In response to such blatant german gamey strategy, I recall the last game I used nukes. Version 1.05c, playing the USA, I invaded Italy from Sicily and marched rapidly up the boot to the german border. My 18 mech divisions so saw 175 divisions facing them accross the Alps. I made a fighting withdraw all the way back to Sicily. By that time I had 43 divisions (arm/mech/mtn/inf) looking across the straits to a steadily building German army. In 1945, when it topped out at 643 divisions(about 80% of their entire army) I quietly dropped a nuke on them. The game was a cakewalk after that. Now, I use the policy of 'ban the nukes.'

643 out of about 803.75 German divisions, all in Italy....

First off, where were the Soviets in all this?

Second...I've never even seen any country with HALF as many divisions. I couldn't nuke that many if I tried!

P.S. Is there a way to "ban the nukes" for the AI as well? Like with Civ2, I prefer playing without.

Well I come not even close the highest amount of divisions nuked was 156, turned the war in Germany favor. As Axis US I saw these troops in the middle of nowhere marching towards the front, seeing how the Germans were in enough trouble, I pressed the button It was kind of gratifying to help out an ally.

The most I got from a human was even more 243 I believe. On a 3 way game (Germany and US(AI US) allies) and Russia and Britain apart of there alliance. Seeing how I was pretty safe with my Island and enormous navy and Airforce I just destroyed as much IC strat bombing because my infantry sucked and I had to hope he would lose against Russia (which seemed very unlikely). Anyway he had Military control of the Balkans and nothing to do with it he constantly bitched about them. Coming from another bombing run I see 200 plus divisions in Muncas, I check 3 more times and decide to use my only primitive nuke. 243 Balkan divisions destroyed not one German. It was 1946 and the Balkans mafe

Yeah its easy to make it so there are no nukes. Go in to the tech file and just up the days for get the detonator tech something like 2000 days and you will not see nukes used.

A better solution would be to remove the Nuclear tech ids from the AI files of the majors. That way the AI doesn't waste its ICs trying to develop them.

What mod has the German flag set as the swastica? Is it a CORE thing? I've never seen this before.

I don't know if I am allowed to give a download-link here, so just PM the moderator.

It works with every version, you just have to copy the edited bmp-file into the flags folder.
It doesn't change the game, but I wouldn't wanna live without authentic flags. The real japanese flag is also available.

The swastica flag makes the Germans much more evil and terrifying. I want to fight Nazis not Kaiser Wilhelm II.!

However it's a good idea of Paradox not to use the flag officially, or else the game wouldn't only be banned in China...

-----------------------------------

Another thing I noticed in my current game.
The Russians were ahead on land techs, but their org was only about 90 (mine was 115).
Even the mechs fought like chinese militia after the nuke.

Since 1.06 the Russians are normally tough bastards, scared of nukes?

What's the deal with their airforce? They were worse than Italians...

And one last question:
It's common opinion that Russia doesn't build tanks. Well, they do. They often have some 10 tanks which disappear weeks later and seem to turn into mechs...
Is this a bug? I thought it was just an a.i. issue, but they do build tanks. I think on my picture you can even see a IS-2 tank!

The Soviets were having a phoney war along the lines of Leningrad-Moscow-Stalingrad-Grozny. There seemed to be alot of minors in Russia(Rumania,Finland,Sweden,Hungary,Czechs(turned Axis after Sudentenland),Spanish, and Italian-Exp.forces. The Soviets and Germans had gone to peace 3 times! along that same front(CORE event I think).

I like the idea of banning nukes as well. It can add to challenge if only the AI has them though.

While the nuking of 600 divisions is a genuinely impressive feat, it sort of illustrates what is wrong with nukes in HoI. You see, the nuclear bomb used in Hiroshima just leveled the city, not the all the land around. If there were 500+ divisions in a province, they would not all be milling around in the city, would they? So I think a nuke should just destroy a large number of divisions, not all the armies in the province. Just my thought. :)

It's true that RL-nukes would not be so effective against military targets as it is against civilian targets. Against naval forces it's something else, though.

On the ground, nukes were tactically not very effective before the neuteron bomb... It's not an explosion it's a fusion, but radiation will kill all humans on the ground, inside tanks etc. It's not a quick death, however... :( Tactical nukes came much later than WW2. But they would wipe out divisions I guess. A nation relaying on the terrorbombing doctrine would not target the military, though... as history taught us.
