Not understanding something about vassalage

In my ongoing efforts to understand the game, starting with Scotland, I loaded up the demo as Duke of Lothian. He's only Duke of Lothian and count of two provinces in the Duchy. Still, somehow he has vassals outside of the Duchy, such as Cumberland. How does that work?

You can have vassals that don't belong to the de jure area of your duchy. You can also have several ducal titles without being king and so on. There can also be counties that belong to the de jure area of your duchy, but are not your vassals. That you hold the ducal title only signifies that you hold more than 50% of the counties in that duchy (more or less. You don't automatically lose the title if you don't, but somebody can take it from you if they control more than you).

You can have vassals anywhere, as long as they are a lower rank than you. What ducky you are a duke of only determines what your de jure duchy is (you get a cb on your de jure duchy, and it determines where your capital is).

I guess I didn't play around enough as Duke of Turov. All I remember is when I tried to grant some counties that were covered by my duchies, they became independent.

That would happen if the person you granted it to was a duke. You can't have dukes as vassals unless you are a king or higher. Similarly, if you are a count, you can't have other counts as vassals.

Also, you can be duke of a duchy and not hold any of the de jure land holdings in that duchy (I was playing as habsburgs and the emperor made me duke of thuringia (sp) bc of my relations with him. I did not hold any of the 2 provinces within that duchy when he granted me the title)

I see, I went back and tried the Duke of Turov again and was able to give away most of the lands while keeping them under me.
