I was playing Canada (No Historical Focus) and got the Edward VIII abdication crisis event. I picked the option of being okay with him marrying Wallis Simpson. This had the effect of locking me out of the Patriation Political branch. Before I could complete the Strengthen Commonwealth Ties focus, the UK flipped to Non-Aligned via The King’s Party, locking me out of Strengthen Commonwealth Ties Political branch. The UK made an alliance with Germany and joined the Axis. I was dragged along as a Dominion even though I was still Democratic and had no way to either break away or switch to Fascist to lean in to things. I thought perhaps if I could get free of Dominion status something would open up, but no luck. I was the lonely Axis democracy.

My suggestion would be that if Canada finds itself in this situation, escaping Dominion status should cause the game to bypass the Patriation focus and reopen that Political branch.

Yeah, definitely seems like there are some oversights. Supporting Edward in the Abdication Crisis means pledging your eternal loyalty to him, which means no going any focus tree but strengthening Commonwealth Ties. Commonwealth Ties requires you to be the same ideology as the UK though, which can lead to issues if you don't complete it before UK: flips non-aligned. I believe there's a way for the UK to turn you non-aligned, but I don't think the ai really does it.

Even worse is that going Strengthen Commonwealth Ties locks you into supporting Edward if he refuses to abdicate, which can really mess you up if you took it thinking the UK was going to stay democratic (why not strengthen ties with Australia/New Zealand/South Africa if Britain is going off the rockers?).
