For those interested, first campaign has been completed (the voting was held in a Croatian forum). From various scenarios, the "English counter-offensive in 100-year war" with the goal of conquering France has been choosen. The game ended on March 1444 and I started writing the AAR and I hope to post the first update soon.

Chapter I: English Resistance

King Henry IV Lancaster
1108a9ef.jpg

Introduction

The year is 1399. Henry IV Lancaster was just coronated the King of England. Before the coronation, he was knows for the rebellion against the former King Richard II many years ago (tough he was one of few rebells that were never punished) and for two unsuccessful Lithuanian campaigns.

Around a year ago, King Richard II and Henry's father John took care that Henry gets exiled for 10 years. Not long after that event, John died because of a mysterious death. While Richard II was campaigning in Ireland, Henry returned to England, took over the control of England, made Richard II abdicate (whom he then threw into a dungeon where he died on 14. February 1400) and declared himself King Richard IV Lancaster, King of England and France, Lord of Ireland.

***

Historical University of Mainz, 7th January 2021 A.D.

„Wait a second...“ Professor Rosemeier said to his student „What does this have to do with your research?“
„This is a good start to show my theory.“ William, the student of the university, replied.
„What theory?“ It was 8 A.M. and Professor Rosemeier forgot to ask his student what his work was about. He even forgot to read the title page. Must be the age... it is hard to be a University Professor when you are not so far from retirement.
„On Legend of the Fourth Father of course. Didn't you read the title?“
„Fourth Father?“ Rosemeier ignored the question. „You must be kidding me. Don't tell me that you traveled the world for 7 years just to make this kind of ridiculous research.“ Rosemeier threw the papers back to the student.
William was a talented student of the University. When seven years ago he said that he was going to travel around the world to research a certain historical subject, Rosemeier was intrigued and postponed his retirement to wait for the student to finish his research. If he knew what he was researching, he would have been in retirement now.
„I knew you would say this.“ William said with a smile. Obviously, his mentor's reply didn't shake him up. „But I assure you, I would not be researching something ridiculous for this many years.“
„From experience I know that young people don't know what is worth spending time on and what not.“
„From experience I know that you used to have a lot of faith in me.“
Professor Rosemeier sighed. „All right... but please show me what a hell does Henry the Fourth have to do with the Fourth Father... besides the number of course.“
„I can't reply on that now. Instead, lets look at something interesting in some documents from before year 1399.“
„Documents?“
William opened the other fascicle he had with him and took out a copy of an old letter from there.

To his Majesty, the King of France
God be with you, my Lord. I send this letter to tell you that someone wants to see you dead. In order to take care that you don't doubt the truth of this information, I decided to remain anonymous (or you would think that I am lying to get in good relations with you). How I got this information... I can't tell you. Please, forgive me.
Yesterday, the Lord of Burgundy was visited by a certain aristocrat from Germany... Mainz, to be exact. The King welcomed him and they dinned together with that noble. Since he had something to discuss with the Lord and his court, they retreated to the Council Chamber. There, the aristocrat tried to persuade the Lord to use your conflict against England and invade your lands.
The Lord, of course, rejected such a ridiculous idea. After half an hour of debate, the aristocrat changed his goal: he now tried to persuade the Lord to invade the Holy Roman Empire or he will be crushed by your forces. The good Lord decided that the guest stayed a bit too long at his home so he made him leave Burgundy in a hurry.
I don't know what this German has against France, but from his conversation I can tell you that he seems to have powerful friends tough I don't know who they are. Be careful my friend.

„An interesting read, but what does this have to do with the Fourth Father? Did he send it?“
„No, it was sent by the King of Burgundy. “
„Burgundy? Looking at what happened later in history, this is a bit hard to believe.“
„It is a fact tough. I compared the handwriting with some letters from that man and this is obviously written by him.“
„Hmm... interesting. So, is the aristocrat maybe that Fourth Father?“
„Maybe... maybe not. For now, remember that this person came from Germany.“
„Maybe the King lied?“
„No, that is the truth. I will leave the proofs to you later on, for now accept it as the truth. Now let me show you something else...“

An excerpt from the personal notes of Henry IV Lancaster:
As I said, there were many people on my coronation. Of course, most of them were invited, but one prominent person was not... the Archbishop of Mainz himself came to my coronation.
If his surprising arrival wasn't weird enough, he asked a lot of questions about the conflict between the English and French nations. I have no idea why Archbishop of Mainz was interested in this war of ours so I carefully replied to his questions, fearing that this man was actually a spy or something.
But what was surprising the most: he wanted to help me. Why would want to do that? I asked him that question and he said that even Kings need to be careful about what they ask and commented on how fortune will be with me if I start a war against France. Before I could ask him anything more, some Welsh nobles came and started a conversation with me. Archbishop of Meinz left us alone and went back to Meinz.
I don't know what he wanted and letters I sent to him went unanswered. But a religious man like me felt that... this man was not a priest, but a demon.

„Yes, I read his diaries. Good King Henry wrote a lot of senseless stuff among his genius texts.“
„Indeed... but do you notice the connection between the two texts?“
„Meinz.“
„Indeed, the very town where we are talking right now. And there is just one more letter I want to show you...“
„Hmm...“ Rosemeier hated to say it, but he was getting interesting, if only a little. Must be the age.

To John I, King of Portugal
I hope your health serves you well, my friend. No, you must not be afraid that I am sending you this because I am bored.
You see my friend, your loyal... informant... saw an very interesting person in Barcelona. At first, I thought he was a priest as he was preaching a Holy Crusade against western Africa. And I can tell you, he was quite loud. I never knew that German accent could be so irritating.
So why was I interested in this fanatic? Because he knew a bit too much. When he started yelling numbers about Muslim soldiers, what happens at their courts, the state of Muslim lands (all of which was probably correct information, as a spy like me can confirm). So I decided to follow him for a bit.
He was traveling south, preaching that crusade... or Reconquista if you want. He did it on both the streets and castles, but rarely slept at a church. Usually, he did it on a street. And I can tell you, that priest knows how to use a sword when thieves appear.
And then he moved to Africa. Now it becomes interesting: he preached a Jihad against Castilla, in the same way he preached a crusade in Christian lands. Interesting, isn't it?
But I didn't allow him to preach too much tough. But when I tried to get information from him, he yelled „For the Fourth Father!!“ and then bit his tongue.
Quite a fanatic there. I hope this information is of some use to you. I am now going to try and find some information about this Fourth Father.
Your loyal Spymaster

„Yes, every child heard about this. After all, this is the source of all the legends about the Fourth Father... especially since it was found out that the spy disappeared soon after it.“
„Do you notice a connection?“
„He was a German priest... do you claim that he came from Meinz?“
„Yes.“
„But why would... a Catholic priest preach to Muslims?“
„If Christians didn't listen to him, then he needed to find another way to start a war, didn't he?“
„Wouldn't this put Christians in danger?“
„Come on, you know history. This is the time when Christian lands started to strengthen while Muslims weakened. And maybe he thought that Christians would win no matter what. He just needed a trigger...“
"The popular theory says that Fourth Father is a demon. Why would a priest be on his side?"
"I never said that I agree with the popular opinion. Actually, I believe that he was a strong Christian you see."
„Hmm... I hate to say it, but I am getting interested in this.“
„Then...“ William returned the fascicle back to Rosemeier. „...please continue reading.“
„Yes, I think I might... lets see what else your imagination created.“
He had no idea why he was wasting time with this. Must be the age.

And this is the first update. As you can see, unlike my first AAR, this one actually has a global story. It also happens in more then few timelines: in the game timelines, in 2010 and in the years when William was researching this legend. I hope oyu find the story interesting.

also, these letters are kinda like Easter Eggs. On the forum where the voting took place, following sceanrios were offered:
- Burgindian Conquest of France (first letter)
- Burgundian Conquest of HRE (first letter)
- English Resistance (Second Letter and the first campaign)
- Consequences of Reconquista (Third Letter)
- Counter-reqonquista (Third Letter)
- Kingdom of God (will be mentioned later on)

With that said, the next update will show us the life of Henry IV Lancaster...

King Henry IV Lancaster
1108a9ef.jpg

(1399-1403)

First Council of Henry IV Lancaster
Date: 16th December 1399 A.D.
Notemaker: Daniel Brook
Attendants:
King Henry IV Lancaster
Prince Henry Lancaster
• Poet Geoffrey Chaucer, summoned to the Royal Council by will of Prince Henry
• Alderman Daniel Cavendish
Richard Brook, newly appointed Grand Captain of English army
• General Robert Knolles, summoned to the Council by Captain Richard Brook
• Lady Elisia Stuart from Scotland, adopted daughter of King Robert III Stuart of Scotland

17e2a836.jpg

Topics of Discussion:

1. Fate of late King Richard II
„Lord“ Geoffrey Chaucer was interested in the fate of Richard II, the late King of England. His majesty, King Henry IV, immediately replied that Richard II is in good health and is spending the remaining days of his life in a villa somewhere in Oxfordshire. Prince Henry commented that he heard that Lord Richard was sick somewhere in dungeons of London, but his father said that it were just some silly rumors. For whatever reason, Captain Richard Brook managed to move the discussion to another topic and King Henry followed. Prince Henry and Geoffrey Chaucer didn't seem satisfied but they didn't complain.

The Late King Richard II

2. Irish Question
Captain Richard Brook was concerned that new recruits in English army lacked experience and General Robert Knolles claimed that using such troops in a future war against France would be suicidal. When King Henry IV asked what they plan to do about it, they suggested an invasion of Ireland. Before King Henry could reply, his son mentioned that the plan sounds good since his friends from Ireland told him about certain plots in that land and that they it might be possible to conquer entire Ireland in a matter of few years and solidify English power in that region.
King Henry said that children should leave politics to their elders and claimed that the plan is not worth the effort. Reconquest of Normandy should be their first priority and told Captain Richard Brook to recruit some veterans if he was concerned about this problem. General Robert Knolles started complaining, but Captain Brook told him to stay silent. General Knolles seemed angered and asked the King permission to leave the Council since he had no more business here, a request that the King gladly granted.

3. Lady Elisia's question
With the suggestion made by general Knolles and Brook being rejected, Lady Elisia, adopted daughter of a Scottish King moved the discussion to her request.
She read a letter from her foster father, Scottish King James III Stuart (it seems that she was adopted by the Scottish King after her noble family died of a certain illness). James Stuart accepted the offer of King Henry Lancaster to merry Elisia to his son Henry and as another sign of friendship, he will break his alliance with the King of France.
Seems that the young Prince was informed of this as he didn't seem surprised at all by this. Elisia however was a different story as she left the Council Room in tears after reading the letter. The topic of marriage was no longer discussed... if this could be called a discussion at all.

e85f82fd.jpg

4. The King and his people
This time, the King himself started the new topic. He asked Lord Geoffrey and Lord David what the people thought about their new King.
Lord David Cavendish started talking about how the people of England, respected and loved their new King and how, silently, they were glad that the old Tyrannic Richard left the throne.
On other hand, Lord Geoffrey wasn't nearly as pleasant as Lord Cavendish. He said that „Ser“ David either lied or was blind so he said a load of bullshit. He claimed that the people were not sure if Lord Henry's actions were rightful and many soldiers weren't as loyal as they were during Lord Richard's reign. However, he mentioned that the situation could have been worse and that time will probably make people trust the new King more. However, the nobility was a different story: the centralization King Henry enacted left many Lords frightened.
For whatever reason, the King seems to have liked Geoffrey's reply more then David's and asked him (as a friend) to visit some of those nobles with Prince Henry and try to change the situation there. Lord Geoffrey and Prince Henry didn't seems happy about this, but they didn't complain.

5. The Gascon Question
Prince Henry then asked about the situation in Aquitaine. The King seemed confused about the question and the Captain Richard Brook seems to have gone pale. The King noticed that and asked Lord Brook why he became pale. Lord Richard said that he wanted to leave this discussion for a private discussion but Prince Henry seemed to interested to let him go easily so he commanded him to speak.
It seems that a bunch of drunken English soldiers in one of English towns in Aquitaine ended up in a fighting a certain tavern... the fight that they lost. Drunk as they were, they took out their weapons and started killing everyone in the tavern. This caused a fear in citizens and a revolt was started in the town. The revolt was crushed, but the rest of Gascon people got news of this event and French King immediately became popular.
The next thirty minutes were filled with King yelling around, Captain Richard apologizing and Lord Geoffrey smiling. Lord Cavendish stayed silent and just drank his wine.

976dd0d1.jpg

6. Guest from Hansa
The yelling and apologizing stopped when a Hanseatic emissary appeared in the Council room. The atmosphere calmed down and the King, Hanseatic Emissary and David Cavendish (the Drunk) discussed an offer from the Hansa. The discussion that should have been serious was made entertaining because of Lord Cavendish so that even Captain Brook smiled.
To make the (very) long story short, Hansa offered to build various trade stations through England in coming years and King Henry, ignoring the wise advice of Lord Cavendish to send the Hanseatic emissary and his offer as a gift to Scottish King James Stuart, accepted the offer.

d186bb6b.jpg

The Council was then dismissed.

William's notes: who... is this Daniel Brook? This obviously isn't an official document (just look at the style) and a man called Daniel Brook never seemed to have existed... and neither were notes like these made at that time. My guess is that this is a spy... but was he hiding there or could it have been one of the attendants? This certainly IS made by some kind of spy.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To His Majesty, Henry IV Lancaster, King of England and France, Lord of Ireland
No my Liege, you do not need to remind me that you and I are not in good relations and that I am here just because you need me alive. And yes, I know that King Richard wasn't too fond of me either.
But the money you are giving me for your dirty works is miserable and not even a good compensation for treats you send me regularly. If you don't need me, then freely get rid of me. Until then I with the tone I feel fits the situation.
Lord Geoffrey Chaucer

William's Note: Interesting... this handwriting doesn't fit the handwriting of his other works (being a poet, he wrote a lot) and neither does it fit the one who made those notes during the Council. His personality doesn't seem to fit him either and judging by this and few other letters, Henry must have been oblivious. Andrei will be interested in this...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To my Friend, Lord Robert Knolles
I am sorry for what happened at the council and I saw surprised to hear that you were dispatched to Gascogne. I hope that you will return to England soon.
But this is not the reason why I write you so suddenly. You see, while the King didn't like your plan, Prince Henry was interested. Like you, he also has some enemies and friends in Ireland and wants to change the situation there. After some talk with him, I learned more about the nobility of Ireland then I found out that he has many friends there (at least far more then you and me) and we were already making the invasion plans. Stay patient my friend, your... no, our vengeance is nearing.
Your friend, Richard Brook

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Excerpt from personal Diary of Elisia Stuart
I don't know why I cried... it is not like I wasn't knowing what the contents of the letter would be. But it feels so... painful to read it in front of all those people, especially in front of the infamous King and his son who was 13 yet he had wounds from battles on his face. I think... I fear entering this family.
No... I must not be afraid... I must not cry! I owe it to my King... I mean, my father. He saved me, a noble just a bit beyond a common peasant, from a terrible fate and I owe him at least this much. I don't know what awaits me in years to come... but I will prevail in name of my King... Father I mean...

Jean-antoins: How to break a plot

To Henry IV Lancaster of England
While I don't feel you should be trusted (with what happened to Richard and all), my advisors made me accept your... „irresistible“ offer of a military alliance.
However, your plan is quite risky for me so let me warn you: break our agreement in any way and I will take care you no longer care about France, that I promise you.

Our beloved King's words
YES!! When I said write everything, I meant write every one of the words I yell at you! I am the King of Great Francisca, am I not?! Oh? You say I am the King of France. Well, thats all right as well I guess...
Anyway, back on topic! What was the topic again... ah yes...
TREACHERY!! TREACHERY!! I always knew Henry was a son of a... what was the word again... ah well, nevermind... I always knew that Henry of Ireland... All right, England... was not a nice guy, especially after killing the kind, old Richard... I miss Richard... or was it Oliver...and his son Henry is not much better either... wait, how can he be his own son? That man is a lunatic, there is no other explanation... well, that explains why he wants to attack my beloved Franci... France... he is a lunatic!
So is Phillipe of Burgundy also a lunatic? Well, he also always plotted and cooked something against me... probably spaghetti... I hate spaghetti... and he hates me... it all makes sense now!
Jean-antoins... now thats a true and sane man! If not for him, I would have thought that Philip was cooking Spaghetti against me. But that not true. No, no... he cooked it together with Henry of England... twice with man actually... and with Charles of Lorraine... why would I cook Spagheti? I hate th... oh, that is not me? Then who am I anyway? Oh, you said I forgot to mention that Stuart James? Yes, I always thought that man was friend but nooo...

Jean-antoins
By Andrei Drake, 5th November 2013

Jean-antoins was a commoner born in Paris. Altough he was a commoner, he had quite an interesting and rich life.
First, he joined the church and tried to become a priest. He learned there how to write there but was forced to flee to Germany when it was revealed that he had an affair with a woman.
He spent few years barely managing to stay alive when a wealthy merchant hired him to educate his bastard son (it is unknown who this was and where as, because of respect, Jean didn't want to reveal their names in his memoirs).
So he was a tutor for next nine years and became a friend with that bastard child. When the boy's father died, Jean took over the role of the father and took care that the boy not just survives, but also becomes accepted as a legitimate son. Jean-antoins confessed in his memoirs that he used various immoral methods to accomplish his goals.
Even tough „The Bastard Son“ didn't need a tutor any more, he and Jean-antoins remained close friends and Jean-antoins did many dirty jobs for him. While he didn't do such jobs for long, Jean-antoins claims to have learnt a lot about information-gathering, assassinations, manipulations and other infamous skills.
Not even five years passed when Jean-antoins decided to leave. The reason was simple: Jean-antoins became too infamous and his presence started endangering those around him.
Thus he left for France (he claims that this was the fourth time he changed his name). His knowledge of economy soon brought him to the position of the Royal Treasurer. However, he also served as a spymaster and was the one who found out about the plot made by Henry IV of England, James III of Scotland and Philip the Bold of Burgundy. He also became a close friend of the French King... a title he was not so fond of...

Excerpt from memoirs of Jean-antoins
I immediately regretted my decision to tell the King about the plot against him. I am not sure if he was shocked to find out about the plot... or happy that someone was kind enough to tell him about it. Anyway, he ended up in coma soon after that, I heard. I should have remained a simple treasurer...
Anyway, the King didn't want anyone else to hear about this plot so he asked me to take care of it.
First, we will need to teach some noble houses a lesson and bribe the others. Philip the Bold and Charles II of Lorraine invested quite a sum in bribing our nobles to stand on their side when Anglo-Burgundian army enters Paris to remove the Mad King from the throne. However, only simple treasurers need to worry about how much money they can spend. And I was not a simple treasurer.
However, the best way to break a plot is to... do something unexpected.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To James III Stuart, King of Scots
You are quite daring, „King of Scots“. Now, I don't have anything against „The Daring People“, but such an approach can sometimes prove to be... fatal.
Do not think I don't know certain dirty secrets about your ancestors. Does word „Robert“ ring a bell? I suppose it does.it would be quite problematic if all of this was revealed to some people. Actually, England may pay you a visit... with their armies.
But maybe that information can stay locked in a certain chest somewhere in my bedroom? Maybe... if you told me details about the „Plot“ and if you were not feeling well and would not go into a war against us when the time comes? If we stay allied and your armies „visit“ Henry's lands when the time comes, a certain piece of paper may even end up getting burned.
I await your reply. But please, don't address it to me. Instead, address it to my treasurer Jean-antoins and he will forward it to me.
Your friend, Charles VI, King of France

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To Jean-antoins
„Your Majesty“ told me to address this letter to you so I ask you to... give it to him.
I don't know how you got that certain piece of information, but I guess I have no choice to comply to your first two conditions. However, I must reject the third condition as Henry Lancaster is too cautious and an invasion of England would end up in a failure.
And to be honest, I can't really tell you much about „The Plot“ as I am just a minor player here. The entire plan is kept secret by Henry Lancaster, Philip and Charles of Lorraine. I even asked my daughter Elisia to find out more, but I am afraid that the young Henry spends too much time with her... enough to make me believe that she would not tell me anything even if she knew about it.
So... have a nice day, Ruler of France...
Stuart

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Excerpt from personal Diary of Elisia Stuart
These last few days were TERRIBLE! If not for the dear Henry, I might have been dead by now!
I don't think I will ever again be able to walk the streets of London... even with a whole army of guards!
Three days ago, me and my guards were assaulted by some thugs. The guards were killed and I was taken away. They put a sack on my head so I didn't see where we were going, but I felt we were running through London... and we didn't run far.
When the thugs brought me to their hideout, I was beaten for no reason at all! Barbarians!
They even intended to rape me, but then some French speaking man called Antonio came. At first, I thought he was a knight that came to save me, but he was wearing no armor, didn't look like some noble and neither was he an enemy of the thugs. However, his French was fluent and he had some kind of aura around him that made it clear that he might have been a King in a different life.
He asked me many questions, similar to ones my father asked me in his letter. While I didn't know much about all of this when my father asked me, I knew more when Antonio asked me and I answered all of his questions, tough I don't think either of it was important. Then he left and ordered the thugs to keep me locked in case he would need to use me later. He also ordered them to give me royal treatment or they would get they heads handed to them.
Two nights passed until my Henry came and rescued me. If not for him... ah look at what I wrote here. This is not how the Queen should act. I'll need to harden myself if I am to be Henry's Queen. This is the last time I cry for something, I promise...

An excerpt from the book „On Our Wars with France“ by Henry V Lancaster
It was by pure luck that I found the place where Elisia wsa taken. While I don't think anything terrible would have happened to her if I came few days later on, I am still grateful I came sooner rather then later. When we came back to the castle, she immediately left for her room and I decided to leave her alone for the time being. God knows how she felt these days...
But what is important was what she told me on our way back. Back then I had no idea who Antonio was, but the description Elisia gave me fits Jean-antoins, treasurer in service of the French King. Some of my informants from France revelaed to me that this „treasurer“ was more then it meets the eye: he was the actual power that rulled France and the only man who was able to control the Rabbid King of France.
Even then, when I knew so little about this man, I felt that he was far more dangerous then the entire French army...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Henry Lancaster of England, Fourth of His name (from „The Memoirs of Jean-antoins)
On 2nd February 1401, I was in Kent, looking to find a ship to return to France. On the same day, the King of England came to Kent with his army that was meant to attack France.
Being interested in this man, I joined his army as Volean de Courio, a traveling poet. While I was not the best poet, I irritated Geoffrey Chaucer so the King kept me near himself in order to keep Geoffrey Chaucer away. As we were traveling through the town, the King asked me what the people thought of me. I don't remember what I said, but the King was angered and decided to complain to his own people. He started talking in French and when he noticed that nobody understood a word he said, he started talking in English.
At first, he yelled at them because he was angered, but soon in became one of those „Legendary Speeches“ that touch your heart and other bullshit. The people, both the nobles and townsfolk, were touched by that speech and everybody seems to love thrir King now. That was as frightening to me as his army was.

The journey on the sea was not long, but me and King spent a long time conversing with one another. The King and the Poet Volean de Courio became friends. Of course, Volean was a lie and Jean-antoins still considered him an enemy. This friendship will be the poor fool's demise...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Excerpt from memoirs of Jean-antoins
So the plot was broken nicely.
While James Stuart didn't give me much more information, the fact that he gave me some was enough to hit the enemy with a considerable force. When he found out from me that Elisia was lying to him, he started distrusting her so England and Scotland returned to being nemesis to one another.
And then came the sudden attack on Lorraine by the French King. The allied armies were forced to enter the war instead of taking over diplomatically and to make the matters worse, they had no allies in France. They will need to shed blood to get what they want... no, what ENGLAND wants.
True, this will not save France but... that was no longer my goal at that time time anyway. My ambitions lied elsewhere and those ambitions I will manage to achieve.

Reconquest of Normandy: Part 1

Finally, on 5th July 1401, 17 000 English Soldiers under the lead of King Henry IV Lancaster entered Ile-de-France from Burgundian province of Cambray and soon put up a siege on Paris. Since Burgundian armies were swarming al around France, it took French armies some time to attack Henry's forces in order to lift the siege. However, the English soldiers were well supplied by Cambray so they easily defeated the French armies and held siege until 4th February 1402 when the city surrendered and Henry IV Lancaster entered the city that was supposed to belong to him.

While Henry Lancaster was besieging Paris, General Robert Knolles and his 10 000 English soldiers were fighting France and its vassals in Aquitaine. Not wanting to be only the defender of Aquitaine, Robert Knolles divided his armies into two: the infantry (6 000) was sent siege Bearn while he and his cavalry (4 000) defended Gascogny and Labourd.

Still tough, Robert Knolles was the first man to enter the capital of Baern and greet the Count of Foix in his own castle as the other French vassals decided to change their approach from offense to defense so Robert and his cavalry joined the siege. When the Siege of Armaganac started, Robert Knolles decided to use the same approach.
Back to the North, Henry Lancaster wasn't able to enjoy his stay in Paris for long as the Burgundian armies in Northern France were defeated and Jeanne II le Meingre, was leading French armies (instead of the Mad King Charles VI) and sieging northern Burgindian provinces. Henry Lancaster made his way through Burgundy and left the Burgundian Duke guard Paris from French armies. However, the Duke soon took his armies and went somewhere else, either to defend his lands or to invade another French territory. Thus, Paris was left with little defense.
Henry Lancaster soon confronted Jean le Meingre and fought with him in Picardie. The battles lasted for 10 days until French armies retreated to Normandy. From March 1402 and until February 1403, the rest of the war will be known as „Battles of Normandie“. This is an infamous period of the war in which English and French armies fought in every yard of Narmandie, Caux and Ile-de-France. It is said that no village in those three regions was left unscathed. To make the matters worse for English, the Dukes of Lorraine and Burgundy signed peace with France and left the war. For some reason, Count of Armaganac was not satisfied with this and declared independence and soon made peace with England.

In February 1403, Henry Lancaster of England and Charles de Valois of France confronted each other in front of Paris. While Henry Lancaster did win he was wounded in battle and the command went to Captain Richard Brook. Since English forces were weakened and their morale depleted, he retreated through Burgindian lands into English fortress of Calais and Charles de Valois besieged Paris once again and it looked like all English sacrifices would have been for naught.
However, Henry's son Henry V Lancaster took over the throne before his father's death and immediately continued the war against France.
Henry IV Lancaster died on 4th July 1403 in Calais, not from wounds but from an assassin's dagger.

Excerpt from memoars of Jean-antoins
While English thought that they surprised us by attacking Paris from Cambray, it all went as I expected and planned. Yes, even the Fall of Paris into English hands was part of my plans.
What was my goal? Simple: make English over-confident in their abilities and make them spend more time defending Paris from us then conquering Normandie (in case they took Normandie first, they would have made a stronger base in France and thus their position would have been better, something I wanted to avoid). After some time, their troops would weaken and French armies would have achieved victory.
But the problem came from southern regions in form of General Robert Knolles. In my plans, he would spend his 10 000 men either defending Gascogny and Labadourd or, if we are lucky, he would invade some neighboring region and the vassals of France would attack Aquitaine and then crush Robert's armies.
So when Robert Knolles invaded Bearn, I thought he took the 2nd option. But he surprised us all when it ended up that eh created himself a third option: use infantry to siege the southernmost region of France and in case English territories were invaded, he would leave with his cavalry and crush our forces.
That already put our plans in jeopardy. While at first it may look like the armies he destroyed would not have made difference, they made a huge difference. Lets say that those armies were not destroyed by him. Where would they go? They would have joined the main French force and those few thousands more men would have brought us victory in Normandie and England would have lost the war. In other words,he was already responsible for out future defeat.
And if that wasn't enough, the victories of Robert Knolles made the King of Aragon join the war on English side and attack southeastern French territories. This was not a small force and France was forced to further split its forces.
In short, Robert Knolles screwed us up.

Excerpt (Epilogue) from the novel „Henry of England“ written by Arnold William Neuman
Another Battle of Paris was over and French armies once again cowardly retreated.
However, Henry Lancaster does not remember anything that happened. His mind was broken from all the battles and the experience he gained in those battles is why he knows how the battle went. After all, they were all the same.
He looked around. He was riding through gates of Paris, just like he did a year ago. But this time, the atmosphere was different: instead of a prideful entrance, he and his men looked broken, like they lost a battle, not won it.
He looked towards the people around him. Most of them were French peasants who took refugee in Paris because their turfs have been destroyed by English and French armies. They were probably even more broken then Henry and his men. Their eyes blamed him.
„THE KING IS WOUNDED!!!“ he hard Richard Brook yell behind him. Henry then felt some pain on his stomach. There was a really a wound.
He hated Brook for making him realize that there was another pain he had to feel. The King then lost consciousness and fell from his horse.
***
The King opened his eyes. It was dawn and he was in Calais, far away from Paris.
„How are you feeling, my Lord?“
Henry turned his head towards the window from where the voice came. Volean de Courio, a Poet and Friend he met in Kent two years ago, was sitting there. The King tried to smile but he failed so only words came out: „I saw better days. What are doing here? I thought you went to Genoa.“
„Something came up so I spent these two years in France. When I heard you got wounded, I hurried up here.“
„Oh... well, how nice of you.“
„They told me your wounds healed but your face tells me otherwise.“
„Well, I guess that my wounds did get healed, but I am afraid that I can't say the same for my mind. I spent this whole year fighting battles from Normandy to Paris. Even now I fight in those battles... in my dreams, but they feel so real... sometimes even more real then the real ones...“
„I feared this would have happened.“ Volean walked towards the King. „Actually, thats a lie.“
The King was surprised when he saw his friend making a smile... a smile a little boy would make before he would bully someone younger then him.
„Wha...“ The King could not finish his sentence as the dagger penetrated his heart.
„Farewell, Henry of England.“ The man he thought was his friend told him.
The World around him went black... and fortunately, no dreams came and Henry finally found his peace.
