I don't think this behavior is specific to 1.3 or 1.4 but I am not sure. What I am seeing often though is a playbook out of the CIV games when their AI is a disfunctional mess. The Stellaris AI keeps sending little fleets one or so at a time against my big 5K fleet. Now mind you it only starts doing this after its main fleet gets wiped. But still, it should not set a course for and attack a 5K fleet when its a single corvette or destroyer. Not good at all. It's stupid AI decisions like this that drive me insane and ultimately lead to the end of a strategy game like this. Hopefully this can be improved in 1.5 somehow.

The issue as I understand it is that smart AI pathing has an overhead on computational resources. It's possible to do for a small number of fleets per nation, but the AI (re)forms it's fleets by building from multiple locations, and it is using simplistic pathing for the ships on their way to the fleet that has a brain assigned. Also it's much harder for the AI to coordinate multiple fleets on multiple objectives. It'd be nice for them to improve it, but very hard. You see the same issue on EU4.

My advice to you is just don't let it get to you, even exploit it if you like. Unless you're a much better player than me, you probably are, there may still be ways that the AI can use it's own calculation abilities to catch you out.

No, that is not the reason why they are entering the system with my 5K. You are saying basically they are "passing through". No, these little fleets set my 5K fleet as a target and go on a suicide run. Flat out. The system I took that led me to finally post on this behavior is a corner system in their empire anyway. They have nowhere to pass through to.

Yeah I've been seeing wars where the AI sends its construction ships & science vessels against my blockading fleets. Annoying, as every time they do that I have to tell the fleet to go back to bombarding.

In peace, which the majority of nations are, no-one cares if AI fleets take a 'dumb' route to their destination

In war then the AI needs to step up and be smart enough so that it does not suicide it's fleets.

Just last night the ai sent a single corvette and all of their troop transports deep into my space to assault a planet with a max level spaceport. I was just like "thanks for getting rid of all of your armies"
