Novgorod and Russia

I played now whit Novgorod, and have few questions.

Can I become Russia in a game whit Novgorod?
Is there something special I should do to become Russia?
Why at the start Muscovy and Suzdal imideatly DoW me?

yes novgorod can become russia i think they need to conquer some amount of territory and it happens in early 16th century. And moscow and sudzal declare war because they want your territory

besides you have a lot of nice territories with 0 fortifications.. sound appealing? yes.

Sure, you can become Russia as Novgorod. You need to own Moscow when the event rolls around in 1520. You also need one of Moscow's other provinces, which you should have anyway.

If only Muscowy and Suzdal declare war, you're doing great. Sweden usually jumps in too. They declare war because you're weak at the beginning. Low troops, poor quality, undefended provinces. General Winter is your friend. Buy off Sweden ASAP, Suzdal as well if they're involved (Archangelsk usually satisfies them), then beat Muscowy down until you get their other 2 provinces. It could take 10 years or so sometimes, no big deal.

So, you consider a 10 years campain a short one ?
I never play as Novgorod, but as Muscovy, I take them in no more than 1.5 years, and that because I wabt to spare my troups.

why would anyone want to play as novgorod anyway? Novgorod = practice area for Moscowy troops in training for Golden Horde military exercises.

In general its better to have to cultures rather then one. Well that's what I always say

I tried once but I quit after a short while. It was really tough with everyone making DoW against you. I believe Novgorod is a real challenge and you must play very careful to succeed in the start.

So why should you play Novgorod? The answer is obvious. You are such a good EU2-player that you have problems with finding a really challenging nation to play!

It is a mark of quality to play Novgorod!

Luck plays a large part in the succes in a Novgorod game.

And if you succed, then when you trun into russia you will get CB's on half the globe, and that is fun too

I play Novgorod instead of Muscowy for the three reasons above:

1) Start with CoT.
2) Second culture. Since I love to kick Sweden around, those provinces become easy converts/profitable.
3) Muscowy is too EASY.

The reason the war takes me 10 years and not 1.5 is because I don't have all the Muscowy morale (and I think early leader) advantages. I have to work at it. But it's not luck, as whoever said. I've never lost a Novgorod game, you can always trade away a junk colony for time, and space to recover. (I did get down to 3/4 occupied provs in the 10 year war game)
