Report on the state of the Soviet Union for the ten day period between the 26th of March and the 4th of April 1939,

by 'Odin'

Army:
4 new AT Regiments, with the new impressive 85mm D-44 AT-gun have been deployed to 206, 156, 106. and 47. SD, this means that now all Divisions have a dedicated AT Regiment in Lt. General Poluektov's XVIII SK, 8ya Armiya, 4th Army Group, Odessa HQ.
Only one SK (5 SD) on the Western Front doesn't have AT Regiments yet
Army numbers (Brigades/Personnel) Reserves included (these numbers don't include regiments being upgraded):
Front line troops: 484 / 1.452.000
Support troops: 119 / 119.000
Total fighting troops: 603 / 1.571.000

Total Army Personnel: 655 / 1.597.000
Officers: 56.431 + / 65.650 needed / 85,957 %
Active Leaders: 206 / 42 Reserve
Production has started on a new Mtnx3 Division for Stalingrad HQ
A new Infx2, TD unit has started training, and SU-85's are being built.
Another 5 AT Regiments have started production.

There has been a call for more Units from Field Marshals Sokolovskij (10ya Armiya), and Voroshilov (Far East Theatre), they are claiming they need 8 Armoured Regiments 100 Interceptors, and 300 Tactical Bombers, we will see what we can do, two Infantry Divisions have already been redeployed by sea from Stalingrad HQ to Vladivostok, but it doesn't seem to be enough to counter the Japanese build-up in Manchuria.

A new Aero Engine (Level 1), the Shvetsov M-63 Radial Engine has finished development (this is an improved version of the M-62, that was based on the American Wright R-1820 Cyclone Engine, this version produced 1.100 hp, on take off), the Shvetsov factories have started mass-producing the M-63's for them to be placed in our existing Aircraft.
The Airplane designers have now started working on better Armament (Level 1) for our Single Engine Planes.
New 10mm Armour (Level 2) for our Armoured Cars is ready to be added to our existing BDRM-2 Armoured Cars.
Members of the Elite Moscow Military Academy have started working on better Special Forces (Level 2) tactics, allowing our specialist to be better organised.

On the Communist side of the spectrum not much changed, some people went back to supporting the Bukharinites, and the Communist party lost no popularity. Quite a few people have however switched from supporting Capitalists, to supporting Fascists and Monarchists, for now this is dividing the opposition, which could be good for us, but it was just not enough division to remove the feeling of a Fractured Government from the people's minds.

The new KV-1, finally a decent Tank, it is however prohibitively expensive for now, our army still needs a lot more Infantry, and replacing BT-7's with BT-7M's is a lot cheaper...
Ways to improve the organisation of all our Armoured Regiments, are being looked into now, the new doctrine is being called Blitzkrieg (Level 1)
Better FIrst Aid (Level 2) procedures and training, now being implemented, should cut down on attrition within the army ranks.
Development of a new Civil Defence (Level 2) program has started, once done it should cut down on the duration of wartime repairs.

Good progress is being made, especially in tank design. The KV-1 compares very favourably with the CV-33 Turkey has recently been able to build herself in a different alternate time line (instead of having to buy such a useless bucket of bolts via a license from Nationalist Spain)! Still, when you consider what the Germans will be fielding ...

'Italy joined the Axis.' One small line, but with great import!

Six spies from Slovakia!? How can they afford them? And have I missed something (ie did the Munich event and then subsequent Czech collapse trigger early), or are they from Czechoslovakia?

The First Vienna Treaty was triggered very late (26th of April 1939, instead of November 2nd 1938) see post #198 on the previous page (page 10), this is where Slovakia was created, there is even a map. This set off a chain reaction of events, the last one slightly ahead of time, see post #199

29th of April 1939, Launch of the Moskva CVL
The 29th of April 1939, Leningrad Navy Docks, 5,1°C, 3pm Moscow Time,

After more than a year's work in the deepest possible secret, the Soviet Union has revealed to the world that it has successfully completed the construction of it's first Aircraft Carrier, the Moskva. The unveiling included many dignitaries, even Stalin himself was there to see the first take from the deck of the brand new ship, for security reasons, the dignitaries watched the spectacle from the deck of the Krasni Kavkaz. I managed to join the photographer in a small barge right in front of the brand new Bow, giving us a prime view on Navy Air Commander Zhavoronkov's historical take off:

mig-3CarrierTake-off.jpg

The first Soviet Plane, a MiG-3, ever to take off from the deck of the Moskva performs a low overflight to celebrate the occasion. All similarities with British and French Carrier designs are entirely coincidental... (This is actually HMS Eagle with a Mig-3 photoshopped into the picture...)
Sea trials in the Inner Gulf of Finland are now underway to bring the crew, the pilots and the ship into the routine of Carrier Operations, Navy Air Commander Zhavoronkov's I. KPA has been deployed on the Moskva for this purpose. Once properly organised, the ship will Join Rear Admiral Kuznetsov's Red Banner Baltic Fleet.

Leningrad's shipyards have now started construction of a series of new military transport ships to form 2. Transportnaya Flotiliya, this will double our navy's transport capacity.

This is a great day for the Soviet Union, and it's navy.
Let us celebrate,

'Odin'

After the big Slovakian spy surge, it seems the Fascists made large gains in popularity, this has cost us the clear majority of public support, as most of the fascist gains come from the communist side. The opposition is still severely divided, but our government stays 'fractured' without a majority.

Research:
Our naval engineers have finally finished some actual Navy Research, the finished a new 60.000hp Destroyer Engine (Level 3) design, this should give our future Destroyers a cruising speed over 30 knots/h, and more crucially, an operating range of 2.700 knots, meaning they exceed the range of our Battleships, and of the secret fleet Carrier design.
It was determined that the quickest way to improve our naval power now, was to look into Air Launched Torpedoes (Level 1), this crazy-sounding project was given the go-ahead, because it used some well know Aeronautical technology, and it would be a force multiplier for our CAG's, and our Carriers by extension.

14th of June 1939, Infrastructure update #5
The 14th of June 1939, Homel, 8,1°C, 2pm

Another meeting reviewing our Infrastructure, same rules as before. There were still no surprises:

The 20 Infrastructure projects on which only the final touches are still to be done are the following:

-Western White Sea Coast, Archanglesk-Murmansk railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 6' in Soroka and Sumskiy Posad.

-Dniepr East Bank, Mariupol-Dnipopetrovsk-Kyiv-Homel-Smolensk railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Slavutych, Boryspil, Chernihiv, Chachersk, Homel, Ripky, Berezan, Voznesenske, Chornobai, Hlobyne, Kremenchuk, Kozelshchina, Mahdalynivka, Zaporizhzhya, Welykyj Tomak, Kherson and Horki.

-Narva East Bank railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Kingisepp.
The same strategy has been followed to decide on the next 20 projects which will now start.

In the following 20 provinces work will begin, adding an extra track or another hardened road.

-Transsiberian railroad, Kuybyshev-Omsk:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Kuybyshev and Voronovka.
We have to prepare for a possible confrontation with Japan that would make Sevastopol-Vladivostok convoys to supply the Far East Theatre untenable, very slowly we will be improving the road to the East now.

-Dniepr East Bank, Mariupol-Dnipopetrovsk-Kyiv-Homel-Smolensk railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Chavusy, Slawharad, and Karma.

-Bug North Bank, Mykolaiv-Kyiv railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Mykolaiv, Nova Odesa, Arbuzynka, Lypnyazhka, Uman, Illintsi, and Stryzhavka.
-Don South Bank, Rostov na Don-Stalingrad railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Azov, Cheryumkin, Zernovoy, Karpovka, and Leninskiy.

-Lopan North-East Bank, Stalingrad-Voroshilovgrad-Kharkov railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Belaya Kalitva and Gornyatskiy.

-Voroshilovgrad-Voronezh railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Migulinskaya.
The first fortifications in Biesankovicy have been delivered, work continues towards 'Level 2' fortifications.
The goal of bringing infrastructure up to 'Level 7' in all the Provinces behind strategic river lines (all rivers that are sort of well oriented to create a good defensive line, and provinces between the rivers) is well underway.

Greetings,

'Odin'

The 29th of June 1939, Berezan Air FIeld, +7,8°C, 4pm Moscow Time,

I was on another field trip to survey the good work being done by our ever more skilled and efficient construction teams. I took the train along the new and improved Kyiv-Dnipopetrovsk-Mariupol railway line on the East bank of the Dniepr river, to get from Kyiv to the new Air Base in Berezan. It wasn't much to look at, just a dirt strip and a small shack for now, but work crews were already laying the foundations for a hardened runway.

A VVS ground crew starts the Shvetsov M-63 engine of a Polikarpov I-16 Interceptor at the new Air Base on the plains of Berezan, strategically placed about halfway between Homel and Dnipopetrovsk, this new base is meant to close a hole in the Air coverage along the Dniepr river.
When I got through my short visit of the facilities, I was motioned towards the shack for a telephone call:

It was, of course 'Tri' again:

"Turkey has taken a leaf out of Germany's book, through a bit of manipulation, an increased military presence and a very probably rigged referendum, they managed to convince the French to just give them the Hatay region of Syria, this gives the Turks the Port in Iskendrun (formerly known as Alexandretta), and two more Mountain provinces, it seems there are no meaningful amounts of resources, or Industrial Capacity in the handed-over provinces, but it does show we have to look out for Turkey, as they might have imperial ambitions in the Caucasus region, and they control the Bosphorus, which is our essential gateway to the Mediterranean. I ask of the Committee, and of the Nation's Diplomats: When will we start taking what we want? If even a regional power like Turkey is playing this game, and winning, why aren't we?"
'Tri' was starting to sound more and more sensible, with rising tensions in the world, why not take advantage? STalin, however was still holding off, the Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov has been having secret meetings with the Germans, a dangerous game, but one that could give many of our wildest claims some serious backing, well, until the Germans decide they need to attack the Soviet Union anyway. It seems Stalin is playing the long game, aiming not for a few meaningless border provinces, but for large swathes of Poland, Finland, the Baltics, Romania,... this scale of land-grabbing would only be possible without war, with the backing of another faction, the allies having already Guaranteed Poland, don't seem ready for this kind of deal, Germany, however seems to see the Allies as the first threat to be dealt with and hopes to keep the big bear out of their hair for the moment, this can only give us more time to prepare, so we all wait impatiently for a secret accord to be signed, then all brakes will be off.

'Tri' sent over a map within 2 hours, it was flown in one trip from Moscow to the new Airstrip in Berezan by the I-16 shown above (With the new Shvetsov M-63 Engine the I-16 is the fastest plane ever to have served in the VVS, with a cruising speed of 560kph, the plane was running on fumes when it landed though, so this trip wouldn't have been advisable in wartime), the new Syrian-Turkish border:

Note the little dent between Aleppo and the coast, (Iskendrun, Kirikhan, and Antakya) that's what Turkey gained from France today.
Well I have a train to catch, I want to get to Kyiv for supper,

Greetings,

I noticed nuclear power research. Do we have the heavy bombers to handle such bombs or do we plan to develop such bombers? :)
