Odd Succession Question!

Noob here! So I'm playing as Denmark, which is an Elective Monarchy. I'm in power as queen and my firstborn son is heir to the kingdom, but he's also the Duke of Saxony (which is under the HRE).

If I die, does the Duchy of Saxony go to Denmark, or does all of Denmark become part of the HRE? Thanks!

Should go to Denmark.

It would only go to HRE if your son has an equivalent or higher tier title. Aka he'd have to be King of Germany or Emperor himself.

It's because he takes on the highest tier title as his primary title. Duke is lower than King so when he takes King it becomes primary. Saxony leaves HRE.

If he's King of Germany he's still a vassal of HRE and basically inherits Denmark as a secondary title. Still vassal of HRE.

If he's Emperor, well....

Do note though that holding a duchy that is de jure HRE will paint a giant bullseye on you. The only way to prevent the kaiser from declaring war on you and taking it back county by county is to either swear fealty to him or to get rid of the duchy (give it to a courtier and grant him independence).

Also take HRE laws into consideration. High crown authority prevent titles from passing out of the realm, de-jure or not. In this situation you would become a vassal king under the emperor.

Sorry but I can't recall the equivalent in Conclave as i've been on an EU4 binge.

Is your heir actually a vassal to the HREmperor or is he your vassal (or independent) while Saxony is de jure HRE? If he is in the HRE and inherits Denmark, then I think he would remain a vassal of the Empire as king unless Danish law prevents inheritance outside of the realm. If it does, then your heir will abdicate the duchy of Saxony to his heir when he becomes king of Denmark.

If he is not currently in the HRE, then he also wont be after he inherits.

What happens if both realms have high crown authority? Do it prevent the inheritance, by making the vasals illegitimate in the succession?

I'm pretty sure that if a vassal duke inherits an independent kingdom, he will become an independent king, regardless of crown authority.

The law that prevents inheritance outside of the realm only prevents titles within the realm to pass to people outside the realm. But in this case a title from outside the realm would be passing to someone within the realm.

And as far as Danemark is concerned, I'm pretty sure that the law that prevents titles from passing to people outside of the realm only applies to the titles of your vassals.

Is that right? I've never seen a king become a vassal to an emperor with the exception of them being made a king while they were already a vassal.

It's not right. High crown authority would just prevent outside people from inheriting the duchy of Saxony if the duke dies. But if the duke inherits an independent kingdom he becomes an independent king while keeping Saxony.

So the Queen died, and Denmark became a vassal of the HRE.

Really? They must've changed how that works because in a game I played as tas a vassal in the HRE I became independent after inheriting Bulgaria.

This is why we need dual vassalge. If you're a vassal to one Kingdom, and later inherit a title in another, you should be serving both Kingdoms.

In your case, as a King of Denmark, you should be independant. But, as a Duke of Saxony, you should be a vassal to Holy Roman Empire.

Of course, if some laws prevent this, then it's business as usual. But you should definitely get a cassus beli.
