Research:
A new type of support unit has been developed by putting a 122mm heavy Artillery gun directly on top of an old T-28 chassis, and then adding some sloped Armour, mostly at the front. They are calling it Self-Propelled Artillery, and this first model has been called the SU-122. (Historically these were built on Captured German Chassis, T-34 Chassis, and a heavier version on IS-1 and IS-2 chassis)
su122_draw.jpg

The blueprint for the new SU-122 Self-Propelled Artillery
Research on another new type of unit has started, as someone had suggested that soldiers could be dropped by Airplanes behind enemy lines, it seems the Americans have already conducted successful tests with this jumping out of airplanes business, Paratroopers will be developed as a type of infantry unit jumping out of Airplanes, lightly armed, and specialized in sneaky warfare behind enemy lines.

The SP Arty will definitely come in handy for your mobile counter-attacking forces in the coming struggle. Then later for the great offensive to smash Fascism.

Looks like Japan's feared Kempeitai have broken your spy ring there: will you temporarily search for greener fields - perhaps wait for evidence others are weighing in to decrease their CE before launching another mass espionage attack?

If you are going to play with AG AI on, I would suggest some practice before hand because it takes a little getting use to. I enjoy playing SU with Army level AI on because they can be given manageable objectives to attack/defend, but the AI loses focus and/or sends units on whacky paths .

Looks like Japan's feared Kempeitai have broken your spy ring there: will you temporarily search for greener fields - perhaps wait for evidence others are weighing in to decrease their CE before launching another mass espionage attack?

Well, for now we are slowly beefing up our spy presence in the UK again, as we didn't lose too many spies there while we were saving up for the failed Japan mission, I expect the UK espionage mission to have 10 spies in 30-40 days at most. We have stopped sending spies into Japan to be slaughtered...
If I had the leadership to spare, I would have broken through the Japanese kempetai with a pure Counterespionage mission, while feeding in replacements until they can't keep up anymore, but that's just not an option, so back to the UK, and maybe next year we will launch another spy adventure, somewhere else.

If you are going to play with AG AI on, I would suggest some practice before hand because it takes a little getting use to. I enjoy playing SU with Army level AI on because they can be given manageable objectives to attack/defend, but the AI loses focus and/or sends units on whacky paths .

The point of using AG AI is that the units go and do weird stuff sometimes, just like in real life, war is chaos. I've had some experience running a twin AG AI war as Japan in a drawn out Sino-Japanese Campaign, and later in Australia and India, so I believe I have a minimum of feel for how this will go work, but of course the scale is a lot bigger, so we will see about that. Maybe I'll play ahead a bit, but I don't think that would be great for the story. I expect that there will be trouble and insubordination in the ranks, and win or lose, that's how I like it. I will however be running the Air Force (probably) and the Navy (definitely) without AI assistance. We'll see how this goes, all we can do is supply objectives, troops, equipment, doctrines and supplies, and then the Red Army will do it's thing, good or bad...

PS: that is one mean-looking AT gun! The barrel on the thing!

The SP Arty will definitely come in handy for your mobile counter-attacking forces in the coming struggle. Then later for the great offensive to smash Fascism.

The Red Army will need all the mean-looking hardware it can get, if it wants to resist the teutonic invader...

Well finding out what that is would be too expensive, so I guess we'll keep guessing, for now.

Wow, look at THAT over there! <snatch!> :)

Let's hope the KGB can get back to that mentality sometime soon, and steal me some more juicy naval technology.

26th of February 1939, Infrastructure update #4
The 26th of February 1939, Vitsyebsk, 2,2C, 2pm

Another meeting reviewing our Infrastructure, same rules as before. There were still no surprises:

The 20 Infrastructure projects on which only the final touches are still to be done are the following:
-Western White Sea Coast, Archanglesk-Murmansk railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 6' in Nyukhcha and Kamenka.
-Lovat East Bank Railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Andreapol, Toropets, Velikie Luki and Mintzevo.
-Memel Northern Bank, Minsk-Kaunas-Memel railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Uzda
-Dniepr East Bank, Mariupol-Dnipopetrovsk-Kyiv-Homel railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 6' in Slavutych, Boryspil and Chernihiv.
-Narva East Bank railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 6' in Kingisepp.
-Vitba North Bank railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Drissa and Rasony.
-Bjaresina North Bank Railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Biesankovicy, Chalopienicy, Bialynicy, Kirovsk, Parycy, and Rahachow.
-VItsyebsk-Smolensk Railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Dubrouna.

The same strategy has been followed to decide on the next 20 projects which will now start.

In the following 20 provinces work will begin (16) or continue (4), by adding an extra track or another hardened road.

-Western White Sea Coast, Archanglesk-Murmansk railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 6' in Soroka and Sumskiy Posad.
-Dniepr East Bank, Mariupol-Dnipopetrovsk-Kyiv-Homel-Smolensk railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Slavutych, Boryspil, Chernihiv, Chachersk, Homel, Ripky, Berezan, Voznesenske, Chornobai, Hlobyne, Kremenchuk, Kozelshchina, Mahdalynivka, Zaporizhzhya, Welykyj Tomak, Kherson and Horki.
-Narva East Bank railroad:
Infrastructure will be upgraded to 'Level 7' in Kingisepp.
After the completion of an Industrial complex in Tjumen, the go-ahead has been given for the construction of fortifications in Biesankovicy.

The goal of bringing infrastructure up to 'Level 7' in all the Provinces behind strategic river lines (all rivers that are sort of well oriented to create a good defensive line, and provinces between the rivers) is well underway, now fort building has begun, modestly for now.

Greetings,

'Odin'

This is looking good - I hope your Army commanders are smart enough to use them when the time comes. If they are, those vile Hitlerites will get more than they bargained for if/when they invade.

Out of interest, would it be possible to have a strategic screen shot or two of current border deployments along the main Finnish and European fronts? Does Odin have any agents in the field or in Moscow with access to such information?

I doubt the AI will use the river lines, like a human player would, but my hope is that fortifications and selective infrastructure improvements will make river crossing quite a bit harder for Germany, and as troops get exhausted less quickly behind the rivers, these would be natural defensive lines, whether the AI's deployment takes rivers into account or not...

Well the troops around Finland, and in the Far East are actually deployed, the ones on the other European Fronts just sit in their bases, waiting for objectives from STAVKA, the committee has now started giving preliminary objectives to European Armies, and once they are in place I will post screenshots of those as well.

Here is the current Finnish front, with 1ya Armiya near leningrad, XIV MSK more to the north, and XX GSK in the cold north and near Oulu.
FinnishFront28_02_39.jpg

For the 1000 days of the Secret Committee, by late 1939, I will also do a couple of overview updates, on the Army, Trade, Diplomacy, deployments, infrastructure,...

I'm not in a huge hurry with deployments as Germany still hasn't triggered the 1st Vienna Award event, that is long overdue... I'm thinking that if they don't trigger it within 6 months of the historical date (by the beginning of May), I will tag to Germany and launch it manually, I hope I won't have to do that, and they will trigger it themselves eventually...

Thanks for the map and other info :). I'm very interested to see how the AI goes in Finland on the offensive and then on the defence of the Motherland. I've never played using more than occasional AI command and am keen to see how the theatre, army group and army systems and settings work out.

The Communist Party is going back in the right direction in the polls, as is the junior ruling party, this does seem to be only a realignment of already left-leaning voters, away from the Bhukarinites . The opposite has happened for the far right, while in the center there has been a huge gain for the Octobrists, because of this they feel entitled to 2 cabinet positions, and the government is fractured again...

26th of March 1939, 'Tri', call about the end of Czechoslovakia
The 26th of March 1939, Moscow safe house, -0,5°C, 5pm Moscow Time

I was having some tea with the committee's man within the KGB's British Espionage Mission, we only know each-other's code names, his is 'Desyat' (Russian Number 10). He was rather worried about British spy hunting and we talked about how our British mission is only very slowly growing, because of the efficiency of British Spy Hunters, this leaves close to no time for actual Technology 'borrowing', and a surge in counterespionage spending from the British could conceivably knock out our Spy team. Luckily they deploy only 4 to maximum 5 spy hunters at any one time, replacing losses, but not much more, which means our numerical superiority is sufficient to kill one from time to time, and to stay afloat.

'Desyat' then started ranting about how the spies in France haven't 'borrowed' any technology for months, while they have lost no spies at all since they stole those Naval Bomber blueprints, he suggested that he could do more, but as we have no information on French Counter-Intelligence efforts, this isn't necessarily guaranteed.

All of this fun tea time chit-chat was interrupted when the phone rang, it was 'Tri' again, and I'm starting to really wonder about his mental health:

"How do they keep getting away with this? The British are Weak, this is UNACCEPTABLE! The Germans just erased Czechoslovakia from the map! They put a loyalist of the Nazi Party in charge of the new Slovakia, then they gave some of the land to Hungary, so they now had a border with Poland, this should really convince them to join the Axis. And the Czech half of the country was just integrated into Germany, including the Skoda Tank factories. The Allies just let it happen, and we are to far away to do anything about it. We will have to stop this Hitler character, because the Allies don't seem to feel like War, not even when their ally gets erased from the map.. ! It seems all this was discussed in Vienna, without any presence of the Allies, the only people there were the Italians, the Germans, the Hungarians, the Czechs, and the Slovaks. They're calling this the Vienna Award. You know what they did when the Czechs didn't give them what they wanted? The Hungarians, just marched half their army up to the Polish border, and Hitler told the Czechs that if they attacked the Hungarians, they would have to deal with the Wehrmacht. This is outrageous, maybe we should go and just take Bessarabia, and Karelia back, maybe the Baltics? Just because we can... Actually we should find a way to make this happen, if the Germas get away with it, why shouldn't we?!..."
Half an hour later I got my hands on a map of the new situation:
FirstViennaAward16:03:39.jpg

Notice the new Polish-Hungarian border, and how Germany just drew a line between their Polish border and Bratislava, and took everything west of that line. Slovakia is just a leftover that is run by Hitler's cronies.
Well that's it for today, back to tea and Scones,
Greetings,

'Odin'

27th of March 1939, 'Tri', call about the annexations of Albania & Memel
The 27th of March 1939, Moscow fortifications, -0,7°C, 10am Moscow Time

I was looking around the brand new Moscow Fortifications ('Level 2') with 'Vosem' ', before the official inauguration this afternoon which I will not be attending, for obvious reasons...
The newly installed phone in one of the brand new command bunkers rang when we walked past it, 'Vosem' ' picked it up, and then immediately handed it to me, it seems the people who need to know always know where to find me... It was 'Tri', again:

"Now the Italians are at it as well, Mussolini just called up king Zog and demanded he give them Albania for a bit of money, when Zog acquiesced the request, the Italian army landed their troops, and just took over Albania, easily fighting of the small, non-mobilised, and under-equipped Army of king Zog. It seems this is the new normal, axis members just get to take what they want, and no one lifts a finger... Why is no one starting a war to ^put these fascists in their place, I know that we are, again too far away, and not prepared for a large-scale war with the Axis, but the British must have the ability to land some troops in Albania and humiliate the Italians, before anyone can do anything about it. This is increasingly frustrating to watch..."

Half an hour later I got my hands on a map of the new situation:
AlbaniaAnnexation26:03:39.jpg

Well this is the end of Albania as an independent nation.

By 5pm I got another phone call about more claimed territory, and this one hit closer to home, Germany has claimed Memel from Lithuania, and not wanting to suffer the same faith as Italy, and seeing the Panzers on their border, Lithuania just gave it to them, not a single shot fired.

This is what Lithuania looks like now:
MemelClaims_27-03-39.jpg

This is dangerously close to our border, our troops have started deploying towards our border with the Baltic states now, under direct authority of STAVKA.

In response to all this the British finally did something, well, they promised they would do something. They have Guaranteed the Independence of Poland, this should shied us from a direct war with the Germans, for now... How the British would get their troops into the Baltics to physically help remains a mystery...

In response Poland has started to Mobilise. Not that their cavalry would make a chance against the Wehrmacht, but every little bit counts...

Hungary has formed a Military Alliance with Italy, without actually entering the Axis Faction.

I hope we will soon be able to press similar demands on our neighbours, because this is just not fair, and it is giving the Axis an advantage, something that will make it harder to deal with them in the future, this is not looking good...well back to visiting bunkers and tunnels, construction has already started on another series of fortifications in Moscow, and also on the first Machine-Gun bunkers in Chalopienicy. At least our motherland is slowly becoming more fortified.

Greetings,

'Odin'

The ominous Axis machinery of war is on its well choreographed path now ... your efforts will soon be tested - but against those pesky Finns. Good luck with that!

Nice write-ups of the strategic developments, too. :)
