5th of March 1937, 'Odin', 10-day report #6, and the end of horses on the front line
The 5th of March 1937, 3am Moscow Time,

I've just returned from a grand Red Army party. The occasion is the total replacement of a all horses in the army by trucks, meaning our ten Cavalry Divisions are now all fast armoured Divisions with a combination of light Armour and Motorised 'Cavalry'. There was a demonstration of cavalry tactics, no longer of use to our army (for now anyway). Later there was a parade of 9. and 10. KP with their brand new trucks.

An army cavalry charge (demonstration), now a thing of the past in the 'modern' Soviet Union

Upon coming home, I discovered a short letter from 'Sem' ' leader of our internal industrial intelligence operation. He indicated that the truck-building state enterprises received an immediate order to continue producing trucks for another two brigades of Motorised troops, these should be ready by the end of June, fresh recruits will have been trained in their use on the battlefield by then.

The Kadets are still gaining popularity without any significant organisation.

Somehow, thanks to a spectacular rise in popularity of the Trotskyite counter-revolutionaries, the ruling parties (Chief of the Airforce is part of this faction) have become dominant in popular opinion, the government is no longer 'fractured', there is no more serious opposition to Communism, only different views of what it should be are a threat now.
Domestic spies have been set upon a new mission, they will now work on catching even more foreign spies, and a little propaganda to further raise National Unity so the people can stand as one, undivided and confident.

19th of March 1937, 'Dva', 1st Division fully equipped with T-18s
The 17th of March 1937, near Kaluga

Eight new Support Regiments of very modern ZiS3E 76.2mm Anti-Tank guns (Historically these were introduced in 1942), have just been delivered to eight Rifle (Infantry) Divisions (184, 180, 183, 181, 182, 143, 121, 55 SD), part of VI, and VII SK of the 4ya Armiya, Second Army Group, STAVKA. Most commanders were happy to have any support as, just on the western front, 51 Rifle Divisions are still without any support. Some old school officers from the previous war mumbled that they preferred conventional big gun Artillery to these specialised weapons. The factories will continue producing these weapons in great numbers (an order for another 7 Regiments is next).

I am here in Kaluga to witness the first full fat Guards Tank Division, with now two Regiments of T18's and one Motorised Guards Rifle Regiment (2 GvTP just received a full complement of T18s). These T18's are an upgraded old design based on the T16 light tanks, which in turn were based on the Renault FT and Renault NC tanks captured during the civil war.
drawing_T18.jpg

The T18, only 4.38 meters long about the size of a modern day midsize SUV, it isn't very large, nor very modern for a medium tank, but it's something and it does weigh about six tons. Research towards a more modern replacement, is in full swing.

The assembly lines will keep churning out T18s, for now, these are destined for 4 GvTP, of 2 GvTD, next, giving us a second 2xArm, Mot Division. The guards are already looking forward to delivery.

May the Red Army one day conquer the world,

'Dva'
Thanks to recent industrial efficiency breakthroughs, work on two new Industrial Complexes has started, without having to further limit the production of tanks and Anti-Tank weapons.

8. Flotiliya Esmintsev was delivered to Kuznetsov's Red Banner Baltic Flote, this Flotilla is composed of 5 Gnevnyi-class Destroyers.
The Sevastopol dockyards immediately started production on another 5 Destroyers to form 3. Flotiliya Esmintsev, these will be of the, theoretically slightly better, Kiev-class. Designers claim these Destroyers will reach speed up to 30 knots, the committee is doubtful about this claim, but getting close to 30 knots would already be an improvement, not to mention the improved guns and Armour.

There seems to be some serious external meddling in USSR politics, the NTS Fascists are up by 6 percentage points with no organisation to speak of, and somehow the ruling Communist party pulled even further away from it's high organisation value.
Our government is again 'fractured' (NU -0,05 modifier), and domestic spies have started increasing the ruling party's organisation again...

In the next ten days, a lone Regiment of ZiS-30 Tank Destroyers, will be deployed to a Motorised Infantry Division. So except for espionage, research, and volatile popularity, not much is happening right now.

Lots of political meddling it seems. A suggestion for some of the stats (where the info would be worth it anyway) could be indicating a delta figure where there has been a change. Eg: NTS 7 (+6) or some such?

Our German counterespionage mission is slowly failing as Germany has clearly increased investment in spy-hunters and we can't raise ours very much without jeopardising our research. German counterespionage went from 5 to 8, they now outnumber our spies. Our spies in the UK, on the other hand are very successful at hunting their spies while still trying (unsuccessfully) to steal their technology.

Enemy covert political action has stopped and suddenly communist parties' popularity took off making the government not 'fractured' again. I'd like to think the timid investment of domestic spies shoring up ruling party popularity had a part in this, but is looks this is negligible.

Now a small question, what does the committee think about heavy tank development, H Arm is pretty powerful, Germany will probably be using Tigers, it's expensive in IC and research, but is it worth it? Theoretically I think it's not really worth it, but I also saw several Arm, Mot, Eng, TD divisions getting destroyed by a single encircled German H Arm once playing as the UK. Another option is to research H Arm to research it's Armour to toughen TD's, without building the expensive beasts.

Somehow our spies in Germany have managed to evade the German spy hunters for a full ten days, they managed to catch one, and one newly trained spy has infiltrated into Germany, this new guy seems to have restarted a limited 'Increase threat' mission.
On a side note, the french have started (very poorly) training spy hunters again, and we caught the first one, the second one is still active. Our spies don't feel threatened, and mostly continue trying to steal plans.

Question on Intelligence: Spies have been sent on tech espionage missions in the UK and France since 1936 and still haven't managed to steal a single technology. This seems weird since SU is very backward in several areas France and the UK are good at, especially naval technology and doctrines. As an intelligence chief I would have thus sent my spies to dockyards and the like... It seems the game doesn't take holes in your research into account when calculating the tech stealing probability. Does anyone know how this probability IS calculated? Anyway both countries are close to empty of domestic spies, which bodes well for other nation's spy missions, it also costs close to nothing to maintain 10 active spies in both as very few get caught.

This week our German intelligence operations ran out of luck, as german counterespionage went from 8 to 10, and we lost 3 of our spies to these spy-hunters. Yan Berzin, in his former life a technical specialist in these matters suggested to stop sending spies to Germany one by one, as they will inevitably get slaughtered very quickly, instead he proposes to wait until an entire 10 man team is trained, in the goal of equaling the german numbers in a single deployment. The downside is that we will have to wait more than 100 days before this team is ready at current leadership spending.

My spies in Germany have put very little effort in raising threat the last ten days, so some other countries must be increasing German threat again (maybe that's what the Germans reacted to rapidly increasing the number of spy-hunters.) Further details about the SU-76:

OSA-76-1.jpg

The new Tank Destroyers are 50 cm longer than our current Medium Tanks (T18+), and 1,4m longer than it's predecessor the ZiS-30.

Looking up these figures I noticed that even our current (up to date) BT-5 light tanks are larger than our (slightly outdated) Medium Tank T-18 Tank Design.

The historical nickname for the SU-76 was 'Suka' (or 'Bitch'), this was because steering it was a bit of a 'Suka', the real one (a 1941 design) had one 4-cyl engine for each track, which explains the difficulty as one person would have to throttle both to steer.
The in-game version has a (probably single) V12 Mikulin M-17 engine based on a license-built BMW airplane engine (is the 'Suka' nickname still relevant in game?), this means in our timeline this beast has a 450hp engine instead of two 85hp engines, so it should be significantly faster than the historical version, which already had a top speed of 45km/h...

Our current in game version does have a less powerful AT gun however 57mm instead of the historical 76.2mm gun. They will be up-gunned to 76.2mm once we research AT Barrel and SIghts 3.

Our Generals, if they knew, would be very happy to have 1941 level Tank Destroyers in 1937-1938, so theoretically we should have less trouble stopping the panzers than the actual early war Red Army.

Schwerpunkt 1 research was completed and was followed up by research on Mobile Warfare 2
A new 37mm Medium Tank Gun design(Model 28) was finished and very slowly all T18 should be re-gunned with the new 37mm's.
Hindsight makes me wonder wether these 37mm's would even scratch a Tiger at point blank range...
The research team started work on a new Medium Tank Engine (2) right away.

12th of June 1937, 'Tri', call about Spanish Civil War
The 12th of June 1937, the Kremlin, 4,2°C, 5am Moscow Time.

I was woken abruptly by a telephone call. 'Tri' was yelling at the other end of the line, it didn't matter as everyone in the background was yelling as well. He yelled: 'The Spanish worker's revolution has started, it's a full on civil war'. After a few minutes the situation became clearer. It seems the socialist party won the previous elections, some anarchists and communists saw this as a great reason to start fighting the wealthy and the church, and much of the population went into the streets to demand socialist reform. Nationalists in the army did not like this turn of events and started shooting at protesters, the official government then turned against a large part of the army and the civil war erupted in a matter of hours, with the country utterly divided, both geographically and politically.

SSCSCW.png

The patchwork Spain has become...

After calling the committee about possibly sending troops or money, they answered that it would be a logistical nightmare to perform more than a token effort to help the Spanish revolutionaries.

This is what I communicated to Stalin and Mikhail Kalinin. The decision was made to announce to the world that we would intervene on the side of the republicans.(Spanish Civil War: Soviet Intervention), it was hoped that this would encourage the revolutionaries and deter intervention on the side of the Nationalists.

We were right on the first part, for the second part however, both German, and Italian Interventions were underway within hours. We will see what happens...

A few BT-5 tanks were sent over as a token gesture, but certainly not enough to make a difference, we have to think of our own armed forces, so the far away Spanish Civil War is just a good distraction for the capitalists of the world.

You asked before about heavy tank development: I know it's expensive, but you may really want it later in the war. Good for cracking tough nuts on the offensive. Maybe not seriously yet, but you may want to do some preparatory research at some point. HARM + GDS + ART divisions? I bet you'd like a few of those in a couple of years.

That makes sense, I might try to research the preliminary H Arm Brigade tech by the end of 1938, and maybe I'll upgrade just the armour for a couple of years to beef up my TD's (they don't need to be faster than Arm, so H Arm Armour will make them stronger without slowing down my Arm Regiments). Then, maybe present building H Arm as a reaction to the Apparition of Tigers. If they were to be built in the future I think it would ideally be in H Arm, 2xGds, Art/R Art, Eng Divisions.

What's your take on Art vs. R Art? I should make the decision pretty soon, especially if I were to use Art.
