Very nice thread indeed.

Great AAR. Gives me the idea of doing a "Power isn't everything" AAR of using nothing but pure INF divisions.

Thank you Qitbuqa and Shibito. Still planning to continue with this AAR but the Soviets do not surrender in Lithuanian AAR that easy.

I think, Shibito, there were 1 or 2 AARs with MIL divisions only :)

There were a fun Cav only AAR, sadly it failed because that version of HoI send all Soviet divisions to fight the Finns.

Very good AAR. I also read your Poland AAR. I'm going to try to use your level of planning for my invasion of the SU. I will use more units though hehe :p, as I already conquered Romania, all of Poland and the Baltic countries so I have a much larger border. The Soviets have over 2000 Brigades, most of which are at my border. However they are not mobilized, each division only has like 3000 men out of some 10000 it should have. If all goes well the SU will surrender within 2 months. My plan is to destroy enough Soviet divisions within 2-3 weeks(before they can fully mobilize) so that the rest of the invasion will be easier. The Soviets don't have enough manpower atm to mobilize all of their divisions. I could probably get far with the units I have at the border now(1 division per border province), but I would stall after their divisions would fully mobilize, and also I love a greater challenge.

:) I have to find that one. I wouldn't try probably only Garrisons as it would take ages for them to move around and no encirclements almost guaranteed :)

2 months I think is really challenging. Delays could be quite long and if you don't take Vladivostok you would require to take everything between Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Stalingrad and Baki.

Been a while since you updated, but I really like all your AARs; I can only hope to do as well (if I ever sit down and play HOI )

This is a very entertaining and instructive AAR - and your inset maps on the screen shots both look great and convey the situation in detail. Thanks for the work of putting this together!

Completely agree - your graphics really bring this AAR to life, adding to what is already a really entertaining report. thanks for all the hard work

ps what are you using to host the graphics?

awesome AAR. Consider yourself subbed!

Welcome Hearth! :) Thank you for your appreciation :)

I am currently hooked on Lithuanian campaign but this one is not dead yet. I will definitely come back.

Thank you Whiskysoup :) I am using Imageshack. I am really happy with it so far. No annoying bandwidth problems ;)

How did you change the picture?

In this particular case I have edited a screen picture. However, there should be picture files in the graphics directory where you can change pictures.

Fall Richard – Preparations and First Two Weeks

An army group of 193.000 soldiers is allocated for the operation. It is a significant force. There are two reasons why the force is just 51% smaller than in the Fall Gelb. First, Germans have no idea what Allied forces are in the region. Canadians, Americans, British, South Africans and Belgians were noticed. Second, the most important reason is that Spain is big, National Unity is 99% and there are 13 objectives to capture and keep.

The 5. Armee is for the initial breakthrough. 21 Waffen-SS Geb. 8. Marine-sturm divisions are for crossing Ebro River. 13. Waffen-SS Geb. and 188. Geb divisions are for armoured fighting in hills and mountains. British keep significant number of armoured divisions in the Pyrenees.

The 1. Armee is for the capture of the rest of Spain and destroying of the Allied army in the planned pocket (see map). Engineer with tanks and mechanised regiments will help to capture cities and move through mountainous terrain. The X. Panzercorps (Tiger) is for holding strategic points and for attacking in plains if necessary in support of main offensives.

Luftwaffe provided 800 fighters (300 multirole), 1800 bombers (600 strategic) and 100 transports. Multiroles are for securing airspace over Madrid and for escorting transport planes. Strategic bombers are for reconnaissance and decreasing of Spanish unity. Luftwaffe main airbase is in Bordeaux which is supplied by sea.

The offensive

On 26 January 1942, the offensive began with an attack on Irun which is based in hilly terrain. Armoured mountaineers proved to be a success. Due to combined arms, the efficiency of the armoured mountaineers in hills was a bit higher than plain mountaineers.

Just two days later, the Allies were defeated at Irun. However, a pinning attack on Pamplona failed and had to be cancelled on 30 January 1942. The allies immediately commenced a counter-attack on Irun but after very heavy fighting the Allies retreated.

Aerial fighting was intensive during the first two weeks. British CAGs and Spanish bombers mauled the attacking army but Luftwaffe responded with the same.

Case Richard (Fall Richard) – The Third and Forth Weeks

Following unsuccessful allied counter-attack at Irun exhausted divisions were unable to defend San Sebastian and were quickly pushed out of there. That opened the door to Bilbao.

On 13 February 1942, weakened Canadian and Spanish divisions were quickly overwhelmed.

On 14 February 1942, following the bloodiest battle of the campaign, mountainous Pamplona was captured. At the same time an attempt to attack mountains across a river utterly failed at Guipuzcoa.

On 17 February 1942, the last border province was captured. At the same time and attack on Taffala was commenced in an attempt to cross Ebor River.

On 18 February 1942, following two battles, Vitoria was at last taken. It was one more province at Ebor River but this time the opposite bank had plains which should be much easier to cross.

On 19 February 1942, the Allies were at last defeated at Taffala. Hours later beaten up Canadians could not hold Villarcayo and surrendered the town to German panzers.

On 22 February 1942, just in three days the panzers reached the river Arlanzon.

By 23 February 1942, German division crossed Ebro River in numerous places and the race towards objectives began. Fast mechanised and some armoured divisions were ordered to deal with the task while the remaining divisions were ordered to surround and destroy a bulk of Allied forces at Estella and Logrono.

While armoured mountaineers proved to be very successful in hills, their usefulness in mountains is not clear. The 30% difference from a pure mountaineer division warrant the use of armoured mountaineers only if defenders have armoured divisions.
