Novgorod and the GH

I'm playing a game starting in 1399 as Novgorod, I've united Tver and Yaroslav and Muscowy. The only provinces left to unite Russia are owned by the Golden Horde. I'm currently paying tribute from a war I never lost and can't find a way to stop paying so they attack me. Any ideas?

Unfortunately you have to suck it up and declare a war without CB, at least in unmodded DW.

When the horde is the one paying the tribite, the peace lasts 5 years. non-hordes pay tribute until they declare war.

I think bankruptcy starts a war since you're unable to pay your monthly tribute. Not sure, I usually suck it up and take the stab hit, or wait until a +2 stability event before declaring war.

If youre Russia at +3 stab, from Austria over Berlin all the way to London and Paris someone is making an alliance against you.

High stability is for those softer western peoples. If your WE is ever under 5 and you're stab is at 3, you're not 'really' playing Russia. My AAR in my sig is how it should be done.
