Hi!! :)

Hi. :(

Here's how I play Victoria. I tell you this all because I am TERRIBLE, and I REALLY want to have more fun with this game. I will describe what I do and what happens, and you will please tell me what I can do differently to have more fun and play better.

I choose my country. YAY! Immediately after loading, the map and my interface appear, with a box giving me the option to begin the game. I never, ever, ever start the game. First, I go into budget. I tax everyone to 60%, put my tariffs slider all the way to the right (so much money!), I put education farther to the right, and keep everything else near the middle.

Then I spend about ten minutes in the trade screen, setting my country to sell almost everything I produce, except for small arms, artillery, machine parts, steel, iron, timber, lumber, cement, sulphur, ammunition, and canned food. everything essential to supplying an army, including wine and liqour, I set to buy if I fall under a certain amount (about 300), or set to sell for over a higher amount IF i am producing it in my own country (about 400-500). everything else, I keep maybe ten of, sell the rest.

then i go into diplomacy, and try to trade with people. no-one will trade me territories no matter what, so I end up just selling my techs to lesser countries for as much money as I can get until I run out of diplomacy points.

i set a science, usually for something industrial.

now the game begins, when I click start! my money jumps!, then falls, then stabilizes at barely making any profit, unless I actually run a small defecit, in which case I go decrease military spending and education. i usually end up making a profit of about 20 every day.

i wait and wait and wait, and when i have enough money and resources, i build railroads until i can build no more. then i go through industries in provinces, expanding until i can expand no more. then i wait and wait, and eventually i continue to not make any profit, so I come to the conclusion that i must need to conquer to make more money. i prepare my armies by marching them to a border of a country that seems weakened.

then i wait forever to acquire another diplomacy point.

in the meantime, i make soldiers of many farmers, since they seem to not do very much as grain is cheap to export. i use them to create armies, waiting for very long times to get enough money to make them. by the time i have made about 20,000 troops, i have another diplomacy, and i use it to declare war.

i advance! and attack, and destroy! I use leaders whenever possible, and i split up my forces to flank and encircle, then unite them all to push forward and repeat the process. and then from out of nowhere, 50,000 troops come and reclaim everything and force me to retreat. i try to sue for peace, they refuse. i end up giving them a lot just to get them to leave me alone. the only time i ever had a war that looked positive was when I was playing as the United States in the Grand Campaign. I allied with Texas against Mexico, and conquered everything Mexican which was West of Texas. then Texas declared peace with Mexico, and everything I had worked for and lost tens of thousands of men for was automatically given BACK to Mexico because the TEXANS got scared. later i attacked the texans' capital, then just quit the game before i could be more frustrated.

at that point i stop playing, and come here to look for tips, and find nothing as basic as what i need. everyone keeps saying to "read the manual", but unfortunately I bought my game in a regular CD case (no pictures), without a manual, used, from a local store -- probably sold by someone who was as frustrated as me but didn't know of the forum here. ;)

so, what can i do differently?

Talking about "pirate" software is against the rules of the board. You will get everyone in trouble if you bring these things up. Now I won't get any help, because you are ready to start talking of such things without any proof. I bought it in a regular store in the shopping center, the same thing happened (regular CD case, no manual, etc) when I bought Europa Universalis and an American game called "Toonstruck" (but it was in more than one CD case rubber band together). But that doesn't matter now because, because of you, I will get no help.

You < winner.

:(

also, i just remembered, i got one i think was called "operation flashpoint" from the same store. it had the regular CD case with a picture of a helmet on a rifle on the inside, but no manual anyway. but that was easier to do without because it is a shooting game.

Since the license agreement is IN the manual, and you DIDN'T get the manual, you have an illegal copy. Someone else has right to use your software. Probably the guy who made a copy of it and then sent it back there.

It's surprising, because EB, with their game exchange program, requires for the booklet now.

Of course, this is not my moderator point of view, that's my normal user point of view. Maybe if you post the scan of the actual CD, with "I love Paradox" written on a scotch tape on it, then we'll be able to talk (don't bother if it's writtent 3M, Maxell or Kodak on it though )

Cheers!

iamtalking - I am not debating whether or not you have a legal copy here. But try to see this from a moderator's point of view:
- you bought the game without box/manual
- that was a week after the Scandinavian release

How big is the chance that a regular customer returned the game after a week and has no longer manual/box? Rather slim, I say, hence some suspicion on my side. The suggestion Buster made is not far off, actually.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but from my point of view it looks strange.

ahum, I bougth battlefield 1942 second hand - it contained both the manual with the code and all original cd's,

the problem is that you buy "some" item from "some" shop and that you are "some" customer,

Pirate left and pirate right...
Ever heard of presumption of innocence?

Too hard to believe not 100% would keep the game for longer than a week? Or that some people don't save their boxes ?

for criminal offences you require proof beyond reasonable doubt.

For civil cases (which includes copyright violation) the standard is on balance of evidence.

Based on the testimony so far I know what verdict I would give....

Unlike everyone else I'm actually going to post some hints, because I had the same problems and no, the manual wasn't any help, it helped my understand how everything in the game worked, but it didn't do squat to help understand how it all worked together.

First I would suggest playing your first game as Prussia, you're a nation on the rise, you have some industrial capacity at the beginning and can take your time to understand the way the engine works, starting your first game as, say, Sardinia-Piedmont like I did, is a recipe for disaster.

So, like I said, start a game with Prussia, make sure that all your factories are filled up with workers, and that they are getting all the resources they need, if not import small quanities of them.

I strongly suggest that you sell some tech to your less advanced neighbours for some starting capital, and use it to build at least one more factory, in the long run it pays of, and you have plenty of spare labourers/clerks to employ.

I would suggest a factory producing artillery, it's expensive on the market and therefore good to produce as it gives a greater profit. And of course artillery is needed to make the Prussian army as great as it deserves.

Then just let the time pass, continue selling tech, upgrade railroads and build more factories and upgrade the ones you have, focusing on goods which are expensive or in low supply on the world market.

Keep the Russians and Austria friendly, fight the Danes over Holstein and when the time comes, unite Germany! :)

I hope that helps, I sure could have used some advice when I first started playing...
