Title says it all. Why the hell am I getting dinged minus 10 papal influence for owning my capital as a historically catholic nation?! I thought this would be taken care of in the hotfix but apparently not... I'm about to convert to protestant... lol...

Becouse Rome belongs to Papal State, which is head of catholic church. I don`t think pope likes you if you march your divisions to his kitchen.
In my opinion you should have option of signing same kind of treaty what Mussolini signed with the pope

I understand the modifier for all other catholic nations... It just doesn't make any sense for Italy though because owning Rome is a condition for forming the nation, and then Rome becomes your capital, I was given the option to return the province but [expletives deleted] it's my capital both in the game and historically.

I like the idea of an event that allows the modifier to be removed, or a map edit that makes the Vatican it's own province (that might be a bit much but I'm just saying)... The game should be designed to allow Italy to stay catholic without being at a disadvantage to other catholic nations and own Rome.

stick it to the pope and convert to reformed, that religion is soooo good. especially if you're a trade power

Also if being Catholic is an absolute must then Venice or Milan are solid choices, Milan was the Roman Empire's capital for a long time in the late Western Empire and Venice is just a solid strategic choice for a capital.

Exactly. The Italian king that occupied Rome was actually excommunicated for doing that.

History lessons, always handy!

It's an interesting idea but converting to reformed is basically saying "I'm never going to be Holy Roman Emperor" which as the (likely) dominant nation in the HRE is just silly.

Protestants are better anyway. I am yet to play as catholic for the whole time. From time to time I am thinking I will try it, but the temptation is too big - catholics just suck (unless you are a papal controler which with this modifier is probably a big no, no). Just dismantle HRE or better yet, win the religious wars and make it protestant. But save before you try it - I´ve had some weird things happen in the beta patch concerning the war in the empire. ;)

if you want historical facts: Rome in the eu timeframe wasn't exactly very "catholic" all the time. Look at the Borgias and all. Heck, conquering Rome as catholic nation is just liberating Rome and the Pope from all the sinful activity that took place there.

I'd say that the pope should be redirected to an arbischop state to keep him away from harmful influences.

On a more serious note: If you got bad relation with the pope you get -100% paplal influence (if he's outraged) so who cares about -10 papal influence?

As you say, just go protestant or reformed as Italy.

Just vassalize him and he'll love you again. But -10 papal influence pretty much ruins any chances of any utility from Catholicism.

Go protestand or reformed, catholic is basicly the worst religion in the game for alot of nations anyway, only big and powerful you can get something decent from that religion.

i find it annoying its a game of chance now. Previiously you could rake in influence from converting, and controller gave ability to break royal marriages. Now, even as a big country, you might only have 10% chance.

It is not a sham democracy like the HRE, also it is so powerful bonus to be PP + you have all the other things like free stability but now you actually have to weight it aganist the uber armies of reformed or the cheap ideas of protestantism.

Sorta. As the article itself says, he was excommunicated during the broader formation of Italy, BEFORE taking Latium. 6 years after the fall of Rome, the Pope tried to open talks to lift said excommunication, but the king himself refused. So...while there was obviously some backlash - and not light - it was far from the current situation. And the Pope didn't really have much more power than it did in 1870, even though it was undeniably more.

Or just use Constantinople as capital like Constantine the Great, he was one of the few emperors to rule unified Roman Empire so he could have chosen what capital he would have wanted.

He's ruling Italy not Rome, having your capital not be in Italy would be... weird.

All this talk of just be protestant etc doesn't really address the fact that forming catholic Italy for which Rome is a requirement effectively trashes all utility of being catholic. Nor does it address the fact that a centre of reformation is less likely to pop up in southern Europe making the conversion more difficult for Italian states. Italian states really shoudn't be subject to the occupation of Rome triggered modifier seeing as they are directed to occupy Rome.

If you are one of the first countries to convert to a newly-spawned flavour of Western Christianity, you are given a centre of reformation for your newly adopted faith.

Italian states really shoudn't be subject to the occupation of Rome triggered modifier seeing as they are directed to occupy Rome.
The Pope wants his city. I agree that there should be a way for Italy to get out of the penalty without surrendering Rome back to the Pope, but it should not be a trivial-and-instant thing.
