I can barely wait for the announcement. I have been waiting for this game for years and now that HOI4 is finally released, I just know the Victoria franchise is the next in line to get a new version. It is indeed the next game in Paradox's mind, I'm pretty sure. Definitely looking forward to seeing how they decide to make it, let's hope it'll be as good as Hearts of Iron IV; if not even better. VIctoria 2 as it stands probably isn't the easiest Paradox game to learn and I think if they get some nice tutorials in and "simplify" it a little bit to make it easier for new-comers to learn it will definitely be a big hit with players new to the whole grand strategy franchise.

Although, first of all we'll probably be seeing a bunch of DLC coming out for Hearts of Iron IV, seeing as there already is an expansion pass that you could buy or that you would get with the FIeld Marshal pre-order edition, and it'll probably be a year or so until we see the announcement. But I am positive that this is the next big grand strategy game Paradox is going to come out with. Gonna be interesting to see how well they manage to do it, don't disappoint us Paradox, we're counting on you ;)

Having tried HOI4 (friend bought it and hated it) and shelving it after about 10 hours I'm not so excited about Vic3 anymore especially if Podcat is leading the design. I agree that they will focus on 2-3 DLCs for HOI4 to bring it up to playable. Given the design choices going into HOI4 I can't image what Victoria for the masses would look like.

On the plus side, Victoria 2 is honestly the only Paradox game i've played where the interface actually is bad and could do with altering, which is what their focus has been with their recent games ("streamlining").
Having to change between 3 different map modes to work out province production, the awful trade screen interface, and how hard it is to find specific cores on the map. Gah.

I don't quite agree with you here, as before playing Vicky, I hadn't played a single paradox. I learnt the game within a day.

I learned the game mechanics in a day; actually learning the interaction, the strategy, and the limits on how those game mechanics is an ugly steep curve.

Well in my opinion they could make it a bit more approachable for everyone to get into it, but I agree that it should still provide a good challange.

Think about this.

Paradox bought Whitewolf for all their RPG content, they are maintaining EU4, CK2, Stellaris, and HOI4 and making DLCs for those, they probably are working on an EU5, and Victoria is among their least popular games.

They have a lot of stuff on their plate at this point and they just opened an IPO so are going to be beholden to whims of shareholders.

IMO the chance of Victoria 3 is low. I would hope for Victoria type content to maybe be in EU5 with HOI4 having a WW1 expansion but i'm thinking it's going the way of Rome at this point. That recent Vic 2 patch was a side project of people working for them, that is how little they care about Victoria. It's an abandoned franchise.

Considering we just got a new beta patch for Vicky 2, it seems like wild hyperbole to say Paradox has abandoned the franchise. Side project yes, but done by people who work for them, as you say. They could be the "internal champions" needed. If anything, outside investment capital makes it easier for Paradox to start on Vicky 3 sooner.

They have however continuously stated that they would like to do Vic 3 - but are lacking passionate and/or available designers for that game. Victoria was also the last game done in the old Clausewitz engine, which is probably the reason why it didn't get more expansions (like CKII). CKI was a huge blow sales-wise and it still got a sequel, which turned out to be much more sucessful, I don't think they're staying away from making Vic 3 just because of the potential risk. White Wolf runs as a seperate company and will most likely not influence the work of PDX Dev Studio. Just take a look at the recent AMA with Fred, where he speaks about this.

The IPO was just 15% (I think), the largest shareholder is that Chinese company (5-10%?), Fred + the investment company (whose name I forgot) still hold a huge majority, I doubt this will have a huge impact on the work of PDX.

A new grand strategy IP has to be a new Antiquity game or Vic 3. I'm still hoping for the latter; Vic 2 is a great game, but it comes with huge flaws unfortunately, mainly many missing QoL-features, which make the late game really exhausting.
