I'd throw this in the bug forums but first I want to confirm the behavior.

So I have two Fighter 40 models, the J2A1 and J2A2, the only difference between them is that the J2A1 uses non-standard materials and the J2A2 has extra fuel tanks instead.

As intended, the missions are the same so the wings can be mixed

And that's also the problem, because the J2A1 is marked as obsolete and I have a healthy amount of J2A2 in stockpile but the older planes aren't being phased out unless they get shot down in which case they do reinforce with the J2A2.

So simple question, is this intended behavior?

Your example wing has both models in it. Are you saying that in this particular wing the changeover is not occurring? Or, if the changeover is not occurring in wings that have only J2A1's, are those wings set to only permit models that are already in the wing or obsolete to reinforce it?

If I recall correctly the behavior in the past was that older models would get traded out for a better one, whilst I figure the game has no way to figure out if a model is better than the other with the current designer at the very least marking as obsolete should have given a pretty clear signal that any existing J2A1 should be going to the stockpile while I have enough J2A2s.

I kinda need the J2A1s in the stockpile so I can have a factory convert them into J2A2s.

Oh I forgot to answer your specific question: The wings are all on default settings.

Sorry for the delayed response, I was not notified you had replied to my comment.

Hopefully you got an answer to this issue.

However, if the J2A1s are marked as obsolete and the wings are on default reinforcement setting, I believe the J2A2s should supplant them. Have you tried setting the wing reinforcement rule to 'Elite' level?

I can also confirm that changeover does not happen from time to time. My example: GER 1936 fighter plane A and plane B, both air-air spec only. If A is marked obsolete it will still stay within existing wings. Same issue with US 1936 models.

The interesting thing is that changeover does not happen to all wings, only a few. Say out of 10 wings, 8 will replace and remaining 2 will consist of obsolete plane while plane B will pile up in stockpile. And changeover will def happen when you start fielding the 1940 fighter model in the same role/equipment.

Just to clarify, there are nothing wrong with the planes/equipment or replacement priority as 10 fighter wings are identical and 8 out of 10 will replace correctly.

Trying to re-obsolete plane A managed to get 1 out of 2 wing to replace correctly, but this is a rare fix. Tags also have no effect whatsoever (do they even work?)

Other than that - deleting wings and recreate is also one way, although not a very efficient and de-stressing method to say the least.

I have never encountered this issue so I can't offer any suggestions beyond my previous post. However, if by 'Tags' you mean the wing reinforcement rules, I can say that they work for me as the tooltips indicate.
