After reading the Dev Diary regarding Heavy Submarines, I was wondering how Nuclear Submarines would be modeled in-game, and if SSBNs would make an appearance. Seeing as these vessels triggered a paradigm shift in naval warfare, one would hope that these types of vessels would be modeled more or less correctly. Just thought I'd put that out there, kind of tired of putting together nuclear wolfpacks as Germany in the 50s and having them sunk as easily as if they were wheezy little diesel subs from the 30s. :rolleyes:

I just hope they fixed them so they aren't anymore capital ships but are submarines like the normal submarines.

Another thing to remember is that there are no less then four possible types of different weapons unlocked by nuclear technology in the submarine field during the cold war era.

1.) Nuclear reactors
Unlock nuclear propulsion (SSN) giving submarines 10 times as long range, much greater underwaterspeed and making them harder to detect by sonar when at the surface.
First historical one would be USS Nautilus ready for service in 1954.

2.) Nuclear torpedoes
A standard torpedo with a nuclear warhead giving even normal diesel submarines the capability to reliably sink a carrier or many convoys ship with a single torpedo. Greatly increasing the firepower of each submarine.
Historically available around 1955 when warheads become small enough to fit inside standard torpedoes. Earlier for modified subs.

3.) Nuclear mines
Dropped from submarines sneaking into enemy naval bases these could potentially close off an entire port for a long time due to radioactive fallout and blast damage.
Available almost as soon as nukes are due to their simplicity.

4.) Nuclear warhead missiles.
Large enough to only be carried by nuclear submarines or very large disel ones this is to deliver nukes at medium or long distances.
Regulus 1953 (900km range)
Polaris 1960 (1800km range)

It just seems like there would be no real reason to fear nuclear détente without the possibility of enemy SSBNs lying in wait above the arctic circle to enact their vengeance for a nuclear attack upon their country. Plus it would justify building a full blown nuclear triad in a cold war situation.

...Obviously MIRVs will be right out, that's just stupidly excessive in gameplay terms.

If its not going to be there upon release, that's A-OK by me. I'm still very impressed with what Paradox had done for us HOI2 fans to make up for HOI3 (that was such a disappointment, I tried excruciatingly hard to like that game). That being said is it possible to mod that sort of thing into the game? Limit the war load to maybe 5 weak nuclear warheads at a time, enough to be very dangerous, but not so much as to be game ending?

I don't think they will be able to put that feature in the game..If you want to launch nukes from submarines, you have to play SR2020:)

...Is SR2020 any good? I didn't particularly like its predecessor, too much going on that wasn't adequately explained or documented, full of horrid bugs, etc.

However, considering that the AoD tech tree is going to see further expansion, what can we expect in a late game? I would love to see a late game dev diary.

Yes they can, the have almost unlimited access to the game engine and tools for changing the game core, unlike ordinary modders. And Alex post says a lot as well.
