larger Strategic Bombers would be more effective than medium-sized Tactical Planes, something to think about... well, that's all, sorry to have woken you, I called when I heard, I couldn't wait to make your day!"
This is of course great news; the VVS, with it's limited research budget can use all the help it can get, only the Navy has fewer researchers. Let's hope our spies continue to deliver, and I'm going back to bed, but first:
Let's drink to our spies once again!

Greetings,

'Odin'

It will be interesting to see how all this hardware goes up against the Wehrmacht: they have a nasty habit of quickly chewing through all one's hard won units :(

It will be interesting to see how all this hardware goes up against the Wehrmacht: they have a nasty habit of quickly chewing through all one's hard won units :(

That is, of course the big challenge of the game. By my reckoning we should have enough Infantry to properly man the Western front by the end of 1939, the only reserve for now is the Armoured Army Group, so to put up a serious defence you will be seeing some serious extra Infantry production to place corps in cities and other strategic locations, especially Guards Corps in a few very important ones... . I am hoping that the large amount of TD's on the Western Front (1 in every Infantry / Motorised Corps), that should soon be a reality, will blunt the German spearheads, even if just a little bit more than Infx3, Art. What should also be noted is that, while impressive, this isn't even close to the final form of Soviet Industry, because we are spending 100+ IC on consumer goods, once our neutrality goes down dramatically (Finnish Winter War), much of this IC will be available, so even more military production will happen.
I quickly tagged around to see IC strength throughout the Majors, and right now the UK has more IC allocated to Production and Upgrades than even the Soviet Union (with only about 160 base IC compared to our 209), they do have Consumer Product Orientation policy, so their production is quite a bit less efficient than ours. The Americans seem to be building extra factories (They're up to 280+ from 265 base IC at the start), which is rather worrying for the end-game, right now their laws are really bad, so they have only half of that as available and spend a lot on Consumer goods.
If all else fails, we can always win through attrition, if we survive long enough... Theoretically we should be able to out-produce, and out-reinforce the Germans in the long run, the longer they wait to attack, the stronger we will be... I guess we'll see what happens...

6th of August 1939, 'Tri', call about Molotov-von Neurath pact
The 6th of August 1939, Minsk, near the Polish Border, a worker's shed next to the base of what is to be a Machine-Gun Bunker, +8,1°C, 4pm Moscow Time

I had gone to Minsk, on an invitation from 'Devyat' ' to go and see where the new fortifications, hardening the city, will be built. He was very enthousiastic as spending on fortifications has doubled since the start of the program, and 'Devyat' ', being a builder at heart dreams of a fully fortified border like the Maginot-line. He is ready to settle for current investment levels as the amount of units to man such a border line has not been deployed yet. As we got to the foundation of the westernmost Machine-Gun Bunker, less than a kilometer from the Polish Border, I was motioned towards a workman's shed, that had been equipped with telecommunications, a telephone call for me, again, if they need to know, they always know where to find me, it is not clear how this works, but they just do. None of us knows the true extent of the Secret Committee's network, information being, of course compartimentalised. It was 'Tri' on the telephone, and he was very cheerful:

"You will soon read about the non-aggression pact that has just been signed with Germany right here in the Kremlin. It has been dubbed the Molotov-Von Neurath Pact by the Capitalist media (named after the two Foreign Ministers who signed it). The Germans will surely attack us anyway sooner or later, but what makes me so happy today are all the secret clauses, negotiated in secret for months now. The secret part of the deals stipulates that Germany will recognise, or at least not interfere with our claims on the Baltic States, Karelia and Eastern Poland. That last one is, for now unenforceable, as Poland is a member of the Allies, but if the Germans were to take over Poland they have to give us the Eastern half, or face a 2 front war with us and the Allies at once. The Germans also promised a buffer-state between German, and Soviet Poland, but it would just be a puppet of Germany without it's own Army, so essentially a symbolic concession. We can now finally roll our muscles to take what is rightly ours and be sure to get away with it!... I'm drinking champagne right now, so should you."
I looked towards Eastern Poland, and thought to myself, that all of those forests, and a few cities behind them, would be ours sooner rather than later, and probably without a bloody war, well not for us anyway. Let us rejoice, and plan the next step now. We should wait a little not to make it seem like these claims were part of the deal. Stalin has hinted Finland should be the first government to hand over part of their territory under threat of war... (Hindsight laughing with it's deep, evil, laugh)

Greetings,

What does the border with Finland look like? Fuel and supplies will be a issue in that winter-wonderland so I would suggest most of the Divisions are Infantry and/or cavalry. I am not sure if you are looking for advice, but many of their most important provinces are coastal. So may I suggest a two-punch strategy. Send in Divisions to engage Finnish units all along the border and then a second wave of troops landing in their ports once the 'first' punch has drawn their notice. It depends on your Navy, of course, and if they can control the coastal waters. And, of course, Air Superior will make grabbing air bases important but also will be a perfect job for the new carrier.

Interesting ideas. An early chance to test out the power projection capabilities of the new carrier-based naval doctrine?

Right now, we have XXII GSK (5x Mtnx3) guarding Murmansk, and aiming for Oulu. Across from Karelia we have XIV MSK (3x Motx3, 1x Motx2), aiming for Sortavala, and Ruokolahti with it's Air Base. in the south we have 1ya Armiya ( I SK, II SK, III SK (3x(5x Infx3, AT + Infx2, TD))) with Viipuri as primary, and Helsinki as secondary objective.
XXIII SK (5x Infx3, AT) is in reserve in Leningrad, and could be used for possible naval landings.

many of their most important provinces are coastal. So may I suggest a two-punch strategy. Send in Divisions to engage Finnish units all along the border and then a second wave of troops landing in their ports once the 'first' punch has drawn their notice. It depends on your Navy, of course, and if they can control the coastal waters.

The absolute overriding priority for the Finish campaign is to capture Viipuri as quickly as possible (we need it for the Restore the Officer Corps event, which will lift a -15% modifier on our Leadership). Your strategy sounds good, the first punch along the front will depend on the AI's pro-activeness, but it has the units to pull it off. A naval invasion would need to be against lightly guarded provinces, as we have only 2 transport flotilla's (2nd one will be delivered on the 17th of August). But we will still attack Viipuri by sea, as soon as possible. The entire surface navy is in the Baltic right now, and taking down the Finish Navy / controlling coastal waters should not be a problem.

Air Superior will make grabbing air bases important but also will be a perfect job for the new carrier.
An early chance to test out the power projection capabilities of the new carrier-based naval doctrine?

The Leningrad should be delivered by the 20th of October, so we will probably have 2 CVL's for Air Superiority over the Finish coast, the CVL's will be integrated into the Red Banner Baltic Fleet (2xBB, 1xCA, and 7 escorts), so the CAG's should not be indispensable to win naval battles against the Finish Navy.

1st of September 1939,'Tri', telegram about 'Danzig or War' and German DOW on Poland
The 1st of September 1939, Just outside Vologda, +2,4°C, 5pm Moscow Time.

My new report had only just reached Stalin's desk, when we received a telegram from Moskva, 'Tri' wrote:

- So it begins - STOP - Germans at war with Allies over Danzig - STOP - Lucky our troops are ready on Polish Border - STOP - be ready to enforce pact - STOP

There was a picture attached, the Germans had sent us a picture of the first Stuka-strike of the war, it isn't clear what they mean with this picture, all we know is what we can see, and the promise of the Eastern half of Poland.

stukas-over-poland.jpg

Stuka's Over Poland
Stalin wanted to declare war as well, but there is no broad support for a war, neither in the Party, nor among the people. Our troops are ready on the border, ready for any eventuality.

DanzigOrWar01:09:39.jpg

Our troops got to the border just in time.
Odessa HQ has started deploying 8ya Armiya to the Romanian border as well, this seems like it's going to be a big war. A big debate started within the Committee about when to Mobilise the Army, as once the Germans get Warszawa, we will have the all clear for territorial demands from Finland.

An hour later the USA started Gearing up for war. This might be a problem in the future, but for now, let us hope they will be the enemy of our enemy.

Everyone seems to be going a bit crazy, and champagne will be popped as our path to greatness is, now, in sight.

Good night,

'Odin'

I doubt you have to worry much about the Americans at this point (see every Non-American HoI3 AAR ever made). You should worry more about Finland and, a tad, about Japan.

German-Polish War:
GPW11:09:39.jpg

In ten days the Wehrmacht has made great strides with their new high speed surprise warfare. Most notably the Germans have taken possession of Katowice and Krakow in the south, as well as Danzig along the Baltic Coast, as well as the Air Base (Level 1) in Suwalki.
Despite being clearly on the back foot, the Polish Army has managed to reach the outskirts of Breslau, one province away from the border, while the Wehrmacht is one province away from Lodz.
Secret talks with the Allies, still have reached no agreement on the USSR shortening the hopeless war in Poland without incurring the wrath of all of the Allies, this means we will probably not get involved, and the Polish figure as much as only a single Polish Infantry Division remains on our shared border. We should be getting our half of Poland anyway, as the Germans surely can't possibly think they can deal with us, and the Allies at the same time...

Momentous events - its that time of the game! Finland will of course be the big test of the rejuvenated Red Army you have built and the path to better leadership for it. If thing turn out in the West as the Allies (especially the French) must fear, that ultimate test against the Wehrmacht is creeping ever closer. BTW, I'm not sure the rapid growth of Trotskyite support will be welcomed much by Uncle Joe: I foresee him 'picking a fight' with his former colleague turned adversary in the not too distant future.

PS: would you (not Odin) but let's say Soviet agent code named 'RoverS3' like a short and low key visit, accompanying the foreign minister, to an alt-world Ankara for the 28 January 1939 Glorious Union Foundation Day celebrations? The guests are about to arrive and your avatar is cordially invited. :)
