Playing as Matilda, for yucks I offered Saru I of Cumana my hand in marriage - he accepted, which I thought was a pretty swell way to grab a huge tract of land for christendom

We've just had twins - a boy (Matisaru) and a girl (Sarutilda) :) but despite standing to inherit my array of titles as well as his father's kingdom he doesn't count as my Dynastic Heir - obviously this has soured his mother's happy day - what could I have done about this?

Matrilineal Marriage.

If you made a regular marriage...well, yeah, all heirs are of the husband's dynasty.

right, and he wouldn't have accepted that because he's a king and that would prevent him fathering an heir

fair enough

question: is it then impossible to entwine two dynsties into one heir through marriage? if not, how to achieve?

sorry for my ignorance about these things, I've never had to think about them before

Since I don't know the code to script a matrilineal marriage I just cheated and scripted a code for a female ruler (non ai) to just adopt one of her kids into the dynasty. dynasty = FROM

@rashtrakut
oh sorry, I meant to ask how the game would enable this

thanks for the idea though, I'm sure someone will use it for a mod somewhen

@Trystero
his father, and most of Cumana, is Pagan :p

and though I get the idea there's no heir for me to play as (unless I kill my husband (or he dies first somehow, but hat somehow should always be poison, for yucks) and remarry matrilinearly and have another child, which is unlikely to succeed

and again Ima have to reveal the paucity of my knowledge of the period by asking how one could gain an a dynastic heir that would allow continued play without a) marrying a lowborn man matrilinearly or b) marrying one of her cousins (though I am not certain that would work)

please bear with me on this, I'm trying all random jazz in the demo so I have some clue what I'm doing on the 14th

Second or third sons that have either no, or a very small possibility of inheritance will generally accept matrilinear marriage. Failing anything else, marry one of your courtiers.

Besides, I don't think Matilda has any cousins...

so then the only options are courtiers, and even if they're brother to Harold I there's still a huge prestige penalty to pay for it

or are there titles that would not be passed to the holder's children (again, I know nothing :s)

So I married one of Harold Godwin's brothers, became pregnant and changed the succession law for the Duchy of Toscana to elective in preparation, and because of greater control

it passed before any children were born and asked me to appoint a successor - I clicked on the portrait of Heinrich IV, looked at the choices of either the count of Parma or the count of Lucca (slightly confused I couldn' appoint my husband in lieau of my unborn child but I'm still geting used to this jazz) and decided against both because I'd only have to disappoint them in a few months when I took it away.

But when I closed the window (without selecting anyone) it had been given to the count of Lucca

I never asked for this - I've hurt my relation with Heinrich IV and Anselmo of Lucca for no reason :/

If for example a lord has only one ducal title, and two counties, even under gavelkind the third son would get nothing, since the first son would get the duchy and a county, and the second son would get the other county. As such, the third son might be willing to try a matrilinear marriage.
Under elective, it's possible none of the sons is being considered as an heir, and under seniority, the heir would be the oldest survivor of the dynasty, and thus the sons might be available.

Also, remember that anyone who does not have a landed title is treated as a courtier.

In the demo playing as Bohemia, i married my heir to a bavarian princess thorugh regular marriage, she somehow inherited bavaria. So the son of my heir is going to have both titles!

well the worst part is I did ask for it, but because I yawned over the succession tutorial I didn't know what elective meant

maybe if I could make the font clearer and three times the size I might want to read the tooltips? :p if only my vision was augmented

You don't have to marry a lowly courtier... instead, marry a bastard. Bastards can *only* marry matrilinearly, so as long as they aren't in close line of succession you can marry a bastard prince of a great house and get lots of prestige.
