If So, Can you bomb into dust, with the chance of actually making it barren or radioactive.

Or Uusing bio weapons that make it a toxic hell.

You can't make them uninhabitable. Best you can do is rough them up, then send your troops in to purge the inhabitants.

The devs have hinted that superweapons might be coming in an expansion/DLC, though.

So you can never wipe a planet clean of life. Come on Paradox you are the company of strategy options and complexity. Obital bombardment of a planet with different weapon types that can change a biome is right up your alley.

Again, why would you do this? With terraforming in the late game and habitable worlds at a premium why would you want to reduce valuable assets like this? I can understand bombing the previous inhabitants off the world but rending the planet lifeless just seems like a self-limiting option.

So, as before, I don't understand.

So, as before, I don't understand.

Because its less head ache and some times you just want to be a dick and punish people, History has tons of examples of of razing of cities and sowing the fields with salt. Also using to many nukes on a planet would absolutly wreck it as would bioweapons.

Terraforming is moot, it would make it more expensive to collonize and that could be the point.

Also it adds to diplomacy, makes it harder to form lasting friendships but any threats you give carry weight.

I can see the potential for razing a planet. If it is too far away for you to occupy the best thing may be to destroy it. I would imagine news getting out of an empire destroying a planet would quickly turn you into enemy number one.

Sometimes I might feel so high and mighty that an alien world doesn't deserve my presence.
'That's a nice lush fertile world teeming with life you got there, but I think it would look nicer as a lifeless desert, or a collection of small rocks orbiting the sun.'

I would like to be able to do this. It's something we've seen in science fiction many times, and as a gameplay mechanic it could be very interesting.

Considering how rare habitable worlds are in the galaxy, wiping one out would be a huge deal and something that the other empires will hate you for. On the other hand, it might be the only way to deal with a viral pandemic or a Tyranid invasion force that's gotten out of control.

Scorched earth strategie, to destroy territory your are going to abandon, maybe if you know you couldn't hold it for long.
Oh, I understand the strategy and like @Toddd240 recognize it as a trope I'll likely even use at times. Still, it's one thing to scorch the earth (Soviet style)- remove factories, burn crops, etc - and another to salt and irradiate the earth (SciFi style).

However, the game does have "tombworlds"...guess we're just adding to that type.

Oh, I understand the strategy and like @Toddd240 recognize it as a trope I'll likely even use at times. Still, it's one thing to scorch the earth (Soviet style)- remove factories, burn crops, etc - and another to salt and irradiate the earth (SciFi style).

However, the game does have "tombworlds"...guess we're just adding to that type.

It should be very difficult to tomb a world, but the ability should exist. Like has been posted, planet killers are coming in a DLC.

You should be able to scour planets of life (maybe turning them into a tomb world), but only if it's reversible with effort.

Like Reach from the Halo series: the Covenant glassed the surface and murdered everyone and everything. However the UNSC eventually retook the planet and terraformed it to be beautiful again.

Exactly.

Additionaly, it could give you a boost for your warscore (like the reduced national integrity in hoi) and give you a negative opinion modificator for your enemy and all the species that are in contact with you.

It would be kinda cool if each "living" planet had a health bar, and if you fought too hard over it the planet would basically die and become barren. The habitability of the planet might also be affected if the bar gets too low and it then needs time to regenerate.
