Hi there,

After starting and restarting with France probably over 50 times, I finally had a successful start. I kicked England off the continent, got the PU over Milan, vassalised Brittany, Provence and Saluzzo and was feeling good. I was waiting for Burgundian Inheritance to fire so I'd be in a perfect position to kick on and start blobbing around Europe. My main aim is always to recapture the modern borders of France ASAP.

I was allied to Burgundy, with a royal marriage and 200 in relations. Austria, the Emperor, was rivalled to Burgundy and they had just been in a war.

To my shock and horror, Burgundy decided to give Austria all their land. Surely this is harsh/bugged/just stupid? I had been their loyal ally for 70 years, Austria had been at war with them and taken land off of them. And they gave them all their land? Surely this is wrong?

Regardless my save is now useless because I can't be bothered fighting the Emperor and dealing with the AE of capturing land in my culture group.

No thats the RNG of how the new event works

Well then it's stupid and, forget my save, Paradox should fix it.

It doesn't follow any logic or historical accuracy. If a war broke out over succession betwen France and Burgundy or France and Austria that would be different, but for Burgundy to just grant their arch rival all their land makes no sense.

Why would you even restart so many times as France and welcome to rng I guess.

Because I wanted a perfect start and tried multiple strategies to see which one worked best. I've been wondering if I could get the PU over Milan and Naples in the same save whilst vassalising Provence and kicking England off of the continent. It's not usually possible but I wanted to try.

And again, RNG in this game is stupid and ruins the game.

I agree it’s somewhat implausible. But 1. You can declare that war for the PU over Burgundy using restoration of union, so a war over succession could break out. And 2. I wouldn’t want players to be able to sway the full inheritance too much just through their being allies.

Looking at the event files in the wiki it seems like the conditions for Austria making concessions to France are pretty unlikely (zero chance if either is a rival of the other I think? I may be reading that wrong but I don’t think I’ve ever seen Burgundy split post-Emperor?). Perhaps it could be tweaked so Austria is more likely to give a strong France something.

Maybe if Burgundy and Austria had been at war previously Burgundy could enter the Austrian PU but with added liberty desire? Thus giving France at least the option of supporting independence and therefore fighting with Burgundy vs Austria?

I couldn't DoW Burgundy because I had a forced 5 year truce on them when they joined Austria. In that time, Austria split up Burgundy's northern possessions and made them all part of the HRE thus making it very hard to DoW on them due to the high AE that would come from annexing HRE states. On top of that, Austria had super alliances and they'd have been impossible to fight for the most skilled player.

It just doesn't make sense and nor is it very accurate historically. If I had the option to fight Austria for Burgundy it'd be different, but for them to just inherit everything on some rng is insane, especially with the truce and breaking up of Burgundy afterwards. I'm not suggesting I should have just won it automatically but competing with other states who had high relation with Burgundy, or having a war with Austria would have been fair.

No that's what keep it somewhat fresh, if you could completely guarantee any outcome the game would be boring as hell.

I don't want a guaranteed outcome in this event, just one that is logical/mirrors reality.

I'm with you on the perfect start. I don't know how many times over the years I've restarted because I failed at some specific thing I wanted to do.

But I still disagree about RNG ruining the game. It makes it much more interesting, and is a big part of EU4's replayability for me. If it didn't have some of the random aspects I probably would have got bored of it years ago.

Look, fair point, let me try to balance things. It's good the game has a life of its own, but I feel like sometimes the RNG can really screw or make your game. The way the dice rolls on key battles, the way certain alliances fall and things like this hugely change the game. That can be highly frustrating, or rewarding to deal with. I've not had much middle ground.

Ah. This is probably not ideal and could benefit from a closer look. The situation may be balanced around the more usual situation of France not being allied to Burgundy I guess?

Is there any way I can contact Paradox or have one of them look at this? I seriously feel it's an unfair situation that I did not even get the ability DoW on Burgundy/Austria. The Northern states were cut up (Picardy, Hainut, Bar etc) and so on so they were out of the question too. I may well have lost that war given Austria's allies but still, at least if I had the option I wouldn't have been so upset.

I still maintain, logic would say that I should have inherited something. I fought in Burgundian wars, gave them money, stayed allied and RM'd to them the whole time. For them to suddenly give everything to the country that tore them a new one 2 years prior seems very harsh.

For clarity. You originally said that Burgundy gave Austria all its land, but what you describe sounds more like Burgundy joined the Empire? I’m guessing Austria didn’t actually directly get anything out of the inheritance?

AI is 10 times more likely to choose this option by default, which is multiplied by 10 if Burgundy has a liberty desire of greater than 50%.

Every Province in the HRE owned by Burgundy will be released as Princes of the HRE.

I realise this doesn’t necessarily affect what you can do, but I think it is less illogical that Burgundy joins the HRE than Austria keeping the land for themselves (in which case I think France would get an option to declare war).

I just checked.

What happened was Austria got the PU on Burgundy, I have a truce with Burgundy and no CB.

The norther provinces got released as member states of the HRE. I have a conquest CB and no truce..

Burgundy remained under PU with Austria, with a liberty desire of 46% which dropped very quickly.

May be worth a bug report. I thought that the general idea is that if Austria decides to keep the PU then France gets an opportunity to contest that via event. I might be wrong though.

I only play Iron Man. I prefer it.

You clearly don't prefer it if you complain about RNG. With no RNG the game is a cakewalk(and it already is with RNG).

You got unlucky with an event. That event shouldn't change. You had a higher chance of getting the Burgundy PU as France due to your high relations/alliance/RM, because that's logical. They gave us that but still didn't want to make it a 100% chance decision, because honestly that's stupid. We shouldn't be able to control every little thing.
